Could be...
Personally, I dislike seatbelt laws and helmet laws. I don't think the governments should get involved with that issue, and have supported lobby groups working to abolish those laws in the US. But by the same token, I'd never ride a motorcycle or motorscooter without a helmet! And the first thing I do when I get in a car is put on my seatbelt. I believe those two can be lifesavers... MY lifesavers. I just don't think there should be laws about them. I don't wear them because there are laws about them. I wear them because I believe they improve the odds of my survival in an accident.
The problem is that people who don't wear seatbelts suffer more damage in accidents which ends up raising the insurance rates for everybody. It's good to keep in mind that driving a motor vehicle is a privilege, not a right. Which is why licenses are issued.
i agree 100% and it is exactly what i said in the last thread that debated people breaking traffic laws.

This is one of the last cities in thailand that teach and adhere to most strongly...Respect. watch the children?they are far from our screaming, rude, undisciplined kids. Did you know that there is no bullying in or out of school? There is no crime in CM. Petty stuff against foreigners. Pick pockets. Do you understand why they have this calm smiling attitude? RESPECT.i don't know where you are all from, but the Americans head the list of, loud and obnoxious, and then there are the Chinese. Especially last year.Your in their country. You are not here to dole out criticisms. Why did you come. To enjoy a great experience. To see their heritage. They are very modest and spoken people. YOUR IN THEIR COUNTRY. Respect them by honoring their ways. Don't embarrass the rest of us. We live here. They are raising there families like my parents and my grand parents before them. With respect.
"...Did you know that there is no bullying in or out of school? There is no crime in CM. Petty stuff against foreigners. Pick pockets...."
where did you get your information from? have you ever picked up a local newspaper or watched the local or national news??? what fantasy world are you living in? "There is no crime in CM." LOL

took a drive today in the area near and across the river from Dok Kaew Gardens (beautiful area) and it poured real good for about 2 hours including all the way through Wiang Kum Kan and Saraphi but when we got home it was still dry as a bone in Sansai. we haven't had a drop of rain in Sansai for more than a week now. having to water the garden twice a day. we need rain...

I disagree that Maya is aimed at Thais and Asian expats. Maya is aimed at shoppers, period. I also agree with the second poster. If Dukes opened in Maya I think you'd see plenty of Thais and Asian expats eating ribs and pizzas.

i'll rephrase that. MAYA is aimed at Thais, Asian tourists and Asian ex-pats. yes of course if Dukes was there Asians would be stuffing their faces. was there the other day again. there could not have been more than 15 falangs in the entire mall. lots of Japanese....more than any other mall. Central Festival gets a lot of Hong Kong Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Malaysians and Singaporeans and lots of Bangkok Thais.

it depends where you will be living. but you don't have many choices. TRUE as you said is everywhere. the only other choice is WETV which is quite good for Baht 350/month. It has BBC, AL Jazeera and Fox News for English language news and 2 movie channels. BUT it is not available everywhere in the outskirts of the city.

Its common practice all over Thailand. Would you rather pay the cop officially there and then and have done with it or would you rather the cop take your license so you have to go to the main police station at a later date and then try to pay the fine and get back your license ?
I used to like to go and sit with a beer opposite where they had the helmet checks. Farang or Thai the fine was the same and at 500 baht that is a lot of money for a Thai yet I never once heard a Thai shouting off yet saw many a farang giving it the big "I rich farang you Thai " crap trying to get out of paying
As far as I know ignorance of the law is no defence anywhere in the world.
I would far rather deal with the traffic police here in Thailand than back home in the UK where the slightest infringement means there is zero wriggle room and you get a large fine and points on your license which makes your insurance even more expensive than it is already.
Give me Somchai any day.
it may be common practice in your circles but not in mine. i've spoken with Thai friends about this in the past and none of them have ever handed a policeman cash. i just asked the wife if she was ever asked to pay a bribe in the 20+ years she has been driving and her answer was "no never" and she said none of her relatives have been asked to pay a bribe either. they would never contribute to the corruption, and none of you should either. pay at the police station and get a receipt. they will negotiate also. many 400 Baht tickets can be reduced to 200. better yet, just don't break the law. simple.
BTW, handing a policeman cash on the road is not "officially" as you say. it's a bribe. the whole idea behind the current cleansing of government is to put an end to this crap once and for all.

I think this accident happened very recently but before yesterday on Huay Kaew near the Maya Intersection.
I can't figure out what happened. They didn't even clean up the unfortunate persons brains off the road.
Be careful out there.
that's very unusual. i've seen countless fatal accidents here over the years and they are usually very careful about cleaning up all the remains of the victims - similar to the Israelis after bomb incidents. the guys and ladies who do this job are a volunteer force who do it to earn Buddhist merit.

it does seem silly but as others said there appears to be something on the books about it...
i always find it odd when people post that a policeman demanded money from them. i've driven here many years and never has a policeman asked for a bribe. i did get a ticket twice that i can think of (once for an illegal u-turn and once for something else) but both times i was given a ticket. i paid at the police station. i think one was 200 and another 400. why would anyone give cash to a policeman and contribute to the corruption?
Ummm... because if you don't they will force you to spend the rest of the day at the police station?
rubbish. takes 5 minutes.

With all the Western Expats living within 2 km of The Maya,....go figure!
considering the Maya is aimed at Thais and Asian ex-pats i believe they have it figured out just fine.

A recent post on our Chiang Mai Highlanders Facebook page has included the following link. In the Facebook post it was stated that a generous donation has been made by the Chiang mai governor in the amount of $10,000. http://www.gofundme.com/66ajwg
i'm guessing that's THB 10,000 and not AUD, SGD ($) 10,000, etc.

had really good results with the frame shop almost across from Suan Bak Had. 24 hour turn-around. but terrible trying to find parking!
The one just on the other side of the moat, across from the park, next to the car repair/sales building? It's right where the u-turn intersects with the oncoming traffic. Right?
right. not sure about car sales building. i know they sell auto alarms.

what a pathetic little man you are. it should be illegal for people to spy on others using your spying methods. what kind of insecure person would spy on a drug addicted, filthy prostitute?

As others have said, a good thing as it shows the veggies aren't full of chemicals.
If you could let us know in a round about way the name of the restaurant, I'd like to add it to my list of regulars.
near the upstairs food court at Central Festival. original store on Nimman.

he's right. it's a positive sign on the one hand that the veggies were free of pesticides, but still laziness on the part of the staff for not doing a proper job of washing and inspecting them.
was the salad restaurant in Central Festival by any chance?
that would really put me off too.
you're getting warm........
And referring to comments about pesticides, I went to get Baking Soda to make drain cleaner to clear a slow drain last week (it worked) and the (thai) pharmacist said she used a weak solution ( 1 teaspoon to 2 litres) to soak fruit/veg for 15 mins to get rid of pesticides etc.
I cant vouch for the efficacy but she seems like a lady who knows her stuff.
we've been doing this for years now to get rid of pesticides. it works. i would say that we use a little more than a teaspoon but not that much. we often see the signs around town now at restaurants who practice this.

we went in the last couple of weeks for lunch. didn't think it was anything too special and the wife didn't care for it. small portions, one rice dish had all of one shrimp in it for about 90 Baht. service was slow. we were the only customers at the time and waited close to 25 minutes for the food. presentation was nice, staff were friendly. i may give it another go and try something different but not in a hurry to go soon.

Chiang Mai Ram also has (or had) a helipad. Probably not operational now, but it was definitely there 20 years ago.
Suan Dok (or the CMU Neurological Hospital - i forget which one) has a helipad too.

matrix ita?
edit: probably not. i've been on the site all day and don't see anything different.

forget the post. there is a major crackdown going on now. they are opening almost all of the parcels coming in and charging import taxes. the wife already got a notice about some items she ordered from China. they said the delay from customs in BKK to C.M. could be months and there will be taxes due!
