  1. If you really want to save money go to the "X-Ray Clinic" just before Central Festival on the road that runs alongside the Super Highway. it's about 1/2 way between RAM2 hospital and Central Festival. large sign, recently put up in English "X-Ray". very short wait, results immediately. the older lady doctor is very nice and speaks excellent English. had my knee x-rayed there recently - 300 Bath. they also do CT scan, ultrasound, etc.

  2. you would be making a large mistake. at your age, you are being taken for a ride. dowry? i guess you mean sinsod. i don't know anyone, Thai or farang, who has ever paid such a thing. find a lady closer to your own age who likes you for who you are, and not what you can do for her and her family.

how does this relate C.M. anyway?

why do you "pay towards her family already"???

  3. Ate there recently and thought the pizza (pizza margherita) was some of the best I've had in a long time. In particular the cheese, but also the crust, was great. Sadly there was little choice for meat toppings except pork based things. Didn't see any farangs in the kitchen, so perhaps it means cooking time, at least for pizza, has now been sorted out.

Also had a decent salad with passion fruit dressing (stealing that great idea for my own private use), though slightly expensive (95B?) relative to the contents I felt. Less lettuce and more other vegetables, and it would have been better. Obviously opinions varies, as I see somebody else commented this salad was very generous (for two even?). Or maybe my salad was different. :-(

there is no farang involvement whatsoever.

Caesar salad is a very generous serving. haven't tried the others.

Ah, my bad. I blindly assumed the cook referred to for overseeing the cooking time was a farang.

Mrs. Awk had the Caesar salad. Her comments were that it tasted good, but only had lettuce. (Slight exaggeration on her part, as it obviously had some other things too, but like my salad, not much else.)

it's a traditional Caesar salad with Romaine, fresh grated Parmesan, croutons, bacon and the classic Caesar dressing. so yes, not much else.

  4. the above post reflects my feelings as well. never been to the Night Bazaar location however and i don't fancy River Market. nothing wrong with it but i don't like 'fusion' food.

The night Bazaar location only has small Pizza as they have a small oven.

They do have a menu that is similar to the one Dukes had on the river before he opened the Promenada.

Needless to say because of the difference in rent the prices are higher in the Night Bazaar. But as always the health standards are top notch.

Can not reveal my source but I do know for a fact that Dave does not buy the cheapest food. He is a stickler for quality. He says your taste might not notice it but your body will.wai.gif

thanks for that "insider tip". if i wanted to know such details i'd pick up the phone and call David and ask him. i doubt if he even knows you by name.

  6. 'Steak of the Day' is pretty good. It is located in a block of shop-houses behind the centre of Mae Rim. You turn left at the lights if you are heading away from town, and drive a block, and then turn right into the shopping area. If you heading towards town, then you turn right at the lights, and right again. They do lunches as well as dinner, I believe.

    +1

great restaurant. nice people, good food.

  7. One of the Two MP's on each main gate entrance is carrying a Uzi sub machine gun. No magazine loaded.

    john

no magazine? are you sure? that can't be possible can it? -- even in Thailand???

  8. the Army command post is set up almost directly across from Warm Up. at 11:45 it's getting close to curfew. people in already? people without ID maybe? underage drinkers? could be anything. BTW it's quite serious at the moment to not be in possession of your ID. don't leave home without it!

  9. Promenada is always really quiet. Anyone know how much the rent is there? .

Everyone is getting large discounts at prom. Most around 50% off. Which depending on where the shop is can be as cheap as 500baht a square metre a month.

Some I think are not paying any rent, but instead have a commission deal.

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

that sounds reasonable. hope it survives as it is a nice place with nice atmosphere (although there are no shops there that interest me except Rimping and the Dukes).

  10. To me, the 8th wonders of this world is how come all those tall building in Thailand

don't implode on collapse on to them selves on a daily bases knowing how shoddy

local workmanship is and can be...

for good reason, the tall building tenders are usually won by Western contractors.

A clue usually is a site perimeter fencing with the hard hat/hi viz signs posted everywhere..............and steel scaffolding not bambooooooooo!

right. or Western/Thai co-ventures such as ITALTHAI construction group. i was in Bangkok the other day and these cranes are everywhere displaying the logo. they are also building the new under? over? pass in Mae Rim.

  11. 80,000 used would be a good start :-)

for 80K Bath you would get an absolute piece of garbage that would fall apart in a month or two. it probably would need a complete engine and transmission rebuild.

  12. i agree with the post above. you need to up your budget to at least 325,000 for something newer. a friend just bought a 13 year old Japanese car (in excellent condition but it needed tires and shocks) and he paid 215,000 Bath and he shopped around for quite a few weeks.

  13. actually i know many Thais not only in Thailand but in USA and Europe. i've lived here many years and before moving here, traveled back and forth since 1980, so have built up many professional and personal relationships over the last 34 years. in my business, Thais are some of the best customers and the biggest spenders.

I would suggest these are not typical Thais and not earning a typical Thai wage.

I only know one Thai that has been outside the country (if you exclude hookers).

He is now a chef working at a major 5* hotel, currently earning 12,500bht a month.

it all depends on who you know i guess. all of my Thai friends have traveled to Europe, USA and Australia, Korea, China, etc. either on vacation or on business-related seminars or industry functions. a number of them lived in either Los Angeles or Denver, or European cities, owned businesses there, etc. everyone in my wife's family has been to China, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, the States, etc.

so it all boils down to who you know. everyone is different.

  14. I'm waiting for the posters in that other thread a few days ago who claimed that most Thais earn 40.000 a month these days.

Note that in this OP they have adjusted the 25.200 Baht per Thai person to per household. Huge difference

most, if not all the Thais I know earn between 40-75K per month on average. and many of them are not living beyond their means. 2 kids at a reasonably good school alone costs 120,000 Baht per term or 240,000 per year, car payments, health insurance, etc. the cost of living here has gone to the moon.

It sounds as you know very few Thais.
