The 2 years is in regard to claiming the OZ pension and getting portability, that is being able to get the pension whilst overseas. If one is outside of Oz for 2 years or more you are no longer considered to be residing in Oz(different from citizenship)  you have to reside in Oz for 2 years before being eligible for portability.

I was actually going to mention this. I get conflicting stories. I have been told I need to be back in Oz 2 years to collect pension when eligible. The other story is I can get immediately on return if entitled but have to live there 2 years to be eligible for portability. Two different scenarios so which is correct?

I have an Australian passport and I know that after 2 years out of the country and I cease to be a resident of my own country,so my guess would be 2 years.

Not doubting but where did you get that figure from?

I emailed my accountant about a year ago (after 5 years here) and asking him questions in that regard. Originally I planned to stay here until death do us part (and could still be the case), but with an unplanned sick baby and immigration rules changing I now plan to head back and try for the pension (eligible? in 2 1/2 years). He told me that I was still regarded as an Australian Citizen.

Having said that after 5 years I was kicked out of Medicare and have to "rejoin" when I get back.

One or two of our members are married to people from the hilltribes so guess they will consider it quite insulting for you to say  "no natinality I think like the hilltribe people", or did you say that as a joke ?

My son was born in Thailand nearly 3 years ago. I am Aussie and his mum from Myanmar and on his birth certificate it listed him as no nationality with a side note stating he was someone temporarily or illegally in Thailand.

I'm prepared to go the agent route and pay to expedite an extension of stay as the much cheaper alternative, but how do I go about finding one?

Read my post above to see I had same issue as you. I phoned my agent and she actually said if they get denied I could try myself and they would prepare paperwork for me (at a fee of course). Thought I would have a better chance using the agent. But then again this is only one persons answer.

Yes what Ubonjoe said. Kasikorn, and I presume every other bank, can provide a statement tracing back the foreign origin of your funds. I believe Immigration accepts these statements from your Thai bank. It may cost 200 baht and you may have to wait two weeks. It is something I would talk to your bank about and then get such a statement in hand to test this before you absolutely need it. If you are going to go with the monthly income plan then you have to be vigilant monthly and have a tested plan to resolve deposit issues if your deposit shows up as a domestic transfer.

I have been using TransferWise and ok for the first 7 months. This month came through as SMT transfer. So I reverted to my old method from Commonwealth Bank in Australia. I always have sent in Australian dollars but for some reason this time I sent in THB and transfer came through as BTN. So I did 3rd transfer to send in Oz $s and came through as FTT. Then I signed up with DeeMoney and first 2 transfers sent back for next time. I contacted TransferWise and they said they have taken my recipient (me) for my payment to come to my Bangkok Bank account directly although they did say will not always work. If I have more issues I will just stick with Commonwealth Bank even though it costs a little more and not as good a rate as TransferWise.

  6. I used to live in Brisbane Australia which has one main runway so can take off/land either way due to prevailing winds. To "share" the noise around they would take various flight paths at various times. There is even a website that has the outputs of noise meters placed around Brisbane in the various flight paths. Obviously can't do too much about immediate take off/landing zones but just before landing and soon after takeoff flight path can be, and is often altered.

Could be doing that here but I doubt it.

Surely first you need to first to set a limit with BBL.

This to some extent protects you from massive continuous unauthorized withdrawals by scammers etc.

Is it not also true that the bank you choose to approach in Australia and use their ATM machine would also have policies to limit withdrawals and protect against problems and issues and investigations etc., when foreign cards are used in their machines?

Yes I now believe that I will have to organise a limit with BBL.

And yes Australian banks would set limits and hence my question on here. Maybe some one has done it previously and have an idea on limits.

When the news broke about the 'possible' insurance requirement for ex-pats, this idea was suggested by a poster on Thai Visa.

Is someone from the Ministry of Tourism & Sports reading Thai Visa in order to pick up a few tips. ????

Well according to a member who commented on a post of mine in another thread it is posts like mine that causes immigration to change the rules so I guess your statement is correct (according to him).
