If your comparison should make any sense you should compare your consumption (kwh) and even then....Australia is large...where in Australia? How is the temperature? (aircon) How many people are living here and there?

You can only compare the cost per kwh but not the final amount of your bill.

That is the only way to compare is cost and kilowatt consumption. Means nothing otherwise.

My water bill in Chiang Mai is usually around 100 baht for the month. My inlaws in Australia was $aud448 for 3 months but can't compare as I don't know how much water they used.

They seemed quite professional in their approach, so can only take them at their word.

They were the only shop of about 10 that I went into that actually sold ingots.

But sure, when I take it in to sell, let's see...

    Cheers mate.

Not doubting what you say about that shop, just from experience I have been charged and have seen charges are higher than 50b/b. As I previously mention any time I bought a bar over 5baht I am not charged a commission. I have only sold one bar once and I explained that above. I did buy 22 baht one time at a shop. It was 2 x 10b and 2 x 1b bars and I was charged 400baht above published gold price at the time. I asked why and they said 200baht commission for each of the 1b bars.

I don't know where the shops you looked are but my experience mainly comes from the gold shops at Wararot Markets in Chiang Mai. Many many gold shops.

    I bought a 5 baht bar recently and paid 50 baht/baht.

The selling price would be the normal selling price minus 50 baht/baht.

I think you will find most gold shop charge more than that on selling and it varies considerably. As mentioned above I have only sold one 5 baht bar since started buying. I had a thai friend with me and first shop wanted 1000baht commission (200baht/baht). Finally sold at a shop for 300 baht (60b/b).

I would never buy gold bars in Thailand. Buy them from a reliable bank in Europe or better, in a bank in Switzerland.

I buy gold bars in Thailand because easy to sell back in Thailand. I once bought 4 x 100 ounce silver bars from Singapore (internet order delivered to Thailand) and almost impossible to sell here in Chiang Mai. Ended up personally taking them back to Singapore.

  5. Recently had to take a friend to Wiang Haeng for a few days to do something. We had a bit of a look around the area and the task was taking longer than expected so I looked at Google Maps and saw Pai only around 60km away. So I suggested we go there for a drive, stay the night and go back to WH next day. BIG MISTAKE. So we headed off in the morning. The road was narrow and winding but no hurry so drove slow. The sealed road turned to gravel and mud in places. At one point we came across a work crew installing power poles along the side of the road. As I mentioned this road was narrow. So the truck with outriggers out while installing the pole literally took up the whole width of the road so we had to wait till they finished the job so they could move to a point to pass them. We continued on and about 20km or 1 hour into the trip we came across a muddy patch with wheel furrows so deep obviously made by a truck. Now I think a 4WD would have a problem getting past but I was in a Honda Jazz. So we turned back and headed back out. Before we had hit the mud patch I had decided the return trip was going to be the looooong way back.

I obviously should have done a bit of research on the road other than just looking at Google Maps but as it was only 60km I didn't bother.

So if you are thinking of doing this trip make sure you have the appropriate vehicle and don't go in the wet as some of it is very steep and would be a problem when wet. Better still don't go that way.

  6. Changed 10 x Australian $100 notes the other week at an exchange booth in Chiang Mai. Was handed one back and told no good because it has a little writing on it. Took it home and with a little help from some isopropyl alcohol and a cotton ball the writing came off. Yesterday I changed some more at a different exchange shop. Checked every note before I left and no writing. As she was checking them she showed one to her co-worker and spoke in Thai. I asked anything wrong. She showed me a small black smudge and said dirty. I said seriously how can you have perfectly clean money in circulation and that many Thai notes I get from shops, banks and ATMs have writing on them. She just exchanged it and said no more. I went straight to a bank and deposited via cash deposit machine. As I did I had a quick look at a few of the notes and at least 5 had writing on them.

I guess a bit of money laundering is needed before my next exchange.

Those of us clever people studied  the market and found that over the last 10 years silver has proven to be a better investment than gold, therefore, I buy gold. And with much more uses than gold, it's a no brainer.

Oh you are such a cleverman. Modest too.

Except "silver has proven to be a better investment than gold, therefore, I buy gold."

Funny you mention that I bought 400,000 baht worth there about and wanted to keep them as an investment.

The place we could go to borrow on gold wouldn't except them as they were sealed in plastic and couldn't test them.

Luckily didn't lose but the shop we bought them from was the only gold shop that would buy them back.

I have bought 55baht weight worth. 35 from 1 shops and 20 from others. Hope I don't have trouble when needing to sell. Knowing my luck I will.

What you need to do is go to any shop and get a value

then go and calculate the value yourself or with someone who knows about gold

then if your happy with the price the shop offered you then go back and sell of not then go to another shop

All shops work on the quoted spread prices of Thai gold both bars and jewellery at any given time then usually add a commission. Its the commission that can vary for a given gold price.

The price of gold is up slightly from a month ago.

Fixed prices are shown in the shop, your jewelry if it still looks good maybe cleaned and resol as jewelry or just melted down.

The difference between buy and sell is only 100baht as mentioned before.

You can go by yourself ,no problem. If you do not get the normal price go to another gold shop.

100 baht difference only applies to bullion (bars), jewellery is nearly 1000 difference. See pic. First price is for bullion or bars and second is for jewellery.

  12. The latest price for gold ornaments (jewellery) is 18707/baht weight so 5 baht will get 93535 less commission charged by the shops which sometimes can be negotiated. So Cereal would be close to the mark on a 10% loss.

With the stock markets crashing I would wait a bit longer as gold is heading up.
