I once fell out of a plane at 8000 feet. Luckily I had a my backpack on which contained a large sheet attached by ropes to the backpack. As I am writing this I survived.

Hi everyone.

I am planning a road trip late this month from Chiang Mai to Phuket. Does anyone have ideas/recommendations of interesting places to see on the way down and back? Plan to do the trip 4 or 5 days each way. Not interested in wats/temples as there are plenty her in CM.

Really? Recently took Grab to airport from home about 120 Baht. When I came back i was looking at phone to book Grab when lady taxi driver came past with a customer and asked where I was going. Told her. She wanted 400 baht. I said too much. SO she said 300.  As I had just gotten off an all night flight and was hot so I took it. Her other customer had further to go and I heard her tell him 200.

I am happy to pay reasonable but to be asked for 400 when Grab charged 120.......not reasonable.

Was in my yard today and saw postie pull up at house opposite. I assume residents out as car gone and gate locked. Next thing parcel went flying about 5 to 6 metres through the air from the footpath  and landed at front door. 

Guess the last part of journey was by air.

Nothing. Poor insulation will make them both work harder.

My first split AC in Australia was a Fujitsu General. The installer said it was a new brand and did not know what it was like. Well I changed it out for an inverter model after 19 years of use and I put it in my workshop and was still going a several years later when I moved to Thailand. So you just really don't know.

Inverter units are more expensive than standard units because of the heaps of electronics in them. This also means that if they fail they can be very expensive to repair. In Australia it was often just as cheap to replace the whole unit. I could imagine the same here. Inverter units, again because of the electronics are more prone to damage by power surges and vermin such as geckos, mice etc. In a non inverter unit the compressor cuts in and out to control the temperature whereas an inverter unit the compressor is running a lot more at varying speeds to control temperature within a narrow range. Again, due to electronics they are susceptible to heat and if the out door unit is mounted in direct sun they are "smart enough" to derate themselves when the electronics get too hot and thus don't deliver the rated output. If you buy a unit that is just big enough for the room then it runs at full power most of the time and any savings are lost. Having said all that I did have one in my bedroom in Australia as I worked shift work and it was much better at controlling a constant temp and usually quieter,

I had to travel to Bangkok from Chiang Mai return to have a DNA test for my sons Citizenship (Australian). We turned up at the Air Asia checkin and I handed my passport, baby's original birth certificate and mum's ID and letter from her consulate as she is from Myanmar and only has Pink Non Thai ID and restricted to Chiang Mai. They processed mine and gave me boarding pass, processed my sons with birth certificate only and gave boarding pass then refused hid mum as letter did not mention Bangkok. Lost money of flights, airport transfers and hotel, but that is another story.

So in short he was ok with birth certificate only with Air Asia.

OP, is your DEC accurate or just to satisfy thai imm. Only asking as I suspect the majority of statements made are not. I'm au also. 

I doubt if he would tell you that its not accurate, especially on a public forum, as that would then be a criminal offence in Australia.

58 years in Australia and rarely had mail go missing. Had a lot go missing here in Thailand and as recent as this month.

Sent to calendars from Australia to a friend in Canada one year. Some postal worker obviously liked one and took it but did send the other on. Both were in same package.

Medical care is free in OZ to a certain point 

 

,seeing a GP most are free, ,emergency services hospital treatment is free, publc hospital care is free 

 

ambulance is free to pensioners unemployed, 

pensioners receive all day transport passes, etc ,

 

The thing which hurts most old  Aussie expats in Thailand is that health insurance they have to take out when in Australia they would get medical care free 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Admittedly when I was back there I did not buy groceries so can't comment on the prices.

Yes you are right about the medical but, on the other hand, I can get into a specialist here (in Chiang Mai) without having to goto a GP and getting a referral and most times only cost 500B. I find medicines to be very expensive here.

Now I have been here over 5 years I have been "kicked out" or Medicare and have to re-apply when I go back and have to prove I have left Thailand and back in Australia permanently.

I am not a pensioner yet so those benefits are not available to me. I still have 3 1/2 years to go to be eligible and will be returning to Australia before that time.

So at the present time a lot things that I need are cheaper here. House rent, water, electricity, car rego, eating out.
