  1. This could actually be quite hilarious to watch.

You notice when something indefensible or genuinely embarrasing, it is only handled by the underling ministers, such as culture. Note the deathly silence about the Karen girl from anyone in government. So, in reality, what is Yingluck going to do when asked about this by a reporter? There is absolutely only one logical side to stand on, in this arguement. What line will Yingluck take to try to stand on both sides of the fence?

"You know, elephants, we trade ivory, falang no understand". I await her sheepish response to why this shouldn't be outlawed.

Girl who tries to stand on both sides of fence can not avoid a pain in the ass!
  2. I have commented befor about the iresponsibility if Thai with the proper disposal of plastics, ie, not throwing all garbage on the ground and not burning plastics....and arrogent Thais told me it was a problem caused by farangs who have made plastic products available to Thai people...go figure!

    Well it's true, isn't it???

Were plastic bags invented by Thai's?

Point of origin has nothing to do with responsible use, love of the earth or reasonable consern about the future..what has been invented by Thais? pollution has knows no borders..we all suck the same air and water.....no consern for others or the future is the real problem here.

  3. 1000 THB fine??? don't need to sell many drinks to recoup 1000 THB! kinda like paying the police 200THB for driving without a licence and getting a free pass to continue driving for the rest of the day......I LOVE THIS COUNTRY!

I was in Khorat for the last election day...it was sad to see all the farangs with drinking problems in a panic trying to find a place that would sell them a beer....should those who can't vote be exempt??

  4. In my village ( Ban Mai Rimool ) we have 4:30 am roosters and 5:30am roosters..but I may wake up earlier than that to the sound of my mother inlaw and sisters inlaws washing pots and pans in the dark....wonder how they know they are clean???lol

My wife washes clothes in a tub, by hand each day, cleans the floors and cleans up the muddy mess left by all the village dogs on our large covered tile porch daily. Other than that, cooking, careing for our 4 year old daughter. Sometimes helps with the farm work..rice & tapoica...in the heat of the day...naps are pretty common...reminds me of the siestas in Mexico....lol

  5. I have to thank the state of Kalifornia for banning smoking in the bars. I was living as frugally as possible to save money for my retirement in Thailand. I quit going to the bars altogether so was also able to save that money.

If someone owns a bar, I think it should be up to the owner whether to permit smoking or not. There could be smoking bars and non smoking bars. That's the way a democracy should work. One of the reasons I live in Thailand is that I have no desire to live in a nanny state. I do refrain from smoking in restaurants because I do respect people who don't like the smell of tobacco smoke. Cigarettes and beer go together and if you don't like me smoking, go somewhere else that is a no smoking bar.

Years ago they banned smoking in bars in california to protect the health of the employees forced to breath the second hand smoke. Many bar owners got around this law by making all employees co owners of the bar. They were required to buy one dollars worth of the company. If all were owners and none were employees..smoking is permitted.
  6. I think the really obsessive ones don't usually live in Thailand. They're back at home, bitter and angry about being ripped off by some bargirl, and have developed a complex about Thailand and vent their frustration on the internet. Some that do live here seem to be stuck in some backwater equivelent of a redneck trailer park and are very angry about it, and unable to do much about it

Redneck Trailer Park???? That was one of my reasons for leaving the USA...blood thirsty rednecks and greedy republicans..the further away, the better!
  7. I am from the U.S.A

My only response is that I miss good beef from the USA. Every steak I have found in Thailand is from NZ, cut thin, and not tender at all. I suspect they do not grain feed their beef before slaughter to improve flavor and texture.

I worked on cattle ranches in the USA and whenever a cow died by accident and was not grain fed before "harvest" it had the same flavor and texture as NZ beef.

After a month in Thailand, I'd give my arm for a good 1 1/2" thick T-Bone, medium rare with grilled onions, like I was raised on in the states.

  9. Try checking [email protected] they have been very helpful to me.

the "la" in this addredd is cuz I'm in California USA, and deal with the consulate in Los Angeles, Ca. There should be a like address for your closest consulate as well.

I've got a lot of good advise in these threads too, but learned in these threads that the rules are constantly changing...the thaiconsulate can let you know the most current situation.

  10. I'm getting ready to apply for my initial Non O visa. I can't answer your question, but I am following the answers you get here.

I have a question for you. The account with at least 400K, can it/ does it need to be in a bank in Thailand or can it / does it need to be in an account in your home country?

I will be returning to Thailand in a couple of weeks and would love to avoid the extra charges U.S. banks are charging for all forigne transactions now.

  11. I do not know the answer to your car question. It sounds like we are in simular situations and I wonder if you have any advice for me.

I have been married to a Thai woman for about 9 years, she has been in USA with me for about 6 years now..and we have a 3 year old daughter.

Recently, my wife has become ill and I have taken her and my daughter to stay with her family in our village near Khon Buri. We have property there and had a small house built there last spring.

I plan to rejoin my wife and daughter in Thailand in a few weeks.

I have looked into obtaining a non O visa, but found that I need to move at least 400000bht into an account that is only in my name, then wait two monts to apply for the non O visa.

Is there any other visa I can obtain before that to avoid the monthly runs to the border?

Can I apply for visas from Thailand or am I required to aaply from an embassy in the US?

I would be thankful for any advice you could give me.

    Thanks,

    William

  12. I am new here.

I have a Thai wife and a 3 year old daughter. Due my wife's recent illness, I have taken her and my daughter back to Thailand to be close to her family and the Thai medical system. I plan to join them within a few weeks.

I know that for me to obtain a Non ) visa, I am required to have 400000bht in a bank account under only my name. I need to open an account under my name and wait 2 month before applying for the non) visa.

    Questions:

Can this account be opened in Thailand or does it need to be in U.S.A.?

Can I apply for a visa after returning to Thailand, or must I apply here in the states?

Is there any other visa I can get to hold me until I can apply for the non O visa?

Also, I am not clear on how to post things like this in the regular forum. Can you give me instructions on how to do so or tell me where I can find out how?

    Thank you,

    William Minehan
