  1. I usually have no problem with rimping products but it happened already a few times that I bought some biscuits on promotion 2 x 1 that were old and not crunchy anymore. I am not sure this happened only to me but if it is a systematic way of selling old products, it is definitely not appreciated. Did somebody have the same experience?

  2. Anyone who has travelled the small rural unpaved mountain back roads of the north knows that it is not palm oil but corn that is replacing large tracts of forest. The encouragement and of course the funding for all this comes from Big-Agra concerns in Bangkok such as the rather notorious CP Group. That is not to deny the role of traditional swidden agricultural practices amongst the highland peoples which certainly includes burning to both clear the land as well as to create a layer of fertilizer, but the scope of the relatively new commercial farming of corn has taken the slash and burn to an entirely new level of intensity. The mushrooms are merely an afterthought, neither the cause nor motivation for the burning.

Clearing for agriculture is definitely a problem but its the forest that is burning the most. I just travelled to khon kaen and for about 400 km from Chiang mai you can see a lot of burnt forest. Collection of non timber forest products is a big contribution to household economies. So mushrooms, bamboo, and pakwan

    are definitely reasons for burning.

  3. The farmers do not burn because its a tradition but because they make money by doing it.

    1. Collect pakwan. Green tree leaves of a specific species

    2. Bamboo shoots

    3. Hed top. Collect this type of mushrooms

    4. Clear the land

    5. Hunting

if they do not have monetary incentives to stop, they won't.

You mean to say that they burn because of 'greed, ignorance and short term gains'?? The burning idiots must not look up at the sky, as they are looking down all the time for mushrooms and other things.

We'll never see the end of the burning as it'a not only LOS burning [look at the burn map in the pinned topics on the CM forum], but all her neighbors and they are even more uneducated and short sited and more poor. The smoke cloud from forests burning extends all over SE Asia and at some point mixes with China's industrial pollution, then we really get a nasty brew.

I feel same as you but these people need to make a living and collecting ntfp's is what they have been doing for a very long time, and that involves burning. These are families that lives on a 500 baht a month when there is no rice to sell. It is easy to blame them because we do not have the same problems and because we are educated to understand preservation of nature. I work with many hill tribes and they do not understand the extent of problems they cause. They think they need to make a living.

it is not easy to resolve this problem.

  4. Winnie is right! Mainly the undergrowth is burnt together with all the new seedlings and that's why the forest has no way to regenerate itself but degrade further.

Not sure where you come from but controlled burn is used everywhere people have any sense. It allows the established trees to grow unhindered and it it a very good way to keep a real forest fire from being uncontrolled.

where I come from we do not burn and if we catch somebody lighting fire, he is going to have some jail time. I work in forestry in south east Asia for quite a while and I can tell you that in most cases fire is not under control and it is very detrimental for forests around here. In some pine forests of north America fire is needed for regeneration of some tree species but it is not the same here. Fire is damaging forests ultimately.

  5. Today I have been for the first time to this new sporting facility for climbing, located not far from Tesco Kamtian on atsadathon road going from the moat toward tesco.

The building is orange color on the right side of the road and easy to spot.

The price for one person per day is 200 THB and 70 THB for kids, and they have all the necessary equipment.

I thought somebody might be interested!!

  6. it is the best pizza in Chiang Mai for sure

It is a very subjective matter, for some might be the best and for others might just be average or not good at all.

For me (as Italian) I feel that the pizza at success is decent but nothing special and I haven't found yet the pizza that I really like.

But for being Thailand I can't complain since many places make pizza better than some of the restaurants in Italy!!

  7. You seem to be making a distinction between a mild case of dengue and a case of dengue symptoms with mild symptoms. What's the difference? If two different people both test positive for dengue but yet the severity of symptoms is vastly different, is not one of those dengue cases more severe than the other?

The difference is, as I believe you yourself pointed out, the words "test positive for Dengue." How many, who have stated that they had a 'mild case' actually were tested with laboratory blood work-ups? There are several diseases that present similar symptoms, and only a blood test can determine which disease is the causative factor.

I tested positive for dengue and had very mild symptoms. Fever no more than 38.5C, mild head ache, and back pain. After 6 days from infection I recovered almost completely. Compared to many other people's symptoms, this is called very mild.

  8. Today is my fourth day into the disease and so far I had only head ache, eyes pain, lumbar pain, and fever. I hope it will resolve without complications.

One suggestion for whom is going to catch it (but hopefully not), be careful with the dosage of paracetamol. In Thailand the most popular brand is Tylenol and seems to be quite heavy on the liver. Therefore if you already have a liver condition it could make things worse. The recommended dosage is no more than 4 g a day which means usually 8 pills, but i would stay far below that if possible.

  9. Hi to all

I just want to inform you that I just got it yesterday and I leave near holiday inn. Not sure I got it here but I suspect it.

I hope I will be fine soon!

  10. Well i suppose if testosterone driven farangs didn't go around assaulting people in the first place, there would never had been any shooting.

Was that 1 or 3 foreigners that assaulted 1 thai man?

Its not like shootings are strictly limited to thailand, go to the US and its an everyday occurence.

So you are justifying that it is normal to take out a gun and shoot ?

And when Thai people attack somebody else are never in group? Or it is usually the contrary?

It does not matter where this happen, it should be punished heavily!!!

  11. Hi

There are about 15 bike shops in Chiang Mai and the bikes they have are usually not high end (but depend what do you mean by high end)

If you like one bike in particular you can go to the shop that has that brand and order from them. I cycle to Doi suthep very often and to be honest most of the bikes are not that expensive (always depending on what expensive means) but they look so because they upgrade wheels, seat post, handle bars etc.

Velocity on Huay kaew road has, specialized, cervelo, Louis garneau, Colnago

Jacky bike is in a raod parallel to nimmanhaemin (was mention in another thread) and has trek

Arm bike has Bianchi, on Huay Kaew road

Bike Mall from the moat to pantip, has cannondale, GT, Cinelly, Wilier, Scott and Look

Cherry bike on road Moo 3 Highway 118 from CM to Doi Saket, they have Specialized, Merida, colnago, Giant

Chaitawat bike at Ratpakinai road not far from Ta Pae Gate, has Merida, Giant, and Trek

These are some but not all the bike shops however should be enough for you to have an idea. Most of them do not have a lot of models but I think shouldn't be hard to pick one that you like.

    Best of luck

  12. Yes, Tropico, but my question is how do cars drive onto a properly designed and constructed bike path? There are barriers and gates which should be designed to separate the bikes from the cars and motorcycles and motobai to keep out the ones you don't want.

The same case you mention is true in other countries - people with motorbikes available will ride them to go 50 meters or less. If they needed to use the foot pedal to start them rather than using the electric starter motor, then they might think twice. Man is naturally a slothful animal it sometimes seems, or at least is often unthinking. But again, the project can be made successful if there is the motivation and the exchange of like views.

I am with you on this and I would be more than happy to have proper facilities but I feel it is almost an utopia in CM. Many of the roads are too small to have space for a bike lane. But they could definitely do it where there is enough space. Or they could develop a series of parks around CM and connect them via park connectors like in Singapore. (I understand this is not Singapore but can learn from it)

CM and its population is growing, traffic congestion is going to be worse and to be honest if more people would use bicycles it would be good, and if they would stay on their paths, car and motorbike drivers won't feel so annoyed and vice versa!

I ride my bike as transportation vehicle and for sport. I love cycling and I would love to see many more people on bicycles and less cars. Roads were not made only for cars and motorbikes but many people think so! Everybody driving or riding on roads should just exercise a bit more responsibility, follow the rules, and be more kind, something that I do not see here and many other places.

I see you ride your bike as a transportation vehicle and for sport.

I really don't get around the city that much and when I am out there I am walking and not really paying attention to the roads other than when I cross them.

Can you tell me is there a lot of bike lanes in Chiang Mai and are they safer to ride in than the same street with out them would be? Also are they connected in any way to another one?

    Hi Hellodolly

To be honest the only bike lane that I saw is the one around the moat, on the inside of it, but as I said cars park on it.

I usually go to doi suthep and outside the city, maybe on the outer ring road or canal road where there is a bit more space and less traffic.

CM is not a cyclist friendly place but eventually it would have to change, I hope.

Yesterday I was cycling with my daughter (both on one bike) and keeping very left but a truck almost hit me with the side mirror......it must have been pretty close!!!!.

Drivers are very irresponsible and bike lanes would be just a nice addition to the city and a glimpse of development. CM cannot remain the same while the number of people and cars augment every year. Some modern solutions are needed to avoid the worst traffic, pollution, accidents etc.

  14. If I do not mistake there are bicycle paths along the moat but I think they are used as parking space for cars!

    That tells you everything!!!!

How many people do you see cycling around? Maybe they would be more if they had proper facilities but I doubt it!

Like somebody mentioned, many people would ride their motorbikes to go just 100 meters away.

I would love to have bicycle paths because I am a cyclist myself but I feel it is perceived not as a priority here and it would be certainly misused!

  15. I've never bought into the "this is not your country" bull crap. THIS IS OUR WORLD. We all share it.

Imaginary borders drawn up by greedy kings and rulers are meaningless and are only there to help enslave and tax their free range human cattle.

Anyone who believes that because you stepped over an imagery line that you are less of a human than you were before you stepped over it, needs to wake up. And anyone who believes they are superior to others because they reside within those imaginary lines need a reality check.

So yes, if you can make the world a better place, or even the lives of a few better, go for it. Screw the laws, screw national pride, screw what everyone else says. Do what you know is right.

    Totally agree!!!

In my view this is what everybody should feel
