  1. Does anyone knows where to get a Thule car box and installation system or similar brand. Could be second hand as well. I have just searched on Google and found only one internet site who offers the system but it is rather on the expensive side compared with Europe.

Anyone know a store. English speaking should be preferred. Thai would be ok too.

  2. Are u American? If yes, as far as I know there is a treaty in place which apparently allows a different setup for companies as well as for work permits. An American friend of mine told me that he works legally with WP, has is own company but no employees and no partner. Maybe worth to check it out or maybe one of the members here know more.

  3. As you are starting a job here, then you will have a work permit. With the work permit you will be eligible for a one time duty and tax free import of personal belongings.

You will just need to choose a removal company or, if it is really not that much, a logistic company who has a reputable partner in Thailand. The process is quite straight forward once the goods arrive they require your passport and work permit. Everything else they will arrange. I have not heard of any issues with customs if you go that route. Just make sure that your belongings will not be packed in any original packing and that they look used.

  4. If you can ship it in a few boxes. This might solve the problem. Otherwise you could talk to one of the forwarders. Most of them do cross country as well. As well you could try at the bus station. Have never used them but as far as I heard they would transport your goods as well for a reasonable price.

  5. I bought a iPad yesterday.

I asked about a 'Contract' so I could pay monthly by Direct debit and was told Only If I had a Work Permit.

I am retired so no work permit.

I cannot be first person who has had this problem.

    Is there a solution ?

    john

Not really. You can go for a prepaid plan, which you would need to top up on a monthly basis. Requirement for postpaid is usually a work permit. Sometimes it depends as well on the branch I guess.

Maybe try True at Siam Paragon. I heard they sometimes do exceptions.

  6. GNC is comically overpriced, and the online stores offer a limited selection, so I decided to make a bulk order for sports supplements from an american website.

The total cost was 10,000 baht so im wondering what the damage at customs will be?

It's a mix of fishoil, creatine, multivit, joint support,etc... I've searched online but cant find the exact duty rates. I realised that if I order enough for a few months, I save quite a lot of money even with $80 shipping*. But i have no idea of the customs charges.

The package will only be a few kilos because it's all small bottles. So hopefully it wont receive any special attention

*Thai online shops charge 50-100% more than US online shops. For GNC it is close to 300% more.

This would be considered a commercial import. If you are lucky, they will let it through if it is shipped via USPS. If you are unlucky you will not only be asked to pay duties and taxes but as well support them with a FDA import license, as all food items, drinks, food, supplements, medication, etc. are restricted.

  7. Alright, I know this is gonna come across like I need to get my tinfoil hat back on, but I'm paranoid with anything to do with Thais and money.

Electricity bill came through today and it seems a bit high. Now OK, it looks like an official bill from the electric company, but I'm wondering if maybe my condo owner has altered a few figures to make himself a bit of extra profit. Sounds paranoid I know, but well...it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you! Anyway, here's a copy of the bill:

    iylpx5.jpg

Now I can't read Thai, but I asked a Thai friend and he said everything seems reasonable enough. My main questions are:

    - I understand I've used 263 units of electric this month. I was under the impression the government rate is 4 baht per unit, so this would mean a bill of around 1050 baht. Instead it's 1637 baht. So there's some pretty big increases added on somewhere. In particular, I'm wondering why it appears for the first 150 units I've been charged 579.75 baht, but for the 86 units after that I appear to have been charged 549.74 baht. Does the government rate really go from just under 4 baht a unit to 6.4 baht a unit after you use over 150 units??

    - What is this 362 baht "FT" charge on my bill? I've no idea what it is and my Thai friend didn't provide a clear explanation. For those who do know what FT stands for, does 362 baht seem reasonable?

    - Overall from looking at the bill, can you guys see anything that stands out as been 'wrong' or out of the ordinary?

If I need to get the tinfoil hat back on fair enough but thought it was best to check.

The calculation seems to be off. According to MEA calculator you should pay THB 874.83 based on the 1.2 tariff.

You can check yourself under www.mea.or.th/aboutelectric

  8. The idea of the owner setting up up the company was to give a little more security for the buyers of the apartmants. There will be 12 in total, each owner will receive 4% share in the company, equaling 48%. 1% will be in the name of the owner (foreigner) and the remaining 51% Thai shareholders.

My initial concern was the what happens after 30 years, how do I know the lease will be renewed. His answer to this was that the company would renew the lease of which all owners have 48% combined.

I'm not new here, I lived in Thailand for 8 years a long time ago and I did have land then, owned by a company I set up but I never knew about the condo/apartment regs. With the new laws regarding companies being set up solely to own one house I have decided to not go down this route in case of possible problems.

I've looked a few condo's but don't really like any of them so decided on this apartment. I know it's not fool proof!

Sorry but where is the security in this equation. You would only own 4% of a company, whereas the current owner with the Thai shareholders own 52%. In my opinion this seems to be a bad deal as they would be able to vote you out of the company or decide against your interests. Except the contract is stipulating something different. But what I understand from the newest laws is, that you are not able to restrict the voting rights of the Thai shareholders. If you do that clause would be void.

  9. Not really sure where to put this as this is not really related to Thailand. Mods please delete or move if necessary.

I am searching for a lawyer, who has experience with Singaporean law. Can be in Thailand or Singapore. Should be knowledgeable of company law.

    All information or recommendation appreciated.

  10. Mbk 4th floor has a lot of vendors. Otherwise fortune tower. But most of them sell the "normal" stuff. Htc, iPhone, Samsung, etc. Seacon Square in the basement has a few shops. As well a brand new oppo shop. If you do not want to travel that far you could check out Robinson in Sriracha. 2nd floor has a lot of mobile shops. If you are looking for the brand shops - Mega Bagna got some, Central World - most bigger shopping malls.

  11. Yes. Tax can be up to 300% depending on Engine size. Furthermore you will require an import permit prior to shipping. Then you will need to get approval from the DMT. A lot of hassle and I think nobody would recommend doing it. Different if you are Thai. Then, under certain circumstances, are you allowed to import.
Your question is coming up quite frequently on here and I would suggest you do a quick search through the forum.

  12. I recognized the street. Taking it almost daily. Most of the drivers are too fast and not in control of the speed. Currently as well they install right turn lanes, which leaves the road even dirtier then usually. This combined with speeds between 100-140 km/h and usually in my opinion unskilled drivers are resulting in more then only those accidents. There are almost daily any kind of accidents on this road, due to drivers taking the curves on the wrong side or underestimating the speed of oncoming traffic. Sadly it is common to have at least one deadly accident per week in this area.his is as well the reason why I always have my car am on as soon as I am starting to drive.

  13. Update:

It appears the MEA app has been removed from the iTunes app store.

I was just about to head out to the Huay Kwang MEA office but decided to give 7-Eleven a try first. 11 days after the due date they allowed me to pay, no questions asked. I'm told it can be difficult to pay there after the due date, so if you find yourself overdue and would like to try, this was the branch at the entrance of A Space Asoke-Ratchada on Din Daeng (Rama 9 MRT).

You can search for smart life in the Thai App Store. And only for iPhone. It is still there.

  14. Usually yes. Most of the companies have a clause that if someone driving is not mentioned then you will loose the insurance. At least it is the case with the international ones in Thailand. Local rental companies I do not know.
