  1. Thanks ubonjoe. This woman IO was full on about me having to totally cancel my multi non-o at the border and re-entering on a tourist visa. She was also pushing for my to go to Vientine to apply for the Non-ed at the consulate. I know I can squeeze about another 5 months out of my current visa if I do one more border run and apply for a 2 month visiting a Thai family member. This would give me plenty of time to apply for the ed-visa.

  2. I am hoping the Ubonjoe will be able to answer this or anyone else with upto date knowledge can help. I am currently on a multiple Non-O based on marriage and I still have about 5 months left to run on this visa. I recently enrolled at a local university and decided for ease I would change my visa to an ed-visa. The woman at the university told me that I need at least 20 days left on my visa to do the transfer at the local immigration office. So I thought I could do a border run and come back with 3 months which would give me plenty of time for the uni to get all my documents together. As I was near the immigration office I thought I would ask the same question and get an answer from the horses mouth. The immigration officer then tells me that I can not change directly from a non-o to an ed-visa but would have to sacrifice my remaining 5 months left on my visa and do a border run and re-enter on a 30 day tourist visa. I found this a little weird that they would prefer me to do this. I asked why and got the usual this is Thailand and our rules. So I just wanted to check if the IO is correct or was having a bad day/got their information wrong. Love to hear what anyone has to say that can shed light on this situation.

I agree. In the last year I have not felt the heat sweltering burn that I had in previous years. I have have even began to feel the cool season chill on its way today in mid north Thailand. I am only 40 years old so not because I am very old I am feeling the coolness. You never know there maybe even sleet in the upper north of Thailand this year if things continue this way.

  4. The guy is full of BS in the photocopy shop. He was just looking to take you for a ride and fleece you of your money. I have been to Savannakhet four times now and ignore these guys in the copy shops as I have everything prepared before going. I have never has a problem and never get trouble from Immigration officers when leaving and re-entering at the land crossing into Myanmar. Glad that you stuck to your guns and did not give him any money, some people are more gullible if it is their first time.

  5. I have only used Grab taxis once while I was in BKK. Just finished shopping at Mega Bang-na so using my wife we got a taxi and she gave the destination in Thai to the driver. Could not believe it when he drove us to Swampy airport. I had no luggage and just shopping bags, luckily myself and the wife thought it was funny and when my wife told him the destination again, he realized he had made the cock-up and accepted a 150 baht rather than the 400 plus baht that the meter was showing. Apart from the misunderstanding the guy was ok and the taxi was fine. Better than previous experiences with the normal meter taxi guys who would have still wanted the full price even though it was their error.

  6. I agree with LiteBeer. Go with gas, as you never know when the power will go out. Gas is pretty cheap and if you find a good shop that will not try and do the 3/4 full but charge for a full tank, it will be cheaper in the long run.

  7. Been to Savannakhet 3 times now and no real problems. The last time I went in December I had everything they needed plus 2 originals of the paper to show that I am still married and they said they wanted copies of them. I just refused to go and make copies just to waste my time and money when the originals are fine. They finally accepted them and took the cash, picked up my passport with the visa. I guess they just like to act like asses sometimes.

  8. If this is enforced I can see a lot of problems with foreigners and immigration's need for us to keep our money in Thai bank accounts. Seriously, what has the finance minister been drinking or taking? Regardless of how long an account has stood idle, surely they can not just wade in and confiscate it as it is not their property and the bank that allows them will lose all iit's customers.

  9. Today I went to a local K bank expecting that it would be easy to open an account. I have my passport with the visa stamped inside and with my wife. I am on a non-o visa which I have had for the past 6 years. The customer service woman then starts asking for a work permit or the yellow house book. I thought as long as you have a valid visa this would be enough but supposedly not. I just thanked them and walked out. Has anyone else had this problem?
