As it has been mentioned before, why going abroad when you can
get an extension of stay within the country?

I used to be on yearly Non-B from Penang with Work Permit.
Last year I stopped working, so went to a Visa Agent here
on the Island. All I had to show was my old Blue WP Book,
my Passport and my Savings Account with excess of 800'000 THB.

Cost me 40'000 THB and they got me an extension of stay,
multiple re-entry permit and do the 90 day reporting for me.
No need for me to visit Immigration, Embassies or Consulates.

I even leave my Passport with the Visa Agent so I would not
miss my 90 days deadline and only pick it up should I go away.

I had a couple of times an issue with this "180 days" rule
whilst on METV or NON-O several years back at the land
border in Sadao. Not on entring the country but on leaving. 
I was supposed to have some kind of Tax Clearing Form and
was sent back to Surat Thani.

Both times that happen to me, I just waited a couple of hours
in a restaurant in Sadao, then went again without problems.

Never a problem when entering the country.

I would even go further and say, if western people wouldn't have been in Thailand

and moaned about the way trash is handled, Thailand would look even more of

a dump then it is now.

Travel just a bit around Thailand and you will quickly see, places with tourists are

often cleaner, not spotless but cleaner than many places where there are no tourists

at all.

BUT - there is hope as I see many, many young Thai people taking environmental

issues serious, more serious than their parents or grandparents ever did. I see

school children cleaning trash on the beaches, streets and parks (no, not necessarily

tourist places but all over the country). I saw small children educating their parents

and grandparents about the impact of throwing just about anything out of the window.

So, there is hope, maybe not in my lifetime but in my children's future.

I reckon that's more of a Myth than a legend.

I lived on Koh Phangan and worked in Samui from 1978 until 1987.

In 1985 Koh Phangans population was just around three/four hundred people.

(You can go and check in the Civic Office). There was no pier, no roads (apart

from a couple of miles down towards Bantai), no cars (just one Jeep) ,

no electricity (apart from a few hours a day in Tongsala), no hospital, no police

station and for sure, no organised Full Moon Parties.

The only way to get down to Hadrin, which was just part of the jungle, was either

along the beach at low tide or a few hours hiking over the mountain. Much easier

was to get there from Samui by longtail boat.

What people believe to be the first organised "Full Moon Party" in 1985, was actually

just an improvised, one off gathering of a few "Hippies" at a deserted beach that was

easily accessible by long tail boat from Koh Samui, without police but a lot of drugs

present. - I was there!!!

That's exactly the well known legend, you are telling - no one mentioned "organized" - and the story also says that it was someone's birthday that full moon night, but nobody remember the name...

As you were there, perhaps you will shed more light to the tale..?

Even before 1985, people went to Hadrin from Samui to see the moon rise out of the water,

play guitar, getting drunk and stoned, sleeping on the beach and being bitten by sandflies

Although I been many times down in Hadrin back then, sometimes from Samui by boat,

sometimes walking from Tongsala down along the beach, I do remember Christmas 1977,

I went to Samui to celebrate my 21st birthday as here on Koh Phangan there was nothing.

No bars, no discos. The only place close to a "nightclub" was the Lamai Inn in Samui.

After spending most of the day in Samui eating Mushroom omelettes, mushroom noodles,

mushroom burgers and mushroom shakes, we decided to go over to Hadrin for the night

to have fun without the dreaded police around.

I remember this Thai girl, her nick name was "Frog" who came with us. Her parents owned

the restaurant and souvenir shop just by the pier in Nathon and organised the long tail boat

for us to go over to Hadrin to watch the full moon rise out of the water and celebrate X-mas

(and my birthday) with sex, drugs, music, sand flies and gonorrhoea

I reckon there must be quite a few guys remembering "The Frog", she was just so desperate

to marry a foreigner, any foreigner and has been quite a few times to Hadrin, so she might

be the right person to ask, when did the first organised and regular party started in Hadrin.

BTW - we did clear up the mess and took the bottles back again, just in case some people

assume, all parties have to end up with a pile of rubbish left over.

2015/2016 - 253 deaths and 2,412 injured in 2,338 accidents,
2014/2015 - 227 deaths and 2,163 injuried in 2,104 accidents.

So in the same time period as last year, there was:
26 more deaths, 249 more injuries and 234 more accidents.

So in fact it's an overall substantial drop of - hmmmm,

I live close to Hat Maerampung beach in Rayong and it's full of rubbish all year round from the fishing fleets dumping plastic rice ballast bags, sodium arc lamps, fluorescent tubes etc. We then have the weekend and holiday Bangkok crowd who plaster the beach in rubbish and the hordes of families in pick ups throwing rubbish out as they drive up & down the beach road.

It's not just a Thai problem, I have seen it in Turkey in national parks where the ground is covered plus the town where I grew up in, in the UK where drunken youngsters will throw their food wrappers away as they're unable to walk 1m to a rubbish bin and that's without the pavements caked in chewing gum.

Irresponsible people with no sense or understanding of culture, heritage and nature are the culprits!!! Greed, shameless western values (such as twerking), and just wanting to have stupid senseless fun are the main culprits of this type of thing!

It is a disgrace and shameful that these people see and the people that defend them see it as having no done any wrong and just having fun!!!

I hope Myanmar or Burma which is just recently opening up do not accept these type foreigners, do not have these type of gatherings and also the ordinary local Burmese understand what nature means to the local ordinary citizens. All "FUN" always needs to done responsibly but the major blame is on the locals who through greed stage these type of parties... I hope Burma sees this and weed out all these idiots and educate the locals on the destruction it brings in the long run...

This is a totally clueless article. Do your homework first buddy. Been on Phangan 16 years so obviously have learned by now to steer clear of the full moon party. But for those that want the truth here are the facts that will come to fruition after that photo was taken.

Once the Thai's and Burmese wade (and snorkel) through the shallow water and comb the beach multiple times looking for money and valuables the beach gets properly cleaned. Every person that enters the full moon party pays 100 baht entrance. The entrance fee gets you a fairly cool bracelet for a souvenir and the money goes to some sort of Haad Rin association. This group is in charge of cleaning up the beach and promoting the party and events on Haad Rin. For instance the new years bikini contest (of which I was a judge multiple years:)), monthly volleyball and football tournaments with prizes around the full moon party.

The clean up includes a quite expensive looking German made beach cleaner that looks like a Mini Zamboni (the machine that ices hockey rinks). There is no question that after they bought the machine the beach is way cleaner after parties. As for the water there must be a lot of floating waste but most of it is kept in the natural bay by the wave action and it gets cleaned after high tide. I dove and participated in the first underwater scuba clean up of Haad Rin and we were all quite shocked as to how little we got out of the water. Most of the garbage was under mellow mountain bar where everyone is on mushroom shakes.

Myself I hate plastic, avoid using it as much as possible and would not defend the full moon party or Haad Rin for that matter. But, what I am saying is that I am always amazed at how clean they get that beach within days of the full moon party.

Although they do charge for Beach Clean Up, it's mostly done

by volunteers.

Travel through Thailand and you come across many very beautiful

maintained villages in the poorest parts of the country and here

on Koh Phangan, despite the huge amount of money coming in to the

economy on the island, the whole place looks a mess. Shitty roads,

playground build and dilapidated within a couple of years, any empty

plot filled with building trash and plastic. Although there is daily

rubbish collection, follow the rubbish truck and you will be covered

in trash.

It seams to me, Thai businesses here on the island have not realised

yet, if you want to make money, you have to put money back in to

keep the place attractive and not just line their own pockets

The US Constitution is printed on just 6 pages with the 5th page being the letter of transmittal. The 6th page contains the first ten amendments also known as "The Bill of Rights" (rights of the people).

No federal, state or local entity can pass any law that runs contrary to that constitution. It has stood for so long because it is simple, gets right to the point, gives most rights to the people, and is very hard to amend.

This is the opposite of what Thailand is trying to do. They are trying to control people and take away rights with a very detailed and lengthy document.
