I think that your "insurance" won't cover you unless it's medically necessary to be admitted to hospital, and would expect you to pay upfront and pay you back later, which would be never. It's their country, you're refusing to pay, they don't need any other grounds to lock you up for as long as they like. I think your being naive to think that they wouldn't...

And then they'll lock you up until you do pay...

A lot of it is they're brought up by grandparents while the parents try to make a living in a city somewhere. The Grandparents can't cope but also rely on their children's handouts to live, as 500 Bht/month from the government doesn't go far. Until this changes not a lot else will...

I'm in the same position, I've bitten the bullet on the 400k and am going for the 60 day visiting Thai wife ext. to give it long enough in the bank. Really frustrating as I'm actually teaching in Mukdahan so I look at Savannakhet every day but can't go there...
