There was always a degree of manners on the roads in the UK though.

It's nothing to do with enforcement here in Thailand, it's a cultural problem as I said and it will be impossible to remedy.

We can clearly see that enforcement here doesn't work, during Songkran tens of thousands were arrested and many vehicles impounded. Result = worst casualty rates ever.

But the biggest difference is that our culture got vehicles when they were low powered devices and not so many of them at that.

In Thailand and other developing countries, as soon as they can borrow enough, they can buy an automatic vechicle which is hugely powerful and danm near drives it'self!

It only has to be pointed in the direction you want to go and press the go pedal!

No need to learn hill starts or necessary gear to use for long down gradients etc etc.....

No need to look in a mirror when you pull out or change direction because everyone drives like this and we are all looking out for each other are we not?

IMHO, it's human nature to push boundaries and get away with what one can. We learned this as children.....

Only when the boundary is firmly held in place are those boundaries respected, although, often times, grudgingly....

Some of us oldies complain that the youth of today have no respect for anything, and some of us blame their parents for letting them get away with it.....

The behaviour of the public changes very quickly when a new law is introduced and enforced, even more rapidly if enforced with prejudice!

Educate by all means, use the TV and newspapers before, during and after the Thai soaps.

Then PROSECUTE and roll out harsh penalties to ALL - equally!

Use the fines to pay police a proper wage and give them proper training.

    Prosecute police who accept bribes.

    Confiscate vehicles and crush them.

Of course, many won't like this because it will become a Nanny State and you can't get away with anything anymore..........

Everyone will become responsible for their actions.....

Disagree. We were never like that in the UK or Ireland mate, ever.

The problem is almost entirely cultural, and lack of enforcement only symptomatic of that and only part of the bigger problem.

The belligerence, arrogance, overwhelming ignorance, selfishness, immaturity, recklessness, disregard for the law, lack of responsibility, unwillingness to learn, etc. on the roads here will never be solved unless they confiscate all cars and go back to the buffalo.

Folk think I am joking but that is the only solution.

I suppose it depends how far back you choose to go?
My Dad got his DL before DL testing was invented.....

I was driving before seat belts were invented.....

There was no drink driving law.....

There was a law to ensure your vehicle was facing the correct way an night and you had to have a red rear facing and clear front facing light on your vehicle over night.....

The reason folk drive in the way they do is only because of laws and their enforcement.....

I guarantee that in severe rain, you will still see pedestrians getting splashed by selfish drivers (and that is against the law),

not to mention speeding in poor visibility. Heck, look at the horrendous motorway pileups....

What a load of bullshit ive never seen an ambulance belting out smoke with big bore exhausts.

The problems are not the ambulances the problems are Thai drivers, no common sense, uneducated, uncoothed, selfish, wont lose face by moving over and completely ignorant to anybody but themselves.

True, but we were like that in the west before loads of laws were introduced, and enforced.

That is the problem here. No enforcement.

  4. Thais should be taught to do what they have to do in Germany

I vaguely remember this system being widely advertised on German TV and in the newspapers for ages in the late 60's, or was it early 70's?.

Then they announced that they would test it.

A fortified fire engine would drive through the safety lane and if any vehicle was damaged, the insurance would not pay not could the vehicle owner sue the fire engine. Something like that.

    So they could start here?

    And for Motorway driving?

Mosquitos are not attracted to UV-light. Butterflies and wasps are.

One could do a co2 emitter by putting some sugar, yeast and a bit of water to a bottle. Then use a small hose to direct the co2 inside of the bug zapper.

The yeast produces little C02, would the fan waft it away?

Have you tried taking Beta-sitosterol for your prostate? From the research I have done, one would have to take a ton of saw palmetto for it to do any good. I have been taking Beta-Sitosterol for years and years...the only thing I take. ( that and exercise. A bulging belly will put a strain on your prostate ) I hit the sack, sleep like a baby throughout the night, and wake up every morning with a pssy rdon ( true story )

Don't know the cost of electricity in you area, but it is very easy to construct a NEAR INFRARED sauna fairly cheaply. If you're not sure how to go about it, you can find instructions on the net. I built one for my apartment in Canada. Works fine, but not as good as the big comercial jobbys. But it does save me a trip to the local gym.

Don't know where to find beta-Sitosterol in Thailand if you would like to try it. Many companies in Canada and the Usa will ship worldwide. But I have NO idea of the cost...duties, etc.

OK started taking Beta Sitosterols 320 mg in a combination pill with zinc, D3, E, C, thiamine, etc. But I also did a 5 day water fast, weight was about 73Kg before the fast, dipped to about 68 Kg at the end (empty gut) and now

at about 69 Kg, so about 4Kg lost in 5 days. See the graph, the top graph is calories consumed.

Trips to the loo during the night are halved or better!

Too many variables to decide what is responsible.

I have also had a regular sauna on Sunday mornings.

I've done a lot of very sweaty sunbathing as well so I have also detoxed (I guess)

I'm still eating during a smaller time window, skipping breakfast and eating mid afternoon, then a mini fast till next day.

Also restricting calories but ensuring that my nutrition is good.

I'm using cronometer.com to monitor nutrition, bio-metrics, exercise etc.

Aside from the economics is there anyone on TVF that can explain the Chinese toiletry habits. After our recent trip the wife will not go into a toilet cubicle if a Chinese woman comes out of it as they have pi*sed all over the toilet and the floor. How would they do that? Even the Thais can squat on a western toilet.

There are very good reasons why a western toilet should not be Squatted on. The main on is their design.

They are designed to be sat on and the body weight is evenly distributed around the ri,.

If squatting the whole body weight is placed, first on one foot then the other before becoming balanced.

The same happens when getting off the squat.

The porcelain is not necessarily strong enough to withstand this treatment.

Here are some example of many:-

Considering that China GDP per capita is actùally lower than that of Thailand, one may wonder how the average Chinese is able to spend more than Westerners who are five to ten times wealthier???

Either the Chinese are especially spendthrift (seriously?) or the Westerners are especially thrifty...

Averages are made up of the "Haves" and the "Have Not's".

Maybe it's only the Have's who can afford to travel, and then with a limited budget compared to Westerners?

Perhaps, therefore, the total number of Chinese visitors to Thailand may have a limit much lower than at first glance?

    Time will tell.

As has been mentioned, the Westerners have been a tourism support for 30 or more years.

The influx of the Chinese is only recent.

    Someone mentioned the Russians.

There are some new and incredibly rich Russians but I don't think that they are the ones who are generally seen.

Perhaps like in the 50/70's when we Brits found cheap package holidays in Spain?

It was a special treat that we blue collar workers could just about afford!

We also went slightly mad in the sunshine and all the goodies that were available in Spain and not at home (like cheap wine!)

In Thailand, we all know what is abundant here but might not be so in one's home country.....

By the way, just because they look Chinese, dosen't mean that they are necessarily from China.

I met a huge group of Taiwanese in Samut Songkran the other month and they were very nice and well behaved folk.

I spoke to a few of them and their English was better than most Thais that I would meet in that location.....

(My Mandarin is very poor but they made the effort to try to understand me!)
