  1. And then another Thai phoned....graduate of university...speaks Thai, English and French and can drive.......starts work next week!!

Sounds great. Congratulations. I might be able to use someone like that too. Can you let us know about how much you will be paying them?

My suggestion: Live in, 10-12 K per month

    Live out, 12-15K per month

    (Full Time worker)

  2. I have had differing experiences there over the last twenty years. For sure it depends on your teacher. My suggestion is Ajarn Oranute, the best teacher I had there.. Definately for me not a waste of time :o
I'll side with Loaded: In my experience Ms O is a lecturer, not a tutor; and, that was duly passed on to the upper echelons at AUA over a decade ago. Nothing has changed. Are Thai tutors at AUA or anywhere for that matter required to have the equivalent of, say, a CELTA? Mind you, I'll concede Ajarn does seem to have a firm grasp of Thai.... whereas I am still learning.

My experience with Ajarn Oranute was more than 20 years ago, but I doubt her style has changed much. But AUA gave me an excellent foundation to learn Thai. It worked fo me very well, but it may not work well for you. During that time, the only mistakeI made was quitting my reading and writing because I couldn't see a need for it. I do communicate in Thai at a high level now, but I would have had good pronunciation from the beginning had I not quit reading and writing.

  3. not another where do I learn Thai thread!

Look mate you'll have to go with AUA because if anyone suggests another location, they'll be hung, drawn and quartered. Personally, I studied at AUA and thought it was crap. My teacher lectured for 2 hours - that's not the way to teach language normally, but it is the way languages are taught by Thai teachers in general. Buy a do-it-yourself kit and go at your own pace.

  4. I've always had this kind of work done by an Iron Fabricater. Obvously, in Chiang Mai you can easily get many different qualificatons. Mostly that had to have examples to show me. Sorry, it has been a few years, so my numbers are likely no good now

  5. No difference in prices charged at places like airport plaza. You might find something you like. I prefer wororot market because the oldest gold dealer in chiang mai is there, plus you might find some designs not available anyplace else, and they do a lot of special work not done in some other places

  6. Before the mod..ators move this topic to motoring it refers to a specific individual in CM.

I have seen photos of a small motorcycle in CM that has been converted to a drive from wheelchair motorcycle.

If the owner or anyone who knows him could PM me or contact me I would really appreciate some information as one like it may serve my needs well when I get there.

Harry, you might try contacting my friend 'German' Joe at 053-251-1856. He is a motorcycle mechanic as well as a fabricator of various types of motorcycles. I'm sure he can make something for you at a resonable price :o

    Thanks ajarn

Ajarn, I should be arriving in early November as my compensation payment is now through.. It isn't much so don't get too excited.

I would really like to take you and your wife...and kids if you have any to have a meal and talk about the changes that have taken place in the 25 year since I lived in Thailand.

I have a bit of a disability in that I am an left leg amputee but more that I have severe emphasaema so have trouble moving about. I currently use an electric wheelchair.

Please let me know if you would be able to see me when I get there.

    regards

    Harrry

PS I speak a little thai still so thai places are ok.

Happy to meet any other 'gimps' living in chiang mai. It would be too quiet here without us :D

  8. Are you familiar with the artists here -- I know them from the Night Bazaar, but they may well work elsewhere too -- who can do drawings and paintings from photographs? Soon after moving here a couple of years ago and seeing the kind of work they can do, I had family portraits done, from photos I had or had sent to me, of a few different friends and their families, and sent them to them as gifts. The portraits were, or at least so I was told, very much appreciated. You can arrange to create a family or group portrait that does not actually exist as a photograph, by taking individual photos of the people you want in the portrait, and arranging for them to be put together in a composition of your choice.

[Oops. Just noticed this was one of Nienke's ideas too.]

Many years ago, I had a portrait of my brother and his wife done at the Night Bizzare from photos. She hated it, and nerver thanked me... Never liked me since then :o

  9. the problem when banks sell repossessed houses they are normally run down ,in the wrong area ,anything thats any good is sold to the staffs family or friends

That's exactly it. By going to banks you will be looking at the left-overs that nobody wanted. First would be the bank staff themselves, second their families and friends, and third any people in their network who have indicated to them to go look out for good properties, then the bank staff make a commission on that. Whatever's left after that gets posted on those boards at the bank office that you're looking at. :o

    In your dreams :D

Plenty of proof that neither one of you know what you're talking about... Got any proof that you do??

  10. People here do respect the law, if they understand it. I also noticed today that I was parked in the bike lane. I knew it by guessing. It does seem like a stupid idea to me, too. There isn't any place to put a bike lane without infringing on parking- sorely need parking in my opinion, much more needed than a bike lane.

If by "understand" a law, you really mean it doesn't interfere with their current activity or inconvenience them, then yes, I agree, that law they will respect. Laws that don't meet those criteria, not so much. Now that's true to some degree almost everywhere, but here, ESPECIALLY when it comes to vehicles and traffic regulation, it's pretty blatant. I'm used to watching out for unlicensed youths and licensed adults speeding at me the wrong way on major thoroughfares and minor alleys, else I'd have been in more accidents than I've already had. But, I must say, it's more of the charm of the place, keeps things interesting.

This is one of my favorite reasons for living here. If a law doesn't make much sense, i.e., stoplights or stopsigns in the middle of nowhere, then why bother with it? The bike lane occupies the only space in front of a business to park, and with no bicycles using it, then why bother with no parking? The cops don't care, so why should we? :o

  11. Just stay away from TOT if you can.

I have problems with them for 3 years now. Since the start.(I have no other option)

The guy who installed it sold his own modems instead of those from the TOT (we found out later when we had a problem with it. He installed a temporary code that kicked me of after just 2 weeks (idiot).

Does not matter wich option you take.

You will not receive any decent service from them and they hook up to many user on one line (up to 56).

Upgrades do not help the service and the speed stays bad.

They block all possible accounts (my former loxinfo accounts) or servers (for your sites) with others, so you have to use their SMTP (who is on a blacklist for the last 3 weeks) so your emails bounce back. Because these idiots do not have the right people to prevent it or to remove them from the blacklist)

Your only help is the service TOT centre 1100 because the local CNX ADSL department changes phone every couple months and doesn't even pick-up the phone or in case of a local problem just takes the horn of the phone. (I visited them when they did it)

If they would be a private company and not part of the state mafia they would be out of business for a long time allready.

Ditto for my TOT connection... :o

  12. I have read many publications that say the moat is 1 square kilometer.

It's very close to 1 sq. mile (1.6km on each side) which is strange because I don't think Imperial measurements were ever used in Thailand.

Yes, I meant to say 1 square mile, but I thought I was mistaken because of the imperial measurment. :o

  14. I never had you down as someone who beleives the printed word Larry

From recent conversations I have had with business owners in CM the oulook is grim for high season this year.

Joe public booking his holiday in our high season has a vast choic eof places to go.....why would he want to come here after what he reads in the press in his own country

I printed it for other people to read. Though it is largely a PR stunt for the Nation and the Kingdom, I tend to believe it more than a few farags here. I think that there is no reason to skip Thailand because of what is going on here. The Phuket folks were complaing because the airport was on strike a few days, nothing that was going on in Bangkok was bothering anybody, it seems to me. For the PAD, the only way they have been effective is to close an airport. I don't think it will expand beyond what it already has, but who's to know now?

Business owners always complain. I don't have any reason to believe them over my own opinions.

  15. Foreigners unfazed by situation

    By SUNDAY NATION

    Published on September 7, 2008

More than 50 per cent of foreign visitors view the recent clashes between pro- and anti-government demonstrators as "normal" in a democratic system.

The clashes led to the declaration of a state of emergency. However, most visitors are happy about their trips and would return.

Abac Poll director Noppadon Kannika said yesterday a survey conducted between Tuesday and Friday, which quizzed 532 foreign tourists and business people in Thailand for the first time, found most knew about the street riots and emergency declaration.

Almost 60 per cent viewed the incidents as normal in a democratic system.

Some 49 per cent said they were affected by the protests, including travel-plan disruptions due to airport closures and railway strikes.

However, they were generally satisfied with Thailand, including the culture, food, tourist attractions as well as safety of life and property.

They were less satisfied about politics, economy and social justice.

The visitors' overall happiness scores before and after the clashes were almost the same - 8.02 and 8.06 out of 10 respectively, Noppadon said.

A group of 97 per cent said it will visit again despite the recent incidents and 99 per cent said it would encourage others to visit the kingdom, he said.

Noppadon said these visitors had probably seen activists in other countries and believed the political turmoil here would end peacefully because the riots had stopped.

  16. The best I have had in Thailand was just inside the door of the Rimping out off the superhiway enroute to Mae Jo. A little cart with some of the most outrageous flavors! I reluctantly tried a taste of one, not being a big ice cream fan, and we spent an hour having bits of everything they had.

Had we been going straight home, I would have packed a few Kgs out of there..

I agree, That ice cream, packaged in a very strange way, is delicious! :o
