  1. Good to hear that you don’t need a certificate of Residence from police/Immigration/Embassy, if you’ve got a work permit. A friend who went to my local DLT recently, confirmed that this is correct info.

  3. And for a 5yr to a 2yr a medical cert was required....

Yes, I had to go from a 5yr to a temp 2yr licence as I was no longer on a Non-Immigrant visa.

So you were on a tourist visa then, when they reduced you down to a 2 year DL???

  4. Totally agree. I was not looking forward to the occasion but the staff there are really helpful. As IsanFarang said; super easy.

Let’s hope nearby Sisaket are as easy, as mine are due next month!

  5. I think part of the problem is Thais generally are not taught to "think and reason" when they grow from youngsters through their school years. It strikes me that there's a decided lack of intellectual thought curiosity in the average Thai, and I'm not talking based on experience with bar girls or Isaan peasants.

They're taught to memorize things, and told supposed facts. But not to question why things are the way they are, or consider how they got to be that way, or how they might be different, or even, how things are here compared to how the same things are in other parts of the world.

So, I go to a large private graduate-level university here in BKK, and I find accepted master's theses written in English by Thais or other Asian students where sizable portions of the written text have clearly been cut and pasted from other sources without any attribution. Or students are paying others to complete their assignments. Or students who defend their thesis, fail, defend again, fail, defend again, and then finally are passed just to get them thru the system.

Or, I have a Thai acquaintance who wants to buy some kind of house. They have a general idea of their budget and go to talk to loan officers at some banks. Come back saying the banks will give them a purchase loan that will cost XX,XXX baht per month. What's the interest rate? Dunno. How about how the monthly payment will change after the first couple years promotional rate? Dunno, didn't ask.

It just seems to go with endless variations of those kinds of things around these parts.

Thai history lessons do (must?) not include reference to failure/errors or mistakes so nothing can be questioned or lessons learnt by history.

  6. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous wherever you do it, its part of the thrill.
My personal expierience with riding in Thailand is fairly limited,  i have had " big bikes" here for about 8 years and only ridden around 40 000 kilometres here, however in my country of origin i have been riding for over 40 years.
I have fallen off heaps of times in my home country and never had an accident here.
As a lad i raced motorcross and as an adult i road raced, i am not a particularly talented rider and i am rather conservative i will never ride a bike without some sort of protective wear, fully enclosed crocs as a minimum, and i approach the road here a challenge.
Thailand is no more dangerous than any other place if you ride to the conditions, remember your own limitations and expect that every other vehicle will not behave like they would in your own country.

This is THAILAND, these little buggers own the country and they can drive/ride however they like, expect them to drive against the traffic flow, use indicators for no reason, speed, overtake on blind corners and generally do everything that we think is wrong.

Grow some testicles, get out on the roads and enjoy this country for the great place it is, just remember you aint in Kansas anymore Dorothy.

  8. The most significant thing you wrote. Get a lot of experience and then try, but even then it won't save you. Most of the bike riders killed in LOS have been on bikes since they can stand up ( I've even seen a new born being carried while the driver used one hand on the handlebars ).

If you want to see the countryside, most places have local buses, which allow you to see the scenery without risking your life.

Yeah, they never crash, do they!!

  9. Just bring a good helmet with you, if you have one. Or you can buy one here before starting your trip.
Good helmet, gloves and boots/shoes are a minimum requirement.

As above, just expect the unexpected, keep the speed down and you will have a blast. Best way to see the country I think [emoji846]

  10. I used to do over the counter at Bangkok bank but they stopped doing it about a year and a half ago and started sending me to their ATM..(both branches in town).. ATM 220 Bt per transaction...max withdraw 20,000 Bt... then I used Krungsri for quite a while.. free over the counter until about six months ago  then they started charging 220 Bt as well for over the counter at least they do it and you can get any amount you like.. but haven't tried over 50K.. their ATM is 30,000 max so still use it  220 Bt.. other banks here just point to their ATMs.. could be they don't speak English and it is the easiest for them.. or maybe policy ..don't know..    Is it different elsewhere?

Yes. Only 150b in Aeon ATM’s because they are not Thai crooks.

  11. Just returned from the local office in Bankalapuk today after doing a 90 day report.

I was advised that when I come to make my next extension, due February 2019, that in line with "Thai Niyom" I would be required to submit a photo dressed in traditional Thai costume. Western dress is not acceptable.

Immigration Pol LT Col Sordik Watchalotaporn imformed me that, similar to all rules related to immigration, this policy is to be applied nationwide.

I was futher advised to wear traditional clothing everytime I visit any government office.

I am due to Tax the car at the DLT on Monday, but that will have to be in the afternoon, after my wife sources my clothing.

Be warned, they are serious in regard to this matter. Fines up to B1000 will be levied.

    Happy April 1st!
