I think the only hope to possibly stopping the massive amount of corruption in Thailand and changing the general Thai attitude that corruption is okay is for the 2 most highly respected institutions in Thailand, namely the Royal family and the Buddhist Monks, unite to do a massive campaign against it. They could really promote how Un-Buddhist like corruption is, how much it hurts the country, your fellow Thai and the Thai culture in general. Someone has to put their foot down to stop this and those 2 institutions are the only ones that have the moral authority to be successfully at doing this as most Thais in general do listen to and respect those 2 institutions . Otherwise I think it is hopeless and will only get worse.
The monarchy I would agree could do something, maybe an audience with his majesty & some of the higher ranking officials with a word in their ear that enough is enough.
As for the Buddhist institution I'm not so sure that that is as squeaky clean as most would think.. not all are above temptation as you would believe them to be.

50k - 60k would cover the cost for a reasonable event, offer that as up front money to be partially recouped from envelopes.. if she insists on a more elaborate party then tell her to ask her close family members to contribute to her sons event.

I have news from my friend of 2 hurricanes & a Yak1 in Russia.. but still hoping something will emerge from over here.

I do hope the government don't carry out their threat of closing all non-registered guest houses early next year.. estimated to be more than 50%..coz the beaches will be ever so crowded with tents every night !!

But a certain minister insists a problem doesn't exist ??

The rich get richer & the poor get poorer.. another shinning example of poorly thought out policies.
I'm all for the bottom end getting a wage rise but within the Thai system it's not affordable by the owners who wish to reap all the rewards.

Another institution in crisis.. how much more does Thailand have to suffer or tolerate under this regime

As with most things corrupt or illegal yes you have to start somewhere.. you could liken it to the war against drugs..
So do you start to take out the poor guy's at the bottom of the ladder (which never has any impact) as the operation will just continue with another peddler, or do you go for Mr BIG at the top which sends a strong message to all below that things are about to change !!
Thailand has neither the power or the motivation to stop corruption because within the Thai system it now benefits too many.
Until the threat of loss of position, face, worldly goods or more long term imprisonment it will always be the same.. just hollow talk.

PTP can smell a backfire on the way.. keeping the reds away from court so as not to give the impression that this is another manipulated outcome.
Abhisit & Co will have their day in court (unlike someone else) they will prove their actions as leaders of the government at the time& cannot be held accountable for the death of a bystander by a stray bullet.
After they are acquitted I wonder what PTP's next ploy will be ??

Quote: Natthawut said parties involved with the boxing match in question had said they did not arrange the appearance of Thaksin in advance.
So as he just happened to be in the area at the time of the match, waltzed up to the ring, climbed in uninvited, picked up a microphone & started to share his feelings with the nation regarding the monarchy ??
Another probe, another waste of time.. nothing will be done, nobody will be held accountable & nothing will change..

I think if I was a Thai child being taught irrelevant rubbish for 8 hours a day, in an oven for a classroom by a teacher who is less than qualified for the position, coupled with the only prospect of progressing through the education system knowing that it's not what I learn but who I befriend along the way that will get me a good job later in life would drive me crazy too.

Quote: Mr Thaksin’s appearance during a Thai boxing event in Macau over the weekend has stirred an uproar in Thailand but the deputy commerce minister stood firm that it will not have any negative impact on the government since the former premier merely showed his loyalty to the monarch.
Thaksin shows loyalty only to himself, his family & his pawns.. how he can say he has any respect for the king is beyond me, especially after his past & recent actions. As for his younger sister showing loyalty during his majesties birthday ceremonies I don't know how she can even stay in the same room as him.

To drastically cut costs why not start with just covering the "employee" with a suitable medical policy but not his entire family & pets !!
Or if that is felt to be a bit harsh extend it to their immediate family but at a 50% reduction ?

If the "high street loan sharks" actually made loans affordable to those that needed it the most then the "underground" variety of bottom feeders would dry up & disappear.

I think if Thaksin ever achieves amnesty or sets foot back in the country for any reason 2010 would resemble a squabble in a kindergarten playground.
It would definitely open the divide further & bring it onto the streets for an all out war !
That would be the time to leave the "land of smiles" far behind & seek a better country to reside.

Quote: Law professors will have to wait eight to 10 years for the completion of a three-tier judicial review before concluding where the case will lead in terms of legal merit.
It will lead exactly nowhere.
It's just another scam to hopefully give the Reds some freedom with Abhisit Vejjajiva and Suthep Thaugsuban tied up in court.

Quote: He said the public should keep a close watch on the plan, because of the expected high cost of storing oil and the cost of constructing depots. He is concerned that this cost might be passed to consumers.
It's a shame an ex-minister didn't say something similar about the rice pledging scam !!

As stated above a high % of Thai girls working in tourist resorts are fossil hunters..

The only way to seriously stop corruption is to come up with 100% proof.. undeniable evidence that will stand up in court.
Then have the courts actually prosecute them & hand out severe punishments, including repossession of money or property gained by corruption.
Name them, shame them in public & prevent them from holding a position within government for life if a government official.
If a company director then a life time ban for holding such a position again.
But Thailand will never ever stop corruption because it is an excepted way of life by the majority, from the lowest of levels to the very top.

While sitting back enjoying your ultra high speed travel on a low cost Chinese designed train operated by Thai engineers what's the last thing to go through your mind??
Your arse !!
I think I will stick to a more confrontational mode of transport until all the wrinkles have been ironed out.. about 10 years !!

Absolutely.. you got the breath in your lungs all the rest is a luxury!
No lights,TV, radio, internet, fridge, aircon, fan, recharge for your mobile.. life must be a real bitch !!

The court found that the 43-year-old was caught in a volley of gunfire when he ran out of a central Bangkok apartment block to see what was happening after hearing soldiers open fire at a minibus that had strayed into an area under army control.
Then surely his death was one of "miss-adventure" by his own actions as apposed to one of murder by AV.
Wrong place, wrong time NO BRAIN !

This must be a huge dilemma for the Yingluk regime, they feel they must join the merging Asean countries or suffer a loss of business, & likewise with the EU & USA in free trade agreements, but at what cost to Thai manufacturers who up to now have enjoyed a relatively uneven playing field in their favour.
While consumers ultimately gain from more choice Thai producers will be cringing thinking that they will not be able to compete with cheaper or higher quality imports.
The only reason the government hasn't come up with a plan so far is that it is still trying to figure out a way to join the FTA's but without having to import anything in return for it's new found export market.
When you look around at the car market alone the choice is limited to around half a dozen car makers as import prices drive up costs on other models, can you imagine all the European models being allowed to enter the country at competitive prices..
a lot of sleepless nights ahead I think !!
