I guess that must only apply to certain countries. I've never been asked for a return ticket by immigration, the airline I'm using, occasionally yes. Proof of accommodation is also weird, why do you need it? When I travelled as a tourist I chose where to stay when I arrived at my destination. -
This is just sloppy work by S Korea immigration. The whole point of an ETA is to avoid this hassle. I hope they received compensation for the wasted journey and time.

I agree, I regularly make the same trip and have no complaints. The arrival and departure times at both airports suits my wife and I, and it's direct.
