  1. It's the same old story all over Thailand. They love to talk about what's wrong, point the finger of blame at other authorities, but nothing ever gets done. Samui, like Phuket which has turned into a toxic cesspit, will continue down this road as long as the good old MONEY keeps rolling in from tourism.

I've traveled the world but few places compare to Thailand as being nothing short of a garbage dump. Look at the mentality ... I've seen Thais stand not a foot from a trash can and yet the prefer to throw their garbage on the ground.

In my days on Phuket it was nothing unusual to see rats crawling all over the place, especially in restaurants in the Town.

I would say that they ought to be ashamed of themselves but you can't shame the ignorant and uneducated. Take a walk anywhere in Thailand and there are dogs shitting, people throwing garbage on the floor, rats running around restaurant tables ... any they have the audacity to call Thailand a high class tourist destination ... it's cleaner in my toilet and by a remarkably long way.

It's a shame and another reason I left ... I just didn't consider living in a shit hole as a nice place to live but I guess there are some that like it that way.

You forgot to mention that they would rather piss up against a coconut tree than to walk 10 meters to a toilet !

  2. There are 2 problems here, the first is obviously racism and known racists should be hounded out of the police force, they can't be hard to find. The 2nd and most potent is the gun. I believe that Britain has it just about right and gun toting red necks are extremely rare in the UK. We all lose our tempers and make a rash judgement from time to time and I'm thankful that I've not been carrying a gun on some of those occasions. I'm not saying that I would ever have used it but I'm happy not to have had the choice.

Should the policeman in this instance have had the choice? I don't think so and I've never thought so. The black guy that ran away would have been apprehended eventually and his minor crimes dealt with, instead he's dead and the a hole that shot him might just as well be.

  3. You better have said ......he electrocuted himself and not found hanging from a door handle.

    I was thinking......what was he a dwarf?

    Anyway.....may he Rests in Peace.

Plenty of people hang themselves from door handles. You don't need to tie a rope to the rafters and jump off a chair.

Maybe not, but you'd have to jump out of the window in my house!

  4. I asked the Embassy why I needed the visa and this is the reply.

Emergency Travel Document (ETD) is the temporary passport, due to Malaysian Immigration policy, they are not allowed the British citizen holding the ETD travelling in the country without the visa. Please check the visa information with Malaysian Embassy before travelling again, please contact Tel 02 629 6800.

    Yours sincerely,

  5. I've had my passport stolen and have an appointment at the British Embassy next week to submit my application for a replacement passport (which is probably going to take 2 months to process) and to apply for an Emergency Travel Document which I can apparently get the same day. I have flights booked to Malaysia on the same evening but have now been told by the Embassy's consular section that I will need a visa for Malaysia which will take 2 or 3 days and a visa to get back into Thailand which will take 3 to 4 days.

Does anyone know different? I thought that the object of the EDT was to allow travel between countries in such an emergency.

Of course I can't get anyone on the phone and I live in KP which doesn't help

  6. My pension is paid into my bank account in the UK and I transfer sterling to my Thai bank as and when I need it. I am not taxed in the UK (having moved to France in 1997) and I don't pay tax or bank charges in Thailand. I'm surprised that the OP who is "clever" enough to live in Thailand as a tax exile is asking such questions and if you're paying tax at source on your UK pension Godders, you're obviously not so clever as UK pensions are paid gross and are only subject to income tax if you are a UK tax payer!

I think that this is a "look at me I've got plenty of money" thread.
