  1. One would think that by now the TV readers would not take the headlines as issued by TV as gospel, there has been NO national emergency declared, just some copy editor at BNO NEWS who has too much time on his hands and doesn't have a clue on what an Executive Order means

The White House has merely issued an Executive Order

You know, now that I think about it.

hmm... last line of second paragraph in the file u linked to :-

and I hereby declare a national emergency to deal with that threat.

  2. Hi Shuddee,

I am just a Linux user and not yet participated in any development yet.

I would like to say that Linux coding is not like the wikis where people contribute for the sole purpose of making the wiki useful to others.

Linux coding is more like if I require some feature which should be a part of the software, ill code it myself and then upload it for others to use, comment and improve. Its also been said that finding a bug is more difficult than fixing it.

If I find a bug in the software I am using, I would file a bug report for the sole selfish reason that it is an annoyance for me. Unknowingly I would have helped the community as a whole.

If not done yet, I would suggest reading "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" http://catb.org/~esr/writings/cathedral-ba...zaar/index.html it is the holy bible for open source developers.

  3. Ive ordered stuff online in the past... but nothing for the last year or so... these guidelines may be outdated

Its a risk u need to take.. Certain points would help you minimize the risk of being taxed.

    1) Price below 1k baht no tax : Get seller to mention price below $20... when we send sample of our products to customers abroad we mention "FOR SAMPLE ONLY HAVING NO COMMERCIAL VALUE" <-- this would work best.

    2) Use EMS. Ask the seller to send it thru the national post office and not UPS/DHL/Fedex <-- the customs people would see your package and say "ahh that must be something cheap in there... otherwise theyd have had sent it via a decent courier". Whenever i got sample via an established courier, the customs always took a peak inside, not the case with EMS

    3) If seller refuses to follow the above then try n find a friend in US who could proxy for you?

  4. I got the following SMS from Bangkok Post news alert service at 4:07 pm today. Have been scouting the web for quite some time but didnt get any more information.

Fire at a bar in Pattaya killed two Indian Tourists

Does any of you know more details?

  5. Just now I was showing a thai friend some website in Thai language on my Fedora 7 notebook. She said the characters are all messed up. The vowels are kinda out of place.

Now I would be needing my notebook to print documents (with some Thai words) and also intend to use my notebook to learn Thai.

Does anyone know what do i have to do to make Thai show up correctly on my notebook?

I am using Fedora 7 (I think default installation. Dont think i installed anything extra for thai script - not sure)

The screenshot above is how firefox displays Thai, gedit places the vowels about 1 line above from where it should be shown. Thanks in afvance for any pointers.

  6. A new angle on the story. : Is the U.S. trying to manage Thailand’s elections?

    http://facthai.wordpress.com/2007/12/21/ju...%99s-elections/

Readers familiar with the workings of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency might attribute this timing to dozens of prior U.S. attempts to destabilise countries and their economies and interfere with legitimate elections. Is the U.S. trying to manage Thailand’s elections to the benefit of its military?
  7. An Indian movie set to release in January 2008 - Romantic comedy about an indian thief who falls for a Thai bar girl. Jokes mostly revolve around language/cultural differences.

It was supposed to be released on 14th Dec, but now postponed to 11th January 2008

Bombay to Bangkok is a story of Shankar (Shreyas Talpade), a petty thief somehow reaches Bangkok. In Bangkok, he faces the omnipresent problem. He meets the girl of his dreams but she is all Thai and he can't converse with her at all!

Well, what follows is a potpourri of fun, adventure, cross- cultural dilemma and of course India Thai romance. Although the film is a Hindi movie, it remains to be seen if it can be dubbed into Thai at some latter stage. This might well be the beginning of Indian movies being appreciated by Thais.

  8. On December 12th 2007, people of Bangkok got to see an amazing performance by Surya Kiran - The ambassadors of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The HAL HJT-16 Kiran (Ray of Light in English) is an Indian two-seat basic jet trainer built by Hindustan Aeronautics. Used by the Indian Air Force for intermediate training for pilots trained on the HPT-32 Deepak. It is used by the Indian Air Force aerobatic team Surya Kiran and Indian naval acrobatic team Sagar Pawans.

well... if the 26th most popular website is not working for many of its users... then there is obviously something fishy going on.

now I have to resolve to turning on proxy after reaching office and then turning it off when reaching home (buddy).

I see it as a glitch in their attempt to log all traffic to wikipedia to be able to monitor who is posting what and who is accessing what.

This is not a DNS issue as even using a hosts file with wikipedia's IP didnt help. There is no problem is domain resolution.

@Deksan : Totally agree with you.

@wimster : True took you for a ride. my office IP(True) is in the range 58.x.x.x and always has been. Still cant access wikipedia directly.

Sajal <<- is looking for his Tin foil hat.

  10. im a linux user for over a year... using fedora 7 ...

but it is still not ready for mainstream usage, I need to borrow a win xp pc or fire up resource hogging vmware to work on following.... mac can do these tasks i think.

    1) Ms publisher... found it one of the easiest tools to make booklets, catalogs, flyers and posters... tried scribius... but then i cant pass it around and its tedious to use.

    2) Photoshop... unsuccessful in instaling it on linux, use mainly gimp, but need photoshop for some of their nice text effects and playing with web templates.. GIMP is cool, has some more features than photoshop also... but some things are limited.

    3) some tools here and there... webdev tools like banner maker...etc

    4) to preview what my site would look to a windows user,

    5) flash

that said i am very happy on the linux environment. love the CLI .. can do many tasks with one command which would take a windows user to buy additional software or keep on pointing and clicking.

  11. Not quite sure how to approach this subject without unleashing a whole can of whoopass on myself, but I have been in Thailand many times with a UK born colleague of Indian parents and there is an undercurrent of racisit feeling towards him from quite a few locals on many occasions. Not sure if targeting India is so smart if this is the general view.

Cobalt 60, it is a valid point, but as you say it is an undercurrent. From an economic standpoint, the two countries are getting closer and any underlying feelings some Thai's have for Indians should not be felt by tourists to Thailand. In all my years in Bangkok, I have never seen an open display of this undercurrent, but you do hear comments so you know it exists.

Being an Indian in Thailand i too feel a very small degree of racism... so small that it doesn't bother me, but some of my Indian friends do feel it. There is no open display, and on many occasions miscommunication due to the language barrier may also be interpreted as racism.

The upside is that within the last one year, ive noticed that there has been a big change in the way a Thai looks at an Indian.
