  1. does this mean if i get inspiration from thailand for use in designs back home i am breaking the law, say i'm sitting at a bar in bkk putting these inspirations into a laptop do i risk arrest?

as per the law even thinking about putting these inspiration into a laptop would be illegal and if someone was onto you and proove what u were thinking you would have broken the law as you probably dont have a work permit which entitles you to work at that bar.

  2. If you conduct bussiness in Thailand you must have a work permit. Therefore if you are purchasing gems to sell in your own country, you are conducting bussiness in Thailand.

    Barry

a tourist pays his hotel bill, isint that also conducting business?

if a tourist buys some handicraft isint that a trade?

how is this diferent from buying jems for personal reasons? <-- he can always change his mind later ;-)

i can imagine the men in brown standing on every hotels cashier arresting the farangs payin their bills.

  3. hey DD, be gentle with us morons will ya ?

I have heard that the gas prices haven't been affected, whilst some say that they have.

either way, doesn't stop the taxi drivers still complain about the petrol price increases...

if i were the person selling the gas then id definately increase the rates.,....but as to what ive heard is that the taxis who are benifiting fur to the increase in petrol prises...

just try to drive on sukhumvit road after midnight...(specially on weekends) it is soo crowded with slow moving/parked empty taxis.....asif Khun toxin announced freebies to every taxi driver on the road.....

i dont think their plan to make parking spots for 3 ot 4 taxi would help....they would need atleast 50 on sukhumvit......another 50 near RCA, another 50 near rachada soi 4.....

  4. UBC Red Screen of Death Gone!

    Irritating Red-screen Gone

RDN: -- I thought the "red-screen" button-pusher had fallen asleep yesterday, or gone on strike. (Oops, no such thing in Thailand). But no, today there was a long announcement on UBC saying that even though they get no revenue from the adverts (ahem), they will pass them through so that subscribers can benefit from them.  :o

Yes, and they don't have to pay the red-button pusher any more.

Anyway, at last a good move by UBC and no more of those irritating red-screen announcements.

    serious??? not kidding i hope?

    im gettin UBC tomorrow!

  5. SUVARNABHUMI AIRPORT WILL BE OPENED FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO VISIT THIS NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER

Transport Minister PONGSAK RAKTAPONGPHAISAL (พงษ์ศักดิ์ รักตพงศ์ไพศาล) insisted that the pre-opening of SUVARNABHUMI International Airport for public visits should not have any negative impacts towards the commercial sector.

Mr. PONGSAK said the Ministry of Transport will allow the general public to visit and take photos at the new airport during this November and December. He stated that this occasion would not affect the commercial sector, as the airport has already been designed to support the general public. However, they will be able to visit certain unrestricted areas of the airport, such as the departure zones and the check-in counters. Security will also be tightened up during the next couple of months.

The Transport Minister said the visitors would be more familiarized with the new international airport, prior to its actual opening date. Foreign tourists will also be able to visit SUVARNABHUMI Airport, and thus, they can help promote the airport to be the regional hub of Asia.

so now tour companies are adding one more tourist spot on their itenary?

  6. The measures include registration of Internet cafes or on-line game shops, as that applied to clinics and drugstores

Does anyone happen to have a link to this news story in Thai ??

Internet cafes = clinics and drugstores...seems a bit extreme to me maybe a mis-translation ?

Though I have seen a drugstore that is also an internet cafe :D

    seen one on asoke road.....

it was a drug store + cyber cafe + parking lot (saw a car parked inside)../....

    :o:D:D

car park in a drug store....

  7. Its pretty well known that TV does cause learning issues, keep in mind that programs on tv as well as video games are "designed" to hook poeple in.

its not well known but a fact that TV does help me learn. discovery/national geographic channel....

The opposite side of that however is revealed after an exhaustive research project that was recently completed. The results were just published and is the collective work of a large team of world-recognized scientists from all the major fields of study. They categorically concluded that watching the Fox News channel unquestionably lowers someone's intelligence and increases illogical and irrational thinking.

    totally agree....

    fox news is really shit....

but the blaming TV is just not the answer....

fox news has all the right to show the bullshit they show.....its upto the viewers now to watch news 'unquestionably'

  8. Why oh why is this airport called 'Suvarnabhumi' in English.  In the Thai pronounciation, the final 'i' is not sounded and there certainly is not a 'bh' in there either!  My wife pronounced it in Thai as 'Suvarnapoom', which is how I would also pronounce it (having been told by her that the final มิ is not pronounced).

So we are going to have loads of western tourists telling taxi drivers to go to Suvarnabhumi, which will probably confuse the ###### out of them.

It's about time someone challenged the accuracy of the authorised transliteration system...

in sanskrin suvarna means golden and bhumi means land...

actually correct sanskrit pronounciation would be something more like swurnbhumi...

im pretty sure the meaning in thai is same.....

  9. According to the movie "Pirates of Silicone Valley" - the US roadside service stations had early "bat and ball" game machines while he was still trying to get MS started up - he was apparently fascinated with the game code and the new colour monitors (which were actually monochrome with strips of coloured acetate layered over them giving bands of colour - RGB tubes were way too expensive at that time for anything except TV).

    ---------------------------------

i think as per the movie bill gates was more addicted to poker than anything else...

during college we used to game a little in a cafe back home....CS and quake3....one of us was a thai type adict.....but in the end he has got the best grades in college and now has the best job out of us......so an example online gaming is not all bad....

  10. When I'd finished laughing, I realised that it's just another case of the underpriveleged getting the short end of the stick again. Naturally the minister's son will still have his "X Box" and be able to play on line with his super quick ADSL connection that daddy pays for :D

i dont understand whats wrong here.....

    case underpriveledged

they spend all their time n money on these gaming places.....while they should be studying hard to make a good future and move to the priveledged section......

addiction to games would probably ruin their lives n career....

    case minister's son

whats the problem here if the dude keeps on playin online games and gets sevierly addicted?

One sympton of gaming and online chatting is a corruptive effect on language. Your entry stands as perfect proof.

    :o

what does gaming have to do with crruption in language? do we expect a "crackdown on corruption in language" anytime soon?

the corruptive effect on language is due to chatting, spell checker in outlook....

i wouldnt call it corruptive effect......evolution might be a better word.

im sure shakesphere would consider your language corruptive....

daddy has made stack loads of money for him to game all his life....atleast he wont follow his daddys footsteps.....

  12. These products offer GPS, not sure if it helps?

hey./...this seems interesting.....in case anyone knows thai can they tell if they solve my purpose?

what i really need is the software to guide the driver visually....sound instructions would be a boon....

ive written to them but very unlikely ill get a reply anytime soon...

this project im just makin as a hobbie....if the result is cheap ill setup some comemrcial operations regarding this....

snoophound: i think finding the via motherboards are next to impossible in thailand....ive tried asking in many shops here all draw a blank face....for the test unit id order it from the states...a friend would be traveling in december....if it cant wait then ill need to get it shipped....

the case + mobo + dvd + HDD should be like $400 US itself....

bulk production would be frm china (where else?? ;-) )

PS: any coder knowledgable in this field pls PM me....would prefer it to be linux based....wht im thinking is a linux application to do this....

  13. tx a lot for the replies....

the eThaiCD stuff surely doesnt seem to be compatible with the GPS systems....

i need more of a software where i can just enter the destination the software would then guide me the way....pity all the softwares i found on googling were for US or western europe...

i hadnt seen mp3car.com but its a very interesting site....have been visiting similar sites....

from what i learn is that garmain only sells full device.....not the software for PC platform seperately....so kinda useless for me(unless some geek has managed to port their software to the PC)

i wont do all this only to make a box which can ONLY play mp3 and browse internet(btw nice timepass on bangkok traffic ;-) )...i need the GPS also....

  14. hello all...

im looking for a GPS navigation software to run on windows 98 box....

my intention is to create a car PC based on mini-itx from VIA...

i would use any serial/usb port GPS reveiver for getting the location information.....and use a car LCD display as the monitor....but i need to know where can i get a software for navigation...

i dont want a ready made system for many reasons (cost, no-fun, not many features)

my custom box could be designed to do the following....

    1) car navigator...

    2) connect to net via GPRS....browse whiledriving.....

    3) mp3 player...using external USB disk/sd card....

    4) search for car if stolen....hehe

    5) DVD player....

and many more features cheaper than an off the shelf car navigation system....

so in case any one knows about/used a GPS software here in thailand do give me some pointers....

    cheers...

  15. hello ppl.

as mentioned earlier in this thread we are making a new database of potential blood donors and reciepent.

ive had to much to do last week so couldnt work on the site much, however, please start listing yourself at http://bloodbank.thaivisa.com/default.asp?action=AddDonor

this data would be listed once the actual site is ready.

    your privacy is guranteed.

all the visitors to the site would see is your nickname, age(only a rough idea like 20 to 25 years, etc) and your blood type.

they would be able to send you emails/sms thru the site without knowing your email address or mobile number.

it is upto you to contact them back.

  16. I was working on IPTV solutions here few months ago...maybe u can find my old post here....but gave up due to bandwidth limitations here....and a major ISP rep told me FTTH they arent even thinking of in bangkok...planing/implementing is far off....the nearest thing would be a gigabit ring by an ISP here which serves very limited buildings.

now this FTTH has potential....but my interpretion of "a few thousand baht a month" means 10 to 20k
