  1. never really use domain controlers or active directory.

Which distribution u use really doesnt matter. Its all about personal taste.

Ull need to Install samba server and set-up the shares/directories. samba uses the same protocol as windows file sharing.

It is a very simple setup if all u need is a file server.

    > Is the transfer of the company’s files with long filenames possible?

    Yes

  2. Did you say months of super-fast internet? Im sorry but i don't believe you!!!!

I may have misused the word suprefast, but besides the taiwan quake my true connection has been prety good... that is besides today.

On performing some tests, i noticed only HTTP is affected... mails, ftp, ssh, everything even faster than normal.

Its likely that their transparent proxy serving my area (or my package or my adsl account) might have been the cause....

True has been generous to me... When i see others normally cribing abt their internet connections i really didnt understand them untill today :o

  3. since today evening, my web browsing is really slow.

After months of superfast internet, today the web pages simply wont load.

Its been 5 minutes since ive clocked on compose, this page even hasnt loaded fully, as i am typing this. The same case for all sites, even my own site.

    Locally hosted sites open fast.

Sites which use google adsense seems to suffer more as the page needs to wait for adsense to load fully.

    I am on true@home 2.5 Mbps.

Do let us know if even you are facing this peoblem.

PS: Finished typing this post and it is still loading the smileys towards the left.

  4. If you are so paranoid about 'something' reading your mails... stop using email...

almost all email services have anti spam and anti virus features... - their anti spam and anti virus softwares are 'reading' your mail.

if u use webmail... the mail providers webserver is 'reading' your mail and then passing it onto your browser.

Your browser 'reads' the incoming mail and parses it and displays on your computer.

  5. kinda scary but ill have to go with monty. I too read that article, even after the matter becoming a police case, it took them a long time to trace the IP to the physical location.

If this were true... the most vulnerable would be webmasters who manage their site(s) from a web interface... The "Big Brother" could keep a watch at people accessing/uploading to urls like http://domain.tld/admin . Tracking ftp uploads would need co-operation from the web hosts.

Frankly the whole idea sounds a little paranoid. If a farang is runing a website while staying in thailand... He would definately spend revenue earned here in LOS...

Besides... there r other options also ;-)

  6. It looks as if UBC won't be showing the world cup cricket. It's not scheduled in there magazine. It will be shown on South Africas Supersports channels.

Reminds me of the Soccer world cup - not shown on UBC. Then they had the ordacity to claim they're the home of soccer.

    Last moment update from UBC

TrueVisions (a.k.a UBC) would be providing the world cup cricket as a prepaid add on to their existing customers.

    Price

For a whole tournament (51 match days) = 3,500 baht

For the last 10 match days = 1,000 baht

  7. > Whether FTP is an accepted and needed protocol for website maintenance.

FTP protocol is accepted and is the norm, however if you need to mantain the website from outside your office i.e. going thru external networks you would want to use SFTP

    > What background and training is required to configure a server for webhosting?

Some Linux experience. and also to google your way around.

    > How much UPS or electricity generation backup is needed?

I think you should have atleast an hour. The colocation centers normally have 12 to 24 hours backup on UPS and a diesel generator for longer downtimes (but I doubt if they ever have to power it up)

    > Is it important for the website to by up 99 percent of the time? How does downtime affect Google rankings?

Google doesnt like downtime. It really pisses off googlebot if he cant reach your site.

    > When would a company need its own hosting server and what staffing/training is required?

Few scenarios some may be posted already:-

    1) Kickback for employes

    2) Noisy Toy with lights to decorate your office.

    3) Need full control of your server - Need to run specialised applications which shared hosts wont allow.

    4) The website is a high traffic website

    5) Paranoid about security - depends on how you configure it.

    6) Most users to the site are within the office network - Intranet

  8. I haven't searched EXTENSIVELY, but I'm pretty certain you will not find such things in the usual computer/IT outlets. There should be vendors here that import these items and sell them as consultants, not as retailers, but I haven't checked that channel, not in Thailand anyway.

As I spend a lot of time working in Taiwan, I checked the retail "3C" outlets there and, despite the fact that a couple of the devices I was looking for were Made in Taiwan, no one sells them there. I suspect, as far as VOIP hardware goes, Asia is pretty far behind the curve. We have a consultant there which supplied us with 4 and 8 channel FXO and FXS devices and IP phones. But even they can not find us a single-line FXS. Eventually we ended up buying from a US web site and shipping here.

i know the guy who keeps the 2 port FXS unit for mobif.com.my in thailand.

if you need it you can PM me for his mobile number.

btw do you happen to know where can i get a FXS to FXO converter?

  9. Slowly switching to Linux too. Still lots of open questions and problems, though. For stand-alone very easy to install (easier and faster than Windows!) but connecting computers is still a miracle to me....

I'm running Suse 10.0 as dual boot. Still wondering if there is a beginner-friendly (i.e. understandable) how-to somewhere that explains what happens if I choose a specific option. So far I do teach myself searching the net for all my questions, but it is very tideous.

all my main OS is still windoze...but slowly making all my applications OS independant... that way itll be easier to eventually change the OS......most of the components i use are already opensource...

i had tried ubantu linux a while back on virtual machine....it was very easy to use and seems to work out of the box.

    http://www.ubuntu.com/

it seems to have become really popular now

  10. 1, The windows system/sucess was copied from Apple anyway.

Yes... what fewer people know though, is that Apple stole the idea of the computer mouse as well as the idea of a graphical operating system from Xerox... :o

    Well...

apple didnt exactly steal from xerox....

xerox 'donated' the concept to apple...

What bill did to apple was totally legal...but unethical...

    - i think ive watched the movie more times than you ;-)

    totally unrelated to above....

I just dont get it why do ppl complain abt the greed of m$...

they have every right to charge whatever they feel. They are here to make money and keep their investers happy, not some social service....if you dont like the price dont buy it...thats simple....switch to linux...

But simply accusing anyone of overcharging doesnt sound right to me.

the price is high cause there are takers at that price...

I think last year m$ had introduced some lower priced windows xp specifically for thailand in mind...

I use a lot of m$ shit on my pcs and servers..some pirated too....cause i simply dont have the time and patience to switch entirely to OSS.....doing it in parts...

whats funny is that the folks at M$ feel its unfair to them that Free software is free.

  11. A few other points -

    w/h tax should be:

    For rent: 5%

    Services: 3%

    Advertisement: 2%

    Trasnportation: 1%

VAT only for services used in Thailand. If you provide service to a foreign company, to be used out of Thailand, no VAT should be collected.

For products, VAT only for those sold in Thailand (but you probably know about this one already)

What you have told me is more or less echoed by the accounting guy...

    just thinking....

why when i pay me telephone bill i dont have to pay any witholding tax? isint that a service? or it goes under 'Exempted by toxin' category? :o

  12. Interior Ministry to encourage people to bike

BANGKOK: -- In the face of rising petrol price, the Interior Ministry is going to encourage people to turn to bicycles.

Caretaker ACM Kongsak Wantana Friday said he would convene a meeting on Monday April 24 to discuss how to implement the idea. He said he was hoping to launch bicycle lanes in every province across the country.

Commuters, especially government officials, will be encouraged to ride bicycles for good health and energy saving.

    --The Nation 2006-04-21

ahh...sounds like our beloved toxin is still calling the shots....

    nothing has changed

    Hi G,

Thanks a lot for your help.

Lets see what the acount guy has to say abt this...

    much clearer now...

*Thinking* my service might count off as advertisement also...

So in short for my work i need to pay...7%vat 3% witholding(client pays but reduces off the invoice)....15% withholding while remiting abroad....incometax on my profits....

grrr seems like im working for the government rathan for myself ;-)

  14. You need to withhold 15% out of any payment you make to a foreign service provider.

    Hi G,

    Thanks for the info,.

What i understand is when i pay the foreign service provider i pay 15% witholding tax...

But any idea if i need to pay any tax before this?

any witholding tax to be paid when the local thai client pays me?VAT? or any other withholding tax?

  15. hey all...

I have some tax issues i need to get clarified.

We are a thai registered company belonging to a parent company abroad.

Our parent company offers some online IT services related to access to some data and some consultancy.

Now we are required to offer such services on behalf of our parent company here in thailand.

any ideas on how to invoice the client. What are the taxes involved?

in short we would like to collect payment locally on bahalf of a foreign company(not disclosing the foreign companies name to the client) for some comission, doing everything by the book.

Would also be consulting an accountant later this week, but would help if anyone here can give their opinions about the tax laws.

I suppose there are witholding tax involved, but got not much clue...

    thanks in advance.

    cheers.

  16. CHAPTER XII

    Amendment of the Constitution

    Section 313.

    1) a motion for amendment must be proposed either by the

Council of Ministers or members of the House of Representatives of not less than one-fifth of the total number of the existing members of the House of

Representatives or members of both Houses of not less than one-fifth of the total number of the existing members thereof...

Or wait a second, there's another one!

    CHAPTER XI

    Amendment of the Constitution

Section 211. An amendment of the Constitution may be

made only under the rules and procedure as follows:

    (1) a motion for amendment must be proposed either by

the Council of Ministers or members of the House of

Representatives of not less than one-third of the total number

of existed members of the House of Representatives or members

of the Senate and the House of Representatives of not less than

one-third of the total number of existed members of both Houses.

    http://www.parliament.go.th/files/library/law11e.htm

How is it possible that the same article is listed under different chapters and different sections?

The first text mentions one-fifth, the second one-third of the joint houses. How bloody difficult could it be to have one version of the Constitution for the country?

No Itellectual Property rights whatsoever!!! :o

That is totally BS, probably bad translation.

    Here is the correct one.

    (1) a motion for amendment must be proposed the richest person in thailand, wether the people agree or not. Thai people and other ministers are not allowed to revolt or disagree. The richest person in Thailand is defined as the person whose(family included) wealth is higher than any other person in Thailand.

Edit: Dec 5th, the line "Thai people and other ministers are not allowed to revolt or disagree." was deleted.

Lets see what Apr 2nd brings
