  1. I don't need to see funny street signs to get a laugh. I have helped out a hill tribe family and I get cute e-mails from the young girl. It is obvious that she has an English dictionary and is trying her best to write me a message. It takes a lot of reading between the lines to get the gist of what she is trying to convey. I can understand how the "misteaks" are made on street signs. .

  2. I'm not sure what actually happened to the bike rider, but one thing is certain and that is lack of planning when designing the road. Annual water flow does not seem to be accounted for when building many Thai roads. Washouts seem more common than elsewhere.

  3. Thanks for the laughs, guys. I really enjoyed theblether's tale. Isn't just about everything that goes on between the sexes a game of smoke and mirrors? It's all about expectations.

Fortunately, I don't need any "padding" but I sure have to watch what I eat now, and I have to continually exercise to stay slim. There is one certainty and that is the law of gravity. The gals with big boobs when they are young usually have trouble with weight as they get older, and for sure their formerly lovely boobs are going to droop.

  4. This 5 year olds mother drives like this, and she will drive tye exact same way with her 5 year old 15 years from now.

The problem is all laws favor scooters too. If a car hits a scooter even though 99 out of 100 times its the scooters fault the car will get the blame. I live in chiang mai and everyday I see scooters going around parked cars on the roads switching lanes without looking... or they come out of a soi... instead of stopping and looking they just go around the corner... they know u will stop for them. Its what thailand has allowed...

I believe you have mistaken Thai road rules.

Most main roads have scooter/bike lanes clearly marked out. You aren't supposed to drive your car in those lanes.

So when a scooter comes out of a soi, it has right of way in the scooter lane. They only have to give way to other scooters already in the lane.

Thai roads are a river, cars are the rocks, scooters are the water that flow around the rocks.

That is one of the better descriptions of riding in Thailand that I've read. Traffic all flows like water and everything that doesn't flow the same way creates an obstruction. There s no question that what happens in Thailand is dangerous, but there is nothing any foreign group can do about it. All you can do is expect the unexpected and take care of yourself. It makes me sad when I see Thai mothers taking risks with their children, but I understand that there is nothing I can do about it.

I actually enjoy riding a D-Tracker motorbike in Thai traffic. It's far more "interesting" than riding my Yamaha XT 250 in "boring" North America. If I rode my bike in Canada like I do in Thailand then the Canadian police would lock me up,

  5. China is probably like Japan was in the 1950s. My father told me that in the 1950s the Japanese products that were being exported to Canada were crap. Then, Japan got smart and hired Germans and Swiss to bring in Quality control. Within a few years the Japanese were at the top of their fields and were even superior to USA products. The US were forced to improve just to compete. It happened with South Korea as well. I think China will learn the same lesson.

  6. As much as I may disagree with certain laws against drugs I try to follow the laws of any country that I'm in. Anyone with half a brain knows that Thailand and Malaysia are harder on drug offenders than in most Western countries. If a person is willing to take the risks then they have to accept the consequences. If you don't like the laws of a country then go somewhere else. Sorry, I just don't have much sympathy for those that get caught. I know that riding a motorbike is very risky in Thailand, but I don't expect any sympathy if I get hurt and I'll have to deal with it when it happens.

I don't wish anything bad to happen to anyone, but I just have to shrug my shoulders when I see people intentionally flaunting the laws of Thailand.

  7. 5000 baht per month for room in Thai hotel. About 300 baht per day for food and another 400 baht per day for entertainment. I ride a lot around northern Thailand on my motorbike and stay in 400 to 500 baht a night accommodation. That is on top of my monthly hotel payment. I spend less in Thailand for the 6 months I'm here than I do back in Canada where I own a small home. I drink very little alcohol and I'm happy eating Thai food. Because I'm female I don't spend money on hookers.

  8. I think Winnie pretty much explained it in post #6, and some others have pretty much backed up what Winne wrote. Anywhere that you have an active party time city complete with sex tourism and beaches then it will attract the more seedy groups of people who prey on the drunken tourists. From what I've been told, cities like Angeles City in the Philippines, and Rio in South America, make Pattaya look like a church choir concert.

By contrast, Chiang Mai is more of a city for expats. It has a small red light district, but what city of that size anywhere doesn't?

Allegedly 300+ short-time hotels in CM. Seems a bit like overkill to me but I guess all those uni girls need to earn their tuition fees somewhere.

I guess I just don't travel in your circles. I've only noticed the farang oriented ones in the Loi Kroh road area. But I'm sure there are many for the Thai trade. I just don't have any cause to visit them. The bars and cafes in the Nimmanheman area seem a little up-scale to be hooker bars.

I actually read the OP's whole long story, although he could have shortened it and still got his point across.

There is no way that any of us here can actually know what happened, or even the OP knowing what is actually going on. But, it is quite evident that the aunt is manipulating the OP's girl friend/fiancé. All he can do now is damage control and get the woman and her child out of that situation as soon as possible. It would be far cheaper in the long run to get the woman as far away from the aunt as possible. Rent her a room in a Thai hotel in an entirely different city. There is always work for women who actually want to work.

However, if the woman wants to stay in the same situation then she has her priorities wrong with regards to the OP, and the OP better accept his losses and move on. I wish him the best of luck, but he did walk into a delicate situation with very little prior planning.

Lady i think you seriously underestimate Thai family values specially in Rural area's in Thailand very different from what you are used to in canada. If the woman he intends to marry had some balls and serious intentions she would have told him not to buy her all that crap like i-pads and such and apperently aunty runs an illegal gambling den so she must be making some cash of herself so no need to buy a car to bring baby home from hospital or build extra room to her shophouse from his hard earned cash. They where doing fine before khun farang appeared in there life .

No, I don't underestimate Thai family values. I understand that perseived family values are very compelling to family members, even when it goes against their own best interest. Young women allow themselves to be sold into sexual slavery by their own parents and don't run away. It is a hard cycle to beat, but at some point people have to accept responsibility for their own actions. Too many people don't.

In the OP's case he is between a rock and a hard place. All he can do now is damage control and cut back on the funding. He still might be able to salvage something out of the situation. As I said before, none of us here know all the details... including the OP himself. Our answers are only based on our own experiences and don't necessarily fit this situation.

  11. Again, I don't disagree with you, but why would an educated man want a relationship like that? He would be better off using sex workers and a maid.

Guessing here but suspect western morality/Christian guilt trip thingy.

Using sex worker = bad man.

Using wife = good man (or at least acceptable).

I don't understand it, but using hookers generally makes many western men (including me) feel bad about ourselves.

Agreed on that. It is the BS we've been brought up under and stuck with.

  12. I onice saw a 2 year old standing on a moped doing a "king of the world" titanic stance with his dad was travelling on the 181 highway from Chiang Mai to Doi Suket.

Balanced perfectly until Dad needs to stop of course.

    Crazy Thai Drivers and Riders.

Falangs are even worse over here and they should know better.

    What a stupid comment.

What has this got to do with Falangs?

How many Falangs have you seen riding a motorbike against the direction of traffic with 3 passangers and not one helmet between them?

I have seen my fair share of Falang riders/drivers who were driving badly but nowhere near as bad as some of the Thai driving that I have seen here.

I see farangs riding against the flow of traffic every day, and I see farangs on scooters with two or three family members every day.

I'm not in the habit of backing up Homeownership on the forum but you seem to have misunderstood his point, which is that farangs do it and should know better.

If you haven't seen stupid farangs on a motorcycle here in LOS then I fear you are in a minority of one.

There's a horrific video on Liveleak of 2 western males who were splattered. In the video is their powerful motorbike and the corpses of the two males in shorts and tees who were not wearing helmets and most likely flip flops. One guy's head is missing Most of it is missing. His brains are in a different area. The other guy looks like he's jelly. If more westerners saw this video, maybe they would heed the warnings.

I actually doubt it. There seems to be a certain percentage of the male population that enjoy the chest thumping bravado of taking silly chances on motorcycles. I see them here all the time in Canada.

That is different than Thai women taking young infants and children on motorbikes. They somehow think that Buddha will take care of them and they have no input at all.

  13. There is street smarts and there is university smarts. One is not necessarily better than the other. It all depends on the life style that you choose to live. There are lots of university professors who would not survive a month in the jungles of the Amazon or the arctic tundra, but the uneducated locals do quite well there.

Where foreign men tend to make mistakes is they are sexually attracted to pretty, young Thai women , but expect the women to have the same values and ideals as they do. Sorry, leopards seldom change their spots.

    2 points to answer here.

"There is street smarts and university smarts"

Usually stated in its many forms by people who have no qualifications at all (or married someone with no qualifications at all).

"Sexually attracted but expect women to have same values as men"

I agree often women don't share the same values as men, it's all about "me" and "my worth" and "what I can get" for many women. Men often expect loyalty, duty and a sense of fair play, which are their values, but rarely get it.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I was trying to make sense of the OP's topic of why an educated man would marry a girl with no education. When you also add a different culture into the mix then you have a recipe for disaster. I often enjoy the company of street smart people with little or no formal education, but I would not want to live with them long term. You just run out of things to talk about. Sex may be important in a relationship, but it takes so little actual time that there has to be a lot more to a relationship than that.As a previous poster stated, very few educated TV posters. For the few that are educated,

Educated man marries much younger uneducated girl = sex toy/servant.

Why would you try to talk with a sex toy/servant? you don't, you just issue instructions on what you want done next.

Again, I don't disagree with you, but why would an educated man want a relationship like that? He would be better off using sex workers and a maid.

  14. Just be glad the Thai police are spending their time with road blocks and not out trying to catch farangs who constantly break the traffic laws. Occasionally we get caught and pay a small fine, but that is about all. If I were to ride in Canada the way I do in Thailand the Canadian police would lock me up and throw away the key.

    Samui, Mr A's reggae bar.

    View from Mr. A's bar.

Looks lovely, Dancealot. I haven't spent enough time in the beach areas of Thailand to contribute to this thread. From those photos I owe myself a visit. But, one thing I've learned in the short time I spent in LOS is a lot depends on the company you are with. I would quickly get bored on a lovely beach if I was alone with nothing to do but sit on my butt. With my red hair complexion I don't tan, and experience has taught me that sandy beach areas are not good for marine life and diving. Sitting alone at a bar isn't much fun either, even if the music is great.
