  1. Hi, in a bit of a predicament - finished my job (in Samui) on the 28th Feb.

My 1 year work permit was still under consideration in Bkk (done through the lawyers), so I was getting monthly extensions on my non-im B (all this done in Bkk, not by me)

Anyway, the last day of extension was the 6th March, so I went to Samui immigration to get an extension (i leave for good on the 15th)

They told me I couldnt extend at Samui as the paperwork was done in Bkk - i tried to explain that I didnt care about losing the 1 year visa/work permit as I am not coming back, I just needed an extension.

They gave me my passport back and told me I would have to go to immigration that day to sort it out.

One lady their told me I have to go to immigration in Bkk - which is imppossible as I have connecting flights and another man told me just to leave the visa and pay the overstay.

I have no idea what I should be doing - I am scared that they will kick up a fuss at the airport, even though the immigrration officer told me it would be fine to pay the overstay.

I just need to know - if the visa has expired on the 6th, is that it - I will just have to leave at the airport and pay up - alternatively, could I go on a border run and come back on a tourist visa.

I am very confused as the 1 year working visa is very different to the non-im B.

And yes I know overstaying is stupid, but they didnt really give me much of a choice when i went to them to do the right thing.

    Cheers

  2. I find the current situation very interesting, and am following it as much as I can in the papers and on the box. I also enjoy having something a little more serious to chat about with my Thai friends, other than the usual old day to day stuff.

I think it will be a very interesting few months and it feels funny that I will be back in the UK and there is the potential for so many changes to come about here, and I will miss these things.

But other than skimming the surface, I find politics pretty boring and usually a load of crap. And thats about as far as it goes for me :o

  3. Hi Doonagirl, im not exactly sure about what you want advice on - is it about whether you should come or not, or about what to do about your mates situation.

I would say that you should definately come to support your friend, but also remember that his head will be a bit of a mess right now, and you may need to give him and the Thai girl some time to work out what they really want to do - as at the end of the day, it is a baby on the way, and whatever happens he has to support the girl. Its a silly situation for both of them to be in, and I would think, if you were thinking of getting together with this guy - well, I would stay well away for the time being whilst he gets it sorted out. Just be a good friend to him.

It take two to tango and all that, so he has to take full responsibiliity for the baby, so whether it means marrying the girl or whatever, you should be there to support him (and her) all the way.

Im sure the Thai girl wont kick off with you, what with a baby on the way - though you never know :o Good luck with that!!

  4. Since moving to Samui, I took less money and went from 5 to 6 days a week. It totally wiped me out, as I really enjoy having my 2 day break - one day is NOT enough to relax/recover from hangover/ tidy house/go shopping/go to the beach and all those things.

I think if I had 5 day weeks, my jobs here would have worked out alot better than they have.

Anyway, not a problem anymore, as I finish this week, so everyday will be a holiday :o

  5. People on the TV forum talk about gluten-free diets so I thought I'd post this.

Last week McDonalds revealed that their fries contained both wheat and dairy products. They may taste great, but the wheat products can cause gastrointestinal symptoms in people that suffer from celiac disease. In fact gluten, a protein found in wheat, can cause damage to the intestines in people with celiac disease.

    -a

I could do with a mcdonalds right now

    What would you have Markuk?

  6. I don't really mind if McDonalds puts small amounts of anthrax in their food.

It really hits the spot when you haven't been around Western food for a while. :D

    I agree :D

McDonald's isn't food, end of story. Watch Super Size Me and see for yourself. Their french fires stayed in a glass jar without rot for over ten weeks I think it was. DO NOT EAT IT! :D

Actually, I very rarely eat Mcdonalds, however both times I watched super size me, I didnt get to see the end as I was off out to buy Macdonalds - not quite the right effect, im sure :o

  7. Hi everyone,

I've been reading your posts over the last couple of days and found them informative and entertaining. So now I've joined up.

I'd also be interested in meeting up with people in Phuket for drinks and a laugh.

    Cheers

    Hi Ausladyinpatong and welcome.

Would love to join you for drinks, but unfortunately im on a whole other island with no plans for a visit :o

    Have fun anyway :D

  8. What a slapper. Who is she trying to impress?

She is in the wrong country to try this rubbish.

I think that most will agree that Thai women at least have more class in their little finger than this sad example of Farangdom.

I think she would fit in quite well in Lamai actually (well maybe without the bum on show) - the girly bars round there are full of girls with micro hotpants and bra's, not too many classy Thai women around those parts im afraid.

  9. I know quite a few women here who have taken early retirement, or have packed up to start a business over here, all but one of these women are with their western husband and there are a fair few of people around like this.

Like Skylar said, the The TV board doesn't reflect the farang population in Thailand. And im sure very few of these people would be regular posters here.

I would eventually like to retire here, but thats a long way off yet - wow, ive got to get through university yet!!!

  10. Best advice about Samui: Don't bother. It's a dump.

Ned - Did anyone ever tell you - if you dont have anything good to say, dont bother saying anything at all :o

To the OP - lots of nice places to stay in Samui, Chaweng for the nightlife, but if you want something quieter then Bophut, Maenam. Lamai Wanta resort on Lamai Beach is excellent and good value for money. They just opened a new restaurant there and the food is Deeeelicious.

When are you coming to Samui?

  11. I dont really think Thailand is a dangerous place (apart from the roads in Samui :o ), but just recently I have had 5 friends burgled/stolen from, 4 who are living here and one couple who are long time visitors (passports, cards etc stolen)

I know this doesnt exactly mean danger as such, but it is a bit of an eye opener as it certainly seems you are hearing about these kinds of crimes alot more often.

And if this is to "experienced" expats, im sure there is a huge number of regular blinkered tourists being robbed, mugged and burgled every day.

It does start to make you think a little bit.

  12. I am certain the same thing happens the world over. I remember when I worked back in UK, on a warm day I would buy a sandwich and a magazine and stroll over to the park to relax for an hour out of the office and be on my own. You could almost always guarantee that someone would come and make conversation. Whether it be a guy in a suit chatting you up, or the local drunk/crazy person etc.

Nothing wrong really I suppose, if people are making an effort to be friendly - I always really wanted them to <deleted> off though :o

  13. I love just about everything about this country, there is very little that makes me unhappy here (apart from the continual rain in Samui). I love the drive to work and all the funny things you see that make you smile, I love the way everything is available. The street food, cheap fresh fruit, cheap beer. I also like the way you never quite know whats going to happen and where you might end up of an evening when out with Thai friends.

I like the random conversations I have with Thai's using my limited Thai. And I like the way people stare and marvel when you eat real Thai food and order it in Thai, like you are one of a kind.

Im going to miss Thailand alot :o

  14. I hate hearing how foreigners think Thai's are stupid and/or ignorant but that is all I could think last night.

I do understand - but that one man (probably with low IQ) didnt represent all Thai's did he?

And you can get this kind of behaviour in any country. Look at the boy racers in UK, they are just as bad.

  15. Are you from Sheffield soph. ?

I visit on a regular basis and go to Meadow Hall, park up and get on the trams to the city centre where i spend time walking around the area.

There,s lots of different concessions on all sorts of things for all students, including travel.

It has in my humble opinion got to be one of the best places to be as a student.

So much to do and very modern, clean and green, not like the old foundary days fortunately.

It,s really geared up and you will be in lot,s of great company there, young or not so young.

    One set back i,m afraid..................................................

You,ll have to get used to the late night, early morning entertaiment though, with not having them in Thailand ( if the reports are true. )

If you are not familiar with the area i have relatives who know the place well and if i can be of any aasistance or you need information P.M. anytime, it will be a pleasure to help, no problem.

    marshbags :D:D:D

P.S. good luck from me also and happy times ahead for you.

Cheers Marshbags, thats very kind. I dont really have any friends there (yet!) but my Auntie and family live there so I know the city quite well.

As for the late night early entertainment, well I have sampled a fair bit of the Sheffield all night clubs, so I am quite aware what goes off for fun :o
