  1. I live in Phuket and I have aircon running in the bedroom 24/7 which is where I design on my computer. My thai mother in law uses the aircon only at night in her room and fans in the play room during the day. My aircon bill is usually around 4,000thb. We live in a 7yr off 3 bedroom house if that helps. I would say its probably 2,000-2,500thb just for my aircon to run 24/7 in the bedroom alone.

  2. with 729 aftershocks, this is not an isolated incident, but a brewing catastrophe.

those with the ability to leave the area for a while, shouldnt b thinking this is over.

the sun watchers have predicted an increase in intensity as early as today, before the 5.0,

before anyone mocks this analysis, this can be life saving, and some, believe this is bigger than suggested

stay safe, do not risk your life

I will make sure to take my tinfoil hat as well.

  3. There ca be no certinty in life

I have been eating Thai street food for 2 millenia

Advatages you can choose see the ingredients

Most is cooked in Boiling water (noodles)

or fried in Boiling fat fried rice etc Moo Yang BBQ

Also you if you see locals ofice workers esp who have ltd time and money eating at a bust clean cart a good sign

Also you can see the personal hygiene of the vendor.

Many western outbreaks are from non fresh food

If you have allergies to gluten sugar etc need to be careful and Thai chillis are optional

Say Maame Prik if you prefer without

Vegetarian food removes many of the risks of trichinosis, seafood and fish hazards

The worst food we had and all 4 were vomiting in the restaurant was in much controlled Florida

    Bon Appetit

2 Millenia? I didnt realize we had the oldest man in the universe here. :)

  4. I was not aware Paypal gave you an option not to cover it first.

When I do a Paypal withdrawal is only gives me the option to convert it to THB.

They will calculate it automatically for you. When you transfer the amount, it will show on the next confirmation screen what the exchange will be.

Also if you go under Profile > My Money, it will show available currencies and give you a calculator to see what their rates are for the day. If you want more detailed instructions on how to reach the calculator, its a simple google search.

  5. As mentioned above, Paypal does have their own currency conversion rate. Im guessing the % is similar to the USD. What I find is that the yellow bank allows you to take out 30,000thb from the ATM per transaction. On top of that is $5 ATM fee, and my bank charges a non bank ATM fee of $5, so thats $10 in fees.

After all of those fees I find that with Paypals currency rates its usually about the same give or take $1-2USD. The main consideration here is if you want your money in 1.5-2 days or 5-7 business days. I found that when I transferred from paypal to my Kasikorn account... If I transferred on a Monday I would get it the following Monday. But from USA bank it could be in my account by the following evening depending on the time I transferred.

So in conclusion it really doesn't matter as long as you take out 30,000thb at a time. If you're doing smaller amounts then I recommend just doing transferring into your thai account. I have been doing this for about 3 years now.

    Hope that helps.

  6. One less Russian girl working at Moulin Rouge on Bangla Road. Sure there will be two replacements by weeks end.

I want to give her the benefit of doubt on this one as I do sympathize as I do visa-runs as well but I have a Non-O vias based on marriage and have never crossed the border without a visa in the past 2 years I always fear this might happen to me some time.

BUT! I do wonder if she is a dancer and 1 of 2 russian bars on Bangla, and that could be a nail in the coffin as technically she would be considered taking away a job "reserved for thais".... I would assume.

but joking aside this is all the more reason for me to take my wife now on all my visa runs just in case. And perhaps maybe I need to transfer enough money from my wifes account to mine just incase I need to show at least 20k in the bank.

  7. What I usually do is receive payments via paypal and then send to US account and use the ATM to withdrawl money. With the ATM and Outside the Bank ATM fees it works out to be the same as what you get if you were to send money directly into your thai account because the Currency Exchange rate is much lower than whats posted on www.xe.com

It takes 7 days to process into your Thai account where as it takes 1.5days (I find) to process to my american bank.

The trick is to use the Yellow Bank ATM because you can withdrawl 30,000thb at a time. I just withdrawl the cash then immediately deposit into my thai banks Cash Deposit Machine.

  8. Well done and respect to you FireMedic. You're a brave man. clap2.gif

I hope everyone who reads this in TV shares it on Facebook etc. This really does need to go viral.

Extremely brave! I dont think you would even want to get into a cab after all that arguing. They might take you for a little beating for causing a scene.

  9. It first went up for Mastercard but I now see it applying to Visa as well. Your best bet is a yellow ATM (Krungsri) and take out 30,000. You still pay the 180 but at least against a reasonably large amount. Alternatively walk into a bank and try to get cash over the counter, no charge for that (if they will do it that is).

Yep, I do the same thing with the Yellow ATMs. You can also connect paypal to your thai account but with their currency rate equally about the same as the ATM international fees you also have to wait 5days for the transfer.

  10. 150 baht isnt that bad, what people are forgetting is that prices of basic foods and petrol have doubled in the past few years...if it was 400 I would agree with you but 150, you really need to get upto date on prices in Thaialnd...what did you expect to pay 30 baht???

$5 for 1km? its 1/3 of the price in Bangkok assuming there is no traffic. And traffic in Hua Hin isnt that bad.
