  1. Would go for the Sym over the Honda anyday - Hondas build quality has been slipping for years and as you say Sym looks far better built , much better value and resale values improving all the time as people learn this. Sym can be serviced anywhere ,liquid cooled , fuel injected , simple to work on.

  2. I bet you it is. Also heard some people use the cooling oil from electrical transformers. That is why some blow up ! I love eating from the street vendors , but keep a look-out for an oil drum near the cookers - may tell you what they are using.

  3. Hi Charlie , the YZ will be good but the 2-strokes still have carbs which arent ideal when one rides through such a wide altitude range found in Chiang Mai and surrounding mountains. I guess its not a 4-stroke your after considering your current KX , not to mention you (and i) are from the "smokers" generation. A YZ may not be fully road legal without a "green "book . so will require transporting to the ride areas. Fully road legal enduro bikes are very expensive , although police may have turned a blind eye in the past , they are now (quite rightly) clamping down and even confiscating bikes. Without being fully legal an accident could be costly in many respects. Take your own equipment from England - cheaper and better quality. PS - enjoy CM.

  4. Hi Charlie 1968 Forgot to add , friends call me JEFF - long story !. Nung will be useful , and any other info you can gather on ride-outs. "Duel-sport" bikes are good due to some technical riding in some places but will feel under-powered compared ta a KX. I would recommend an injected bike due to the altitude changes. Kawasaki KLX 250 ?. New =156,000 baht (£3,100).Keep in touch . Sorry for the slow reply , party in Liverpool over weekend , then a few days mountain biking in Ceod y brenin , and yes , it did rain / hail !!!!!!!!!!! JEFF

  5. You will not be insured by either your bike hirer or your accident/medical/holiday insurance company if you arent fully legal - insurance /license / helmet and your sober. Every week we hear of people (normally asking for money to bail them out)who have had an accident when they shouldnt have been riding in the first place.Would you do this in England ?.

  6. Hi Charlie , i have spent a while in Chiang Mai and will be over again in April (will be moving there mid 2015) as im also into enduros / green-laning. If you go to the "Australian Bar" on Loi Kroh road - East side of city , just before the "Iron Bridge" that crosses the Ping river , and ask if Chris Curtis is there (real nice guy from England)- if there is a GP or F1 race , he should be , as they show all sport on some big TV,s and he will direct you to a Thai guy named Nung who lives in Hang Dong and is a superb source of info.He leads some jungle rides on a variety of bikes and is the best mechanic i have seen in Thailand.Whats your story ? reason for moving (from where) bike you will be buying etc.I will be giving Chris and Nung a call soon , so if you have any specific questions then let me know.Hope to see you in April.PS - Make sure you are fully insured and use all the motocross clothing you have for protection , as its expensive to buy in Thailand.

  7. If they have finally sorted out the cam-chain issues and improved the general quality of ALL of the bike it still wont be a patch on the Kawasaki 300 Ninja , which has a much more powerful twin cylinder engine , better brakes and much better adjustable suspension. This is why the Honda cant be more expensive than the current overpriced model. IF this engine is reliable , it will much needed in the sluggish CRF 250 dual sport bike , although it will still need two radiators.

  8. I dont understand why ANY money is required here - from anyone. Surly his accident / medical insurance will cover this (or at the very least his motorbike insurance ) Of course, they wont pay out if he shouldnt have been riding in the first place (drunk or no insurance). What are the FULL details of this latest accident , helmet /speed etc. Hope he gets better - and lets all be careful out there.

  9. HA HA Jingjoke - now there are 2 advantages in buying a bike with a clutch. I wondered if the Suzuki Raider might be more desirable to " thieveing scroats " as they are used for drag/street racing. I always lock my full-face helmet to the front wheel with good lock + chain - (coming from England , where one has to lock up everything !!) I can see an oil cooler on the older models , but they have carbs - new ones must be fuel injection , whether oil or liquid cooled.
