I nominate BABOON, as, apart from being KIM Jong Haircut's representative on earth and the King of The Swingers, he's a nail on the head type of poster and has humour in his arsenal too !

Baboon, clap clap clap Baboon clap clap clap.

PS the noise made by striking the palms of the hand together NOT the other kind !

And I also think some people are confused by the fact that they only get intrusive after you've pretty much settled here.

Unlike our own governments who will know a Thai's underwear size before they're even allowed on the plane.

I can only speak about the British govt and while they may know about someone's underwear before they board the plane they also have a habit of ' mislaying ' new arrivals.

About eighteen months to two years ago the Home Office admitted there was something like 180,000 people who'd arrived on all sorts of visas and they had no idea where they were. Once in the country that seemed to be it more or less and there's little hope of tracing them.

Incidentally the Home Secretary of the day is now PM who had a habit of wriggling out of a mess or two by managing to blame others.

This may reduce the cheap charlie and penniless backpackers who visit.

That would improve the tourist experience for those who can afford it and do spend money here.

    Maybe not a bad idea.

So you want to get the backpackers and budget tourists out,     is it so the   '  quality  '   ones can have Kao San Road and the likes to to themselves   ?

  5. I have to say that in my dealings with Immigration I've never had any problems and on a couple of occasions received help, consideration and the utmost courtesy.

As other members have said sometimes our own personal attitude etc helps or can simply make matters difficult.

Naturally I've heard some horror stories and no doubt some were exaggerated for effect.

Funnily enough the last couple of stories I've head it was the Thai wife who copped it.

One lady apparently deserved it, well according to her husband, and the other was very upset at questions from a female officer who was asking how much money she received from her husband, how much did he give the family and so on.

  6. Another question on the same topic. If on retirement visa and move to a new home, when do I have to tell Immagration. Can I wait until nex schedule 90 day renewal or do I need to it now?

Technically your landlord , if you have one, is supposed to report your occupying a new residence. But some don't adhere to the rules and in most case's that rule is rarely enforced

As far as your reporting a move most Immigration office's tell you to report a change at your next 90 day report. At least that is what most posters here have been told. But how rules are enforced or not enforced is once again dependent upon which Immigration office you report to

Sorry to sound so vague but that is the nature of the beast when dealing with rules and regulations in Thailand

You are correct about things being dependent on who you are dealing with.

I've found this to apply when producing photocopies, especially of a passport, as it's all down to the official, police officer etc who you are dealing with. Some are no problem, some are confused and some like exercising their authority, for a couple of reasons ! rolleyes.gif

  7. Thanks for that not that I want to hear you had a problem but the interest and info factor.

    Bloody sickening isn't it ?

Not long back I was having a beer in my local, I know I'm a bad boy slap wrist, and one of the lads was telling me about his wife who works in some govt office and happily takes money to speed things up etc. He asked her not to do it but she's mai pen rai absolutely convinced it will never backfire because everyone in the office is involved. Trying psychology he suggested if she's caught he'll be deported as no one will believe he wasn't cashing in but it made no difference as the wife thinks she's bomb proof.

Sad reflection on the country and mentality.

  8. Any improvements in education have to be bettered by improving, in fact changing, the attitude of those involved in the profession.

Schools, school directors, teachers etc have a nice little thing going and most definitely oppose change which will affect them, forget the students.

How can changes work if application is left in the hands of the same people with the same attitudes ?

This may apply to some but not all. Would you like to explain what nice little things these people have going and will most definitely oppose any change that will affect them? My wife is a teacher, very well credentialed and she too has asked what you're on about? She also wants to know what position you hold within the education system that enables you to provide such criticism? 30 years of teaching, two university degrees and a lot of compassion for her students. They even ring her after hours and on weekends to get help when they do not understand the lessons. Pretty poor attitude wouldn't you say?

Are you aware that many Thai teachers not only work their required 5 days but also many hours after they go home and for no compensation, so they can provide the best education to their students. Again, a pretty poor attitude wouldn't you say? You'll also find that, out of their own pockets, many teachers provide food, clothing, shoes for the poorer students and also teach them how to socialise and provide behavioural lessons, which many do not receive at home. Again, a very poor attitude.

Since the announcement by the education department, she has been required to attend meetings three days a week, Friday to Sunday, where she is provided details of the additional curriculum that she is required to provide other teachers in her group so they can provide more detailed lessons to their students. She also works into the early hours of the morning, most nights, in order that she gain further knowledge that will enable her to provide the necessary education to her school's students. So yes, given all of the above she has to be one of those whom you seem to think have a poor attitude and do not care for their students. Is that right?

And yes, it will take time but with the dedication of many teachers that I know, it will eventually come to fruition. Unfortunately, the problem is not only with some teachers, not all, but also the parents, many of whom are poorly educated and cannot assist in the education of their own children, unlike many of us westerners, who had parents who could. It seems many forget that education not only relates to schools but at home and amongst one's peers.

I'm not saying all teachers are no good, feathering their own nests etc and it's wonderful your wife is so dedicated.

I taught here for many years including at university level and I know what I saw and heard affecting me, other teachers and students. I'm not going to list examples as anyone with knowledge of the educational system, be it teacher or parent, will have a good idea.

Your wife may well be one of the exceptions to the rule in the profession but is she saying there's absolutely no wrong doing ?

  10. The family (or at least several of them) were obviously in on it too. Not possible for her to have done it 150 (200+)?? times & not be caught in the act. What some people will do to get their 5 minutes of fame. The two who sat there while she lit it..... Duh! Obviously money in it. Were they taking up collections to pay the monks & hermits and keeping most of it, of was it just for fame?

P.S. I am sure one of hose burn marks on a cushion looked like the Virgin Mary! Or was it our lady of Fatima?

Thai Buddhists would be more interested in lottery numbers, I think.

  11. Taught to copy from kindergarten all the way through college. Copying is not unethical in this culture.

I once worked at a rural uni and an Aussie colleague called in a student whose homework assignment had been copied verbatim for a textbook including references to other pages, chapters etc which the idiot student hadn't bothered to edit out.

At first copying was denied but when all the obvious signs were pointed out the student took the high moral ground and asked for credit because he had at least handed in some work and hadn't made a weak excuse for not doing anything.

  12. I think that when you strip away the poor translations, what this is talking about is rebuilding the existing Northern line to Chiang Mai, doubling the track and realigning some curves to allow higher speeds and increase the capacity of the route.

Incidentally, whilst it is a joy to follow the developing relationship between ExPratt and NongKhaiKid, I trust we will be spared the details of any subsequent consummation?

We don't kiss, we don't tell and it could never happen. i believe the charming Ex P is English and I'm a card carrying Scottish Nationalist.

    See U Jimmy !
