You'll need a residency certificate for licence and purchasing a car or motorbike. Getting a yellow book really isn't worth it in Pattaya, life's too short
Well I have first registered and sold cars both in Bangkok and Nonthaburi using my Yellow Book, so above is not quite true.

I tend to agree. I was solo for nearly two decades. Dated a bit. Had a few relationships, but nothing serious. Then, I met my current Thai woman, and after being with her awhile, I realized I had really missed being with a wonderful woman. For me, nothing beats a quiet home, with an outstanding woman who is a great mate, a fun person to be around and always has your back.
Every day with her is a very good day. She is the same lovely woman from one day to the next. She has a smile on her face when she wakes up in the morning. Never experienced that in the states. Some Thais manifest that unbearable lightness of being, that is so delightful to be around. I cannot really get enough of that spirit, and feel so blessed to be around that, and to have found such a well adjusted and delightful creature.
I don't know if it gets any better than that. Sure beats living alone in the desert. For me, anyway.
I agree with all that ...been married to my Aging Asian Babe for 21 years now ... every day is a good day ...even the ones when she is being just a little difficult ....phew

It must be tough for some.
I'm lucky, I've been working offshore on a rotation, got a big family and a few good friends, my children keep me busy on my time off.I see Dan about Thailand's vlogs, he's here with his wife and children but he's trying to get more foreigners living here.
I wish he'd stop, too many foreigners here now.
I'd like to know how many from the west, retire here and become lonely, it can be very unhealthy, sadly I reckon it can be fatal to for some.I think those videos could very well be produced more due to a financial incentive… Anyway when he disposes of his interest in AN he might very well be drowning in cash and cease production….
Thinking about AN I do wonder which ‘Marketing Genius’ decided to change the name from Thaivisa and also its content…….still it remains a happy playground for many and a useful forum for some….

I had a secured CC (100k) with Bangkok Bank for many years … but it was a real pain if I needed to query something.
Two plus years ago now I got an unsecured CC with Citi … 160,000Baht …I just have to pay it off every month. It’s automatically taken from my Bangkok Bank account. They are so easy to talk to and so helpful. They have allowed me a couple of times to temp up the limit. After I’d completed the purchase I just payed it off … got me a load of points though.
I’m retired, no work permit and 77 years old……But seems things are tightening up. I’ve had an account with CIMB for many years …wanted to open another higher interest account … no can do!

My wife is a Thai National but also has British nationality. When we lived in the UK she never worked so was never issued an NI number. Neither does she work here in Thailand but does fill a tax form in every year.
When I am no longer above ground she will receive a quite substantial (UK £32k) widows pension…wonder what will happen in her case. There must be many other expats living here in similar circumstances also a little concerned.

My Benz had nearer 95% or 99% tint on the sunroof, the sun appeared as a dark purple blob..
I always go for 40% reduction all round. My first car here I went with 60 or 80 on the side windows (I can't remember which) and at night time I had to lower the windows to see if the junction was free.
I agree with you on the cheaper films, my MG4 came with free film, and it's rubbish, I can't see it lasting more than a 2-3 years.
Our Benz came without any film … we asked for what they allowed to be put against the price of the car … then chose our own film … but have to admit the car was a bit hot for a few days ………lol

I know this is off topic, but are there my affordable golf clubs, my club in Australia charges 1100 AUD per year and you can play as much as you want you can walk around with golf buggy and don’t have to pay compulsory caddy and motorised cart fee ?
are any of the neighbouring countries any cheaper , want to retire to SEA OR South America with my retirement consisting of playing golf 3-4 times per weeks, at Thailand prices don’t think it’s affordable ?
many thanks
i remember a nice club in phichai district in uttaradit can’t remember the name
MrsJ and myself spend far more on golf than in the UK. We have ‘membership’ well actually it’s a share which we can sell. Up to this year we only had to pay for the caddie but now we also have to pay 100baht as well.
There are several brokers …just google ‘buy golf club membership in Thailand’…. who will buy and sell golf club memberships. About 15/16 years ago we each paid 370,000baht for the share and now I see brokers buy/sell at 350k/400k. We try to play three times a week.
Nearly all golf courses require you to have a caddie.

We settled on Daikin FTKM18SV2S units for our bedroom and the downstairs L-Shaped living room. Quite expensive but they advertised what I thought was a good SEER and as we intended to run them a lot considered that to be quite important.
As it turned out we are running air con almost continually. They do wind down a lot and then use very little electric. It’s more than likely that other brands will perform basically the same of course.
For the L-shaped room we did consider a central unit but in the end decided against due to supporting problems and the fact that it had a much lower SEER.
We have found that less electric is used if we run both air con units togeher, rather than just one. And the one situated near the ‘L’ set half a degree below the other.
Below is some Daikin information. Also electrical usage earlier this morning … set at 25C. The bedroom is about 6M*5M with an attached bathroom which has a slotted door. Also running a fridge/freezer and one fan in another room and of course the inverter.

Our system has been running for one year now. It could be called self-install but I received a huge amount of help from a friend on the tech side (had to endure his insults though) …lol … and a couple of guys to fix the panels on a basically flat South facing roof. In total about 160,000Baht.
So for that …
Sofar Hybrid Inverter 5kWs (HYD5000ES)
LVTOPSUN LV41800 Battery
7*340W Poly cells and 7*450W Mono cells
All switch boxes, cables, cell mounting equipment etc.
If the Solarman data is correct then we generated 5240kWhrs and exported 958kWhrs. When needed we operate on anti-reflux enabled to keep our monthly MEA usage to between 50 and 100kWhrs…could have made it zero! The max generation that we have seen is 4.5kWs.
We have a PHEV that will do IRO 15kms on a charge and if running around that distance with battery empty we would use about 2Ltrs of gasoline. Probably averaged 4-5 battery charges on the PHEV each week.
Between deciding to install solar and installation we replaced the two downstairs 18,000btu air con units with the most efficient Daikin units. This really nullified any before and after comparison as now we run those most of the day whereas before we operated the aircon somewhat more sparingly.
Previously our monthly electric bills ranged from 1600Baht to 3500baht…now its 200-350Baht.
Would we install again …YES as we are both are not so young and just ’need’ more aircon and of course we have the PHEV (4 years now). Would we still go Hybrid, present thinking is probably not as the payback on the battery is huge and of course living where we do power cuts are almost unknown. But we are somewhat future proofed. Am experimenting with DOD at 90%...seems to be ok so far.
Maybe useful information for someone … or maybe not…

I find that the smell/taste totally depends upon the brand… some brands I find quite ok and others not so. I have always assumed that it is the cheaper brands that I find not okay but maybe that is not actually correct.

This association is open to all who are forty five years old and more. They play monthly at different courses around Thailand, but generally not too far away from Bangkok. Normally the price to play is 1500Baht which includes Green Fee, Caddy Fee and a Buggie as well as a meal and awards.
If you don’t have your own transport I understand that you may be able to join with some others in pre-arranged transport.
Awards are the normal, longest drive, nearest the pin plus overall low gross and net, plus low net and runner up in each age category. I believe that there are six age categories plus ladies.
This month there were 140 golfers playing, groups of six people so obviously some tees were loaded twice. Start times tend to be either 8:30 am or lunchtime.
They have a Facebook page called … Thailand Senior Golfers’ Association – TGSA – English Version.
You have to play three times before you are eligible for any age group award. You can make up your own groups, if not enough others will normally be added to make up the six.
Last month they played at Watermill, this month was Khao Cha-Ngok, October is the Royal Thai Air Force course at Patham Thani, November should have been Pinehurst but now changed to Watermill again and December the Royal Thai Army course in Bangkok.
It tends to be a ‘fun day’ and efforts are made to ‘ensure fair play’. MrsJ and myself have played on and off with this group over the last twelve years or so.
You can apply to play either by phone 084-0780724 or info on their FB page.
As an aside, if you want a real challenge go and play Khao Cha-Ngok. Greens are so fast and difficult. On one green I landed in the wrong place and the ball came back to my feet twice!! Mrs J and myself ended up with the highest scores we can ever remember. Many many players scored very high.
If you want accommodation there Pre-Cadet is okay and the accommodation at Watermill is good, both around 1200Baht.

TBH …the best thing that you can do is to book him a course of lessons with a Teaching Pro.
If he has been ‘playing’ for some while 18 holes should not be a problem. My wife, who plays off 18, is still capable of taking a large amount of golf course before the ball and me even more so. Lol.
Don’t worry …if you think you are holding other golfers up …let them through…..

Looking at the comments.... what did I start here?!
Roadrunner is ex uk car trade and so not worried about Jags being high maintenance. Yes a Toyota may be reliable, but who wants one? Driving a Japanese car is a bit like running my nails down a blackboard. Arrrggghhhh!
Nothing has the feel, soul and character of a Jag. Let me enjoy before we are all forced to buy an electric car.
I looks like you are serious ...So ...I happen to know one of the two guys who started the JDC club in Thailand. If you send me your contact details I'll mention what you are looking for to him. Maybe also PM them to Crossy, as I hardly ever read AN now and certainly don't log on...he will pass them on.
MrsJ has a tiny interest in a newley opened Mercedes repair shop ... at present they have a W211 S600 in for repairs ... that is 'kin quick. Seems you are set on a Jag ... the W211 is a great car and not that expensive to maintain ... anyway that is no problem to you ......enjoy

Up here with MrsJ playing the course for a few days … it’s owned by the army and costs a very reasonable 700Baht, green fee and caddy fee. No dual pricing ….
The fairways can be a bit firm in places … it’s no good just hammering the ball down the middle else you can be surprised with water crossing.
Some interesting par 3s. Greens are fast and some have quite deceptive slopes.
Will come and play again.
We stayed D11 Hotel. 700-800Baht. Wanted to stay O U hotel as has a nice swimming pool but fully booked as some university thing on for three days.
Guys … better read this quick just in case …………

Did my annual extension at Nonthaburi last Thursday … arrived there 9:15am and was finished by 10:30am … before that arrived at my bank 8:30am to collect paperwork and then a twenty minute drive to Immigration.
TBH I really don’t find it that much of a hassle … they only asked for one copy of everything …
