Technically correct that you can not get a visa in Thailand, but he can convert.
However, for conversion he needs to show an income of 65,000 a month OR 800,000 in the bank in Thailand OR a combination of yearly income and money in the bank in Thailand.
I am curious about your language here.
If you do a change of status from a 30 day stamp or tourist visa to an O visa at Thai immigration offices as part of the two step process, how is that NOT getting a visa in Thailand? It is restricted to that one purpose (part of the retirement extension application process) but it still gets you a visa that is required for this process.
The conversion "visa" can only be obtained by demonstrating that the requirements for an extension can be met. The "visa" if given is immediately stamped as "used" and costs 2000 bht.

As always misuse of the word "visa" leads to confusion.
You not have a retirement "visa" you have an Extension of Stay" based on retirement.
If your friend wishes to retire in Thailand this can still be achieved from a tourist visa. He will still have to meet the financial requirements of 800,000 in a Thai bank or a provable income of 65,000/month evidenced by a letter from the British Embassy

The OP is dreaming a dream !
The likelihood of that "dream" becoming reality is very limited.
Before burning any bridges he should come to Thailand for 2-3 months and seek his dream job.
If a job search in country succeeds it would be relatively easy for the necessary visa and work permit to be obtained.

150 aud/usd and especially gbp could be several drinks at the bar or even 1 months rent here in los depending on where you stay. But.... The 1 yr extension can always be initiated anytime while visa is valid. But what if you wanted to visit a border country? As you juggle the extension paperwork requirements vs traveling flexibility. The last thing you want to think about is "I should have just gotten the multiple entry the first time." Knew a younger couple who did something similar (single entry, but had option for multiple), but they didnt do it because they were told it was "so easy" to just extend in country; so he figured he'd save the $130 or so. After the fact, he saw the wisdom in having the multiple entry. He was a little different as it was his first time in LoS and was planning a long stay of a 1-3 years vs a more permanent relocation. He spent way more than $150 + time getting the required docs/funds together to do 1yr extension. Not fun. I do not recommend to anyone intending a long stay without prior experience with the 1yr extension process or the proper connections to get only single entry non-imm, IF they have the option for the multiple like OP does. Despite your gloomy and uninformed view a "extension of stay" is easily obtained and a re-entry permit provides all the "flexibility" one could wish for if visiting other countries is desired.
An extension of stay costs 1900 bht plus the cost of a few photocopies and a passport photograph. A re-entry permit costs 1000bht for a single re-entry.

Perhaps next time you seek information, ask politely, as opposed to accusing someone of distorting truth. A much more civil method...do you disagree?
I note , with great civility, a failure to post a valid link that confirms Marinol is a medication licensed for the treatment of "back pain"
I also note a failure to confirm that this medication was legally imported into Thailand !
Happy New Year "Sir"

Tramadol cannot be sold OTC any more.
This has been the case for about 3-6 months now.
Some pharmacies don't care and still sell old stock. Others will sell it OTC and keep a record of your passport number. Most will not sell it.
Strange !
I bought some just last week without any difficulty.

Best do approx 28 days before the visa expires.
You will then have time should immigration require additional information/ paperwork.

Why not combine Siam Reap with the visa run?
The OP needs a new visa "Siam Reap" would not be a good place to obtain a Thai via !

Are you fully protected against Tetanus ? If not get a booster.
Regarding the wounds /-----------increasing pain, swelling or redness should prompt you to seek medical advise.

This proves that the police are doing a good job.
What I would do in that situation is cooperate with the police rather than telling them no pee and to pee off and refuse.
Providing you abide by the laws then you have nothing to fear. Get caught with drugs, dealing or taking, then you`re owned, it`s that simple.
The jail houses here are stacked wall to wall with farang inhabitants incarcerated for drug offenses, many serving life sentences.
The jails filled with falang on drug sentences does nothing to validate your position. And there is nothing "simple" about being "owned" because of a failed test.
Have you heard of the pharmaceutical Marinol taken for pain? I'm not smoking pot, I'm taking a pill prescribed by a medical doctor...but that pill will show up as pot in my blood and even with a prescription, the laws of Thailand could find me guilty of using a "drug" that's on their banned list. So you see, it's not really that "simple" at all.
And please refrain from "then stay out of Thailand" comments. Half my family lives, works / holds office and contributes positively to Thailand.. ..as have I for better than 50 trips in 25 years. I don't drink or engage in nefarious activity. I conduct myself as a gentleman and add to Thailand's economy.. but I take a prescribed pill that could land me in jail. I don't think there's anything simple about it and your dismissive attitude suggests something simple about you.
Marinol
Treats or prevents nausea and vomiting caused by cancer medicines, when other medicines do not work. Also used to increase the appetite of people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Claiming this medication is for "pain" is likely a distortion of the truth.
If this medication is indeed prescribed and legally imported to Thailand
http://www.thaiconsulate.se/img/document/GuidanceForTravelers.pdf
It is very unlikely that a problem in its legal use would be encountered.
Those who choose not to adhere to this advise put themselves at risk.
I appreciate the link. The definition of a medication I've used for over 10 years? not as much.
And just who are you calling a liar...me or my doctor? I have back pain, he prescribes the Marinol for that pain and has practiced medicine for over 30 years.
Instead of getting the knickers in a twist why not just post a professional link/information which indicates that medication is used for "back pain" ? By doing that I would be grateful as my knowledge would be improved
Unless you have indeed got specific permission to import that medication by possessing / using you are in violation of Thai law.

Non-Immigrant O VISA's come in two flavours !
A single entry visa provides a 90 day stay.
A multiple entry visa provides as many 90 day entries as are required over a 12 month period . Used correctly the visa will last for about 15 months
NB please not that multiple entry visas seem to be becoming difficult to obtain in some places

Brilliant idea !
Unfortunately it will not work !
You must have the Laos entry/exit stamps before you will be allowed back into Thailand

Don't do drugs.
Like it not pot is considered a drug in Thailand.
So deal with it, druggie,
if you can't stay off the pot for a couple of weeks to pass a urine test, that's your funeral.
No sympathy here.
No need to be so judgemental, I did ask how long I should refrain from it.
I will 100% make sure I have nothing in my system before arriving simply as a precaution, but I want to make sure my friends are OK too and pass on any helpful info I can gather here.
Here read it and enjoy !
http://www.thailawforum.com/tourst-guide-laws-Thailand-4.html
NB --------The "urine" test is used as a screening tool.
A positive test (it WILL detect cannabis use) will result in arrest and detention whilst specimens are subject to more advanced laboratory analysis.
Cannabis use can be detected for up to 30 days post use.
You have been warned !

Do you have a multi entry visa or do you have and extension of stay with a re-entry permit ?
If you have a visa that will give a 90 day entry with no requirement for any "reports" to immigration because you would have to leave the country on or before the 90 days ended.
An extension of stay requires a 90 day report to be made for every 90 days spent in the Kingdom. If this is what you have a report will be due 90 days after your arrival.
Check your passport to ascertain Exactly what you have.
-
Not sure about the concept of "entitlement" !
Immigration will accept 90 day reports 15 days prior and up to 7 days after the due date

This is direct from the Thai Embassy Web Site in Canberra:
Australian passport holders (and nationals from 50 designated countries) may travel to Thailand for the purpose of tourism without a visa. They will be permitted to stay for a period not exceed 30 days on each visit provided they arrive by air and have a confirmed ticket out of Thailand (by air, land, or sea) within 30 days. But those entering by land at the immigration checkpoints from neighboring countries, will be allowed to stay for 15 days on each entry.
This is for a "visa on arrival", and you DO need a confirmed ticket out of Thailand. The fact that Immigration may not normally ask to see your confirmed ticket out of Thailand, they can and if you don't have one you can be refused entry.
The airline (who may be fined or have to fly you back out of Thailand) has every right to check that you have a confirmed ticket out. When you check in they review your reservation, and if you have a return ticket with them they will say nothing. If you don't they can demand to see your confirmed ticket out with another airline and refuse to check you in if you dont. This has happened to me checking in flying Thai, Singapore, Qantas and Cathay.
I recommend you get a confirmed ticket out to Malaysia, Singapore etc before you go to check in.
The fact that many posters "get away with it" does not mean that everyone will.
There are NO "visas on arrival" available for Australians only visa exempt entries.
Using incorrect terminology leads only to confusion and misunderstanding !.
As sea and land departures cannot be easily checked by the airlines these will likely be rejected as confirmation of onward/return ticketing arrangements.

'3- Immigration officers / dept of Labor officers have room for assessing whether the foreigner's activity constitutes work or not (you might guess the outcome).'
I was told last year when renewing my marriage visa that I did not need a work permit , by immigration , to sign company documents ...
One assumes you got that advice written down , signed by an immigration officer and sealed with a official stamp ?
Thought not !

Thanks Joe.
I hope your friend is not Thai.

What is that supposed to mean ?
It could mean that illegal activity is rapidly reported to the authorities resulting in arrest, detention, court appearance, big fine + possible jail time. Followed by deportation.
Are you bored or just a Troll ?

The OP asked a question. He received answers which do not, it would seem, meet expectations

As said you are working illegally.
Be careful where and who you talk to about this illegal activity or your New Year could become a world of distress .

Wayned, your reply is the easiest way to achieve my goal. We have a copy of her house card, and our marriage certificate from the USA. Will these be accepted?
Sceptic11, your reply is definite that I need to leave and reenter. Have you considered that my wife is Thai?
Did your wife enter Thailand on a Thai passport ?
If not she will also have to consider her " visa" status.
-
You do not have a "visa" I suspect you were given a 30 day visa exempt entry. This can only be extended by 7 days.
You MUST leave Thailand and obtain a Tourist visa from a Thai consulate in a nearby country.
Or do as is suggested above.
-
What if I bought a ticket to say Malaysia exiting Thailand after my first 60 day entry period was over.
Would that help things?
I could kill two birds with one stone and do my border run.
Entirely up to you.
The extra ticket is not required in order for you to fly to Thailand.
See the above posts.
Do not forget you can apply for a 30 day extension for each 60 day entry.

As a younger man I traveled widely to many countries , using a variety of airlines.
Frequently my journeys were made on one way tickets.
Only occasionally have I been challenged at check in . A quiet discussion with a supervisor has always resulted in my being boarded![:) smile.png](//forum.thaivisa.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png)
