  1. I was planning to swing by the Department of Land Transport but realized they are probably closed as today is a Holiday. I wanted to have this confirmed and went to their website but could not find their Holiday schedule. This seems like one of the first things I would put on a website, but I absolutely cannot find it anywhere. It's probably too late now anyway, but for future reference, does anyone have their official holiday schedule?

  2. It's real simple. You know converting from Islam is illegal. If you convert from Islam, you know you're breaking the law. As a result, you have zero rights when you get caught.

    No sympathy from me.

Point is that the statement is only going to work in so far as the law is just.

Also, knowing in advance that the breaking of an unjust law brings with it the death penalty, doesn't entail that the person so breaking it deserves to die. Stupid perhaps, but deserving to die I don't think so. There would be no population pressure anywhere in the world if stupidity had that consequence.

Drunk drivers cause far more deaths, but there's no clamor to have those law breakers put to death. Perhaps we should?

They are drug dealers who got caught, tried and convicted

Before they were caught how many lives did the drugs they smuggled / sold ruin?

    No sympathy from me either

If a countries law stated the death penalty for a drunk driver who causes death I would not argue

nor would I be sympathetic, as I feel drunk driving is one of the stupidest things a person can do

So consequently you have no sympathy for criminals in Islamic countries who get their arms amputated for stealing?

  3. This is bad news. Much of the most interesting wildlife comes out after sun down, but then I guess they can't stop you from going back to the beginning of the route or driving at a snail's pace.

It is bad news unless you are happier to have a one to one confrontation with a hungry tusker in the dark.Hope you have a strong car and a stronger set of bowels.

I actually prefer to ride a motorbike. Give the elephants enough space and you won't have any problems. On a motorbike, you even have the option of making a swift u-turn if things get dicey.

You can always stay in the park accommodation.

Last time I brought my own tent, which worked fine, except I woke up with a bunch of leeches attached to my legs the next morning. Problem is, the gates inside the park also come down at some point (before midnight) - at least some of them - so you can't just drive around freely just because you don't plan on exiting the park.

  5. Whilst I happy for those who have children and have and still enjoy the experience, I would like to redress the balance. I have never regretted not having children. In fact I am happy being an uncle and God father etc. Having my own, has never been a priority. I believe some people should not be parents and feel sorry for those that should and can't have children. The world is overly populated, so having children should be a very careful decision, as I firmly believe that having children, you should give 100% towards their development for the rest of their lives.

So the answer is no regrets at all.

no regrets from 'laughing gravy' because he has no idea what he's missing out on. ha ha

Right, because everyone loves to be a parent. Just ask all those absent fathers (there's got to be a few million in Thailand) who apparently are very excited about their parenthood.

  6. This whole affair fell into oblivion after a few days as I figured I was being unduly suspicious, so I never ended up checking or formatting the phone. Today, however, something weird happened. I was going to call a friend but noticed as soon as I put the phone to my ear that the stupid song that normally plays every time I call said friend had now turned into a ringback tone. When the call went through, it was my girlfriend on the other end.

I know I dialed the correct number. I dialed it manually, and according to my log, I had called both my friend and my girlfriend, albeit 2 minutes apart. It may just be a bug of some kind, but knowing very little about these things, I am speculating whether it might have been some sort of spy application that malfunctioned and, instead of alerting my girlfriend to the call I was making, rerouted my call to her altogether. Maybe someone is aware of this specific problem as it pertains to the Samsung Galaxy Core 2?

  7. Drugs ruin lives.

It is the people who take certain drugs that sometimes ruin their own lives. That is, if you subscribe to any notion of free will, which is part of what Indonesia's judicial system would have to be based on. And the practice of lumping in ecstasy with drugs like heroin and crack, which most countries seem to be guilty of, is not based on relevant research.

  8. I would hate not having a clue what people around me are talking about, not being able to read simple signs, especially traffic signs. Most of the street food stands in my area have menus in Thai only, and not being able to read them would definitely be a handicap.

It is hard for me to relate to any long term resident who does not care enough to learn Thai. Of course, if I did not find Thai language interesting and exciting to learn, the purely practical reasons for doing so probably wouldn't be enough to make me do it.

  9. True seems to be the way to go. Does anyone know where I can buy a satellite dish in or near the Phra Khanong district? I have tried contacting them, but as expected, I am getting no response.

If you can't even contact them to start service what are you going to do if you have service problems ?

Or are you going to come back here in a couple of months complaining about the lousy service you are getting from Truevisions ?

    Yes.

  11. From Thai Consulate, take tuk-tuk to Savanakhet bus station, ask for cross-border bus to Mukdahan bus station where you will find umpteen buses to Bkk and everywhere else. One deluxe bus is Sahaphan -- their office is not in the main mukdahan bus station building, but about 20 metres across thecarpark. Ask around -- the tuktuk drivers know everything. Last departure for Bkk is around 21:00.

FWIW -- there is a guest house near the consulate called NONG SODA -- all the tuk tuk drivers know it and it's 5 minutes walk from the consulate. -- past a couple of places you can get food -- including the floating restaurant on the river.

    Enjoy Savanakhet -- I did wink.png

Wow, I just posted how relieved I was that Nong Soda is close to the consulate since that is where I am finding myself, and then I saw jpinx's post. I wonder how far I am from the consulate now.

  12. I am looking for some options on how to get back to Bangkok from Savannakhet. I wouldn't mind flying but am looking to save some money, so if I can catch a reasonably comfortable bus somewhere, I don't mind. Directions from the Thai consulate would be a bonus.

If I fly, is there a chance of getting my hands on a cheap stand-by ticket?

PS, if you are wondering how I got here, I was pushed out of a C-130. Just kidding. I'm not actually there yet but have a one way airline ticket.

  13. Thanks for the advice, folks. I am not paranoid. In fact, I think she is probably not trying to spy on me, but I can't be certain without verifying. We have been together for 2-1/2 years, and I know her fairly well, but a lot of people have lived with and completely trusted their partner for far longer than that and then found out they have been betrayed. That is not news to anyone here. Not that I think tracking me is really a betrayal.
