One of my surprises in Thailand is how well maintained are most older cars... and some...are keeping its value very well..... If interested...my neighbor is selling his 1994 Volvo 960 and his 1992 MB 280 in pristine and showroom condition.

It is common practice between good neighbors, and kind of Thai custom. Most real estate and cars are sold like that....that is why good deals are not always advertised. By the way...those care now are sold, for TH 90.0000 each to a classic car dealer selling to foreigners. Now posted on the internet for double that price. I have a Land Rover Defender 1967, totally original. Accepting offers.

All depends. If a Thai woman move to Western countries at young age, married or not with a farang, usually they adjust very well to the new customs, learning the language very fast too. Over 30s...will be other history

Last week at the local expat meeting I had the information that Chinese companies are buying and renting land and planting banana for export. In most tropical countries banana plantations needs control from local authorities to avoid environmental damage. Banana grows spontaneously invading and destroying other crops, and it is very difficult, if not impossible. to eradicate, specially when invading mountain areas.The mountain areas heading to Pushifa are becoming a nice coffee plantation community, and may be affected in the future. Already some areas are having problems with water diverted to the banana plantations. I do not know if the Chiang Rai Government is aware of the situation.

I beg to differ about the education or world traveler thing. Just last night we piled in the big Everest to go and eat seafood by the seashore, brother in law, sister in law, their three kids ages 3, 6, and 7, my wife, and the mother in law. Now all but mom and children are graduate holders of master's degrees, my wife has travelled over seas on numerous occasions, and sister in law did her masters in Australia. I digress, before having children the SL was quite soft spoken like my wife, but I'll tell you what last night for the 30 minutes drive to and from the restaurant, I was treated to the most grating cacophony of noise I can remember in recent history. Mom, wife and SL yapping away about this and that food and what the kids will and won't eat all the while kids doing what they do. My sweet mild soft spoken wife wasn't nearly the Match for mom and SL, but she was getting a few chops in of her own.

I am left to consider this, could being a mother have something to do with it? Dad just drove the car while I sat in the front seat, both of us in silence.

One further point, they are from the south of Thailand and I find southern Thai to be especially annoying.

College, University, or superior education is not what I was referring to. Family education is what matter most, in any culture and country, not always related with school. Particularly, I think that when an Asian women is "educated" is absolutely delightful to the senses in every way and occasion

For the last 50 years the US propaganda were saying that life in Cuba is so bad that most Cubans wanted to leave at any cost, and the Cuban Government was blocking Its citizens to leave the country.
That was just a big lie! I have many Cuban friends studying in Europe.
Like in any other country Cubans have to apply for visas and show travel reservations and proof of income. Many are traveling to Europa and other countries, but was not easy or impossible to get visa to the US. Why? Because many Cubans were applying for "refugee" status getting very good US Government Benefits.... and some getting illegal "jobs" to supplement it. In Cuba drugs dealing and prostitution it is a serious crime.
Now....when diplomatic relations are getting normalized, those future "refugees" knows that very soon will not get that kind of "welcome" from the US Government anymore. No free money, no free housing, no easy jobs...nothing. Now they are showing the real reason why they were risking their lives to reach the US. In Cuba is not welfare, unemployment, Section 8, food stamps, etc, etc, but there are free good education, good health services, housing, to the ones willing to accept jobs available to anyone, and to work. Now, no options anymore for a free ride in the US.
And...the Havana Airport still showing a large banner to its visitors...
"IN CUBA NO CHILDREN ARE SLEEPING ON THE STREETS"

Many "all you can eat" places have a policy... At the time of the bill, any food left in plates will get a charge "a la carte"..and it is not cheap, like the Andaman Sea Food Buffet in Chaing Mai.

Probably this place..or the Chinese.... learned a lesson. Anyway was disgusting behavior.

For many people Thailand is Pattaya.....and the USA is Las Vegas...

For others..Thailand is Chiang Rai...and the USA is San Diego.

Given the circumstances, they did all the rights things and kudos to the Navy for rescuing them. I don't suppose Thailand has anything like the RNLI in the UK.

Charts and proper equipment aboard are required. His error was not reading the charts, and going on luck. Depths and obstructions (large rocks) would be on the chart. Tide schedules are also critical, if sailing by your britches. He would still have his boat, if he took precautions.

He had the equipment...but failed to read his chart....which I have often neglected to do (and paid the price in keel damages).

Cost him an expensive yacht....a pretty grievous error.

A scary situation, sure..An expensive loss I doubt. Yacht insurance usually covers a lot more that the sale price if it is an older one. Only if was a new one. but I doubt too. A new boat may have GPS and radar on board......
