  1. Although thai chinese is less than 20%, they are the main drivers of thai economy. Quite true. Maybe that's why thai people generally like chinese people.

Well, if we take a look back at recent Thai history, we find that the Chinese were in fact heavily and openly discriminated against for many decades.

I think the fact that many Thais appreciate Chinese culture now is most driven by the Chinese having fought and struggled for their respect. When a small minority essentially takes over your entire country, it's hard to deny that the minority group is onto something. :-)

That's how respect often works in human relationships. It is rarely given freely and usually must be earned/forced.

Traditionally, china has influenced many southeast asian countries to a large cultural extent, that's why chinese people can succeed in these places. On the other hand, americans or europeans will be at a disadvantage. Even yingluck herself is also thai chinese. The original thai people is dark skinned.

  2. Initially on 'ok terms'

No, I don't think 'ok terms' is enough for you to go chasing after someone.

Having said that, you probably will anyway ;)

I know clearly I can never marry her. I wrote a letter which I hope to pass to her personally.

  3. Never think you are superior to the locals just because you come from a rich country. That's a big mistake and often one that leads to conflicts between you and locals. I dont travel thousands of km to thailand just to bully thai people. I enjoy their service, they also enjoy my patronage. A win-win situation.

Actually I generally find the poorer people the warmest, friendliest and most genuine people whichever country I visit.Isaan people in Thailand being a prime example of this.smile.png

    Hi there.

I haven't met isaan people yet but I'm sure almost all thai people are also friendly. Whe I was at a bangkok hotel, the waitress took the initiative to talk to me even though I was a customer but wearing somewhat casual.

  4. I learn thai coz of someone I once loved.

I learnt a few words of Thai to ask her out ... for the same reason.

Took me forever from the Video

That wasn't it, but you get the idea.

Plus she was easy to watch ...

I actually wrote her a letter in thai, all my true feelings inside, but never had the chance to pass it to her. I tried my best, flew and drove and ran, perhaps heaven's fate.

  5. So far after 395 posts, it seems that, people who learned Thai, are happy with it, people who didn't, doesn't seems to be unhappy with it.

I'm happy to learn thai and talk to them in their language. Kinda fun and interesting. I think asians find it easier to learn thai due to some similarities and more difficult for farangs coz you have to roll your tongue.

...you might just be too nicer person for this forum...clap2.gif

Haha I can be evil person as well !

The reason for saying this is because I observe many farangs getting into trouble with thai people. Just like why asians seldom get robbed while farangs often get targeted. Similarly, my cousin went to paris months ago and 1st day was already robbed. Once you don't know how things work there, you contrast yourself with others hence making u an easy target for crimes.

  8. The importance of learning a new language is not dependant on whether or not that language is of economic significance. We should respect all languages in the world. If you're in china, learn mandarin. If you're in thailand, learn thai. Simple as that.

Or, if I may add, just speak English, so much easier, I learnt English from birth, so not hard for me.

But all of you multi-linguists can make us feel inferior if it makes you happy, us older folk don't really give a toss, we'll never master the Thai language now, it's too late for our shrivelled up grey matter to absorb such information. I could say more but it's tiresome now......to the bar, "Leo, Krap!" Kob Kuhn Krap.

Hi there. It's not my desire to make you feel inferior. I feel that it's amazing that this world has so many languages.

  9. My brother has been working in thailand for 2 years but he only speaks but not writes or read thai. I think foreigners can start by speaking first then slowly proceed to writing and reading. My chinese language is actually more difficult than thai !

I think reading should be learned from the get go if you want Thai people to understand you and it also makes self study a lot easier. The transliteration is really more of an obstacle than an aid.

Saying is only 50%, eventually in the long term u still have to write and read. Foreigners face the same problem when learning chinese. They all die at the writing part. Even I as a chinese sometimes also forget certain words because I seldom use them.

  10. yingluck is elected by the people, not suthep, thus he is in no position to give the ultimatum to yingluck and she need not bother about him actually.

Was Yingluck elected ?????? I have an idea she was placed there.

well I can also say that Abhisit was elected OUT, hence Yingluck was elected IN. Whatever it is, it's still a fact that Yingluck government was elected through elections.
