  1. I was pulled over for speeding recently, but they ( the traffic police) couldn't tell me what speed I was actually doing. So I asked what the limit was. 120kph on expressways and 110 kph on country roads. So even the BiB don't know the limits. TiT.

300baht on the spot fine. Worth it !

I was stopped recently on highway 7 Bangkok , bib wanted 500 for speeding , I was doing 90 where max was 120 but he didn't have a clue what my speed was as he was stood at roadside with no camera !

I politely refused to pay and told him I was not speeding so he said why was I in lane 3 ( of 4 ) so I said because I was overtaking , he then told my Thai wife I have to pay money because I should overtake on inside lane !

After about 5 minutes of my smiling and polite refusal to pay he sent me on my way and told my wife I need to learn Thai driving rules !

  2. There are very many very intelligent Thais , I think the problem is they don't want the majority to be well educated so the elite upper class can continue to be corrupt and control thus protecting their own wealth, you only have to look at some of the comments made about issan people during recent protests. I have a friend teaching English in a public school out here and the average class size is about 60 pupils , compare that to a private school class size.

you and your "its the elites fault" group are really pushing shit up hill with this crap. The ones that want the north kept uneducated are thaksin and his cronies so that they can control them, if they get eduction then they will realize they are being lied to and will no longer back the ptp/thaksin. The only way you can keep corruption going is by keeping the people dumb and that is exactly what the ptp are now doing. The elites have nothing to do with it, they are not in govt, the ptp/thaksin are, they are the ones that need to be ridiculed over this, using this for your personal bias and putting it before whats best for the people of Thailand is pretty pathetic really but typical of a thaksin lover.

I think you obviously have very strong political views unlike myself. To be totally honest with you I have no political interest in any Thai party or in my home country as I believe that nearly all politicians are corrupt which ever country they serve in.

On that note I would like to end this discussion with you as you've obviously got an attitude problem

  4. There is a lot of post collecting going on????? But I would be really intersted in one thing: Until now I thought you can only get a 14 or 15 days extention on a touriist visa????? Could some sensible people clarify this one!!!!!

    Hi wernerkl

Not sure if you mean extension or re entry into Thailand.

If you mean entry into Thailand the rules changed on the first of November and now members of g7 countries get 30 days at land crossings instead of the old 15

  5. I would recommend spending A few days il Laos,or other countries around Thailand. It would be good just to get more educated.

Thanks thrilled but I've already been to more counties than I can remember to mention but now I plan to retire here in Thailand and as I'm still relatively young will need to be a bit more careful with the finances , also there's still a lot of places here I haven't visited so going across the border is only done out of nesessity

  6. You can get a 2 entry in Vientiane. Since you probably got your 3 entries in your home country you will not have a problem in Vientiane.

Have you been getting 30 day extensions for your 60 day entries? You can get almost 9 months out of a 3 entry if you do the last entry just before your visa expires.

    Hello joe

No I haven't had the 30 day extension because it sounded a bit expensive although I can't remember what the price was and also I think I would have run out of time before activating the 3rd visa.

I know that I can get a free 30 day visa ( but still have to pay the 35 dollars for the Laos visa ) but not sure if I would have problems if I kept going over the bridge every month

  7. At the moment I am here on a triple entry tourist visa acquired in Hull.

I am living in Nong khai and go across the bridge on my bicycle pay 35 dollars get my passport stamped and cycle back , so far no problems. When I go again in December it will be my final visa so in February I will have to go to Thai consulate in Vientiane , this could be where my problems begin !

A couple of questions here can I get a triple entry visa again like I did in Hull ? ( this was my second triple entry in 12 months )

Or is it possible to get an o visa ?

I am not married to a Thai and only 48 years old so not sure how or if I can continue living here ?

    Any advice welcome

  8. I've been here on hols a few times and always been a passenger on public transport and it scared the s**t out of me !

Now I'm living here and have got Thai licence for car and bike as I also had in uk.

Let's no get any false illusions here about defensive riding/driving I have ( in my opinion ) a great deal of road sense and have raced bikes in uk so I'm used to speed and reading the road ahead but here you can forget all that logic ! Yes it helps a lot but you just can't anticipate vehicles changing lanes without indicating ( or they're not working ) for no apparent reason when you're overtaking on a dual carriageway , the changes in road surface etc !

I choose to drive because I feel safer when I'm in control and actually enjoy driving/riding but let's not compare it to almost anywhere else , it's damn dangerous regardless of how good you can drive/ride

  9. Hello jack

You're very right about all things you say about sawai !

I have caught them on sweet corn , sticky rice , bread paste , lam paste , fish balls , free lined floating bread , long range feeder and in the margins on the float , virtually you name it I've tried it !

To begin with I found it to be good fishing and enjoyable catching sawai between 3 and 9 kg almost every cast but now I'm trying to target cahor or smaller carp.

I was beginning to doubt there was any other species in there but I have seen a Thai catch 2 cahor in 2 consecutive days and a few other Thais catching smaller carp around the 1-2 kg size.

When I read about v.s I think it says there are 7 different spiecies in there but it seems 6 of them don't want to know me !

As I say it is good fishing and you can fish very light tackle because most of the time you have the lake to yourself and there's no snags but now I want to catch to the cahor or anything else !

  10. After reading all the responses I think we're all missing the root cause , there is no right or wrong but only greed and lack of self respect ( both from client and customer )

The west has a lot to answer for because we all want to keep up with the Jonsies and are obsessed by wealth

And come to Thailand and spend surpluss money on sexual entertainment .

Thais see all this money and want much of the same , problem is most people ( both Thai and ferrang ) don't find real happiness , as in most countries money and supposed better lifestyle rarely improve real happiness only more competition for who has the best

  13. Hello everyone

Has any of you fished above lake before ?

It is my local lake and having fished it 4 times now all I keep catching are pla sawai , I'm not complaining as its only 80 baht for the day and most of the time I have the lake to myself or maybe a couple of local Thais .

I've fished it between 2 and 6 p.m and had fish between 5 and 20 lb almost every cast but can't get anything else . It doesn't seem to matter what bait I use sticky rice , bread , sweet corn or fish balls . I've been told there are cahor to about 50 kg in there but can't get through the cats , has anyone got any tips or experience here please

    Thanks

  14. Hi all

I have been to Hull twice now for a triple entry tourist visa , the last time was in August this year and both times I just turned up with passport and photographs and left with my triple entry visa within 20 mins , no appointments made !

Not quite sure what other poster is saying about no multiple entry tourist visa ?

    All I know is the maximum you can get is a triple entry and if I remember correct it's £25 for each visa plus a £10 admin fee I.e triple entry = 3 x 25 + 10 = £85

  15. I always go by Jet Air India for about 29,000 baht - they have a main baggage allowance of 30Kg. This is to Heathrow however, so not sure about Manchester or Birmingham.

Another advantage is that that you do not spend much time waiting around in the transitory airports of Mumbai and Delhi.

Jet air ok for you? I have heard some pretty poor reports so have avoided them.

I guess if they are fairly punctual, dont lose luggage too often, have reasonable food and movies, and stopovers are not too long, that's good enough!

I've never had problems with jet , the food is not so good as other airlines but other than that I don't find that much difference between them ,etihad,Eva,emirates etc when traveling in economy class so I always take cheapest flight with decent layover times

  16. After my first year I must return for as shorter holiday as possible to check in on the folks, friends etc...

But what I am seeing is disproportionately high flight prices from BKK to UK. I always used to fly from Birmingham or Manchester with Emirates to Bangkok (not because I'm posh but simply they were one of the most cost effective operators to get me here), but looking to do the thing in reverse and it seems that they are asking 55,000 baht up??? HELP I was thinking it would be more around the 30,000 baht mark.

I have one lead which is Jet Airways that I am exploring but does anyone have any tips for the cheapest way to get back to either B'ham or M'chester?

    Thanks.

Try kayak.com it will show you prices and times to and from all airports.

When I brought my girlfriend to the uk in march from bkk I found it cheaper to get one way tickets ( about £340 each way )

That also made it easier as was not sure when my work would finish so we could return here together.

I don't know why but a return flight was a lot more expensive from bkk compared to return from heathrow ?

If dates are not critical try each day ie mon - sun as prices can vary a lot

  17. Hello everyone , I'm new to this forum And don't know how to upload pics from my iPad to forum can anyone help please !

I also posted in the issan forum asking for advice about fishing in and around Nong khai but have had no replies , I'm not sure if I'm using this forum correct , can anyone help please !

It's very simple to upload pictures, when you post look at the bottom right hand corner, you will see 4 ions, the second in from the left should take you to your photo album, select a picture, it will then say why size, click on best size and post, that's how I do it.
Thanks for that dogpoo ! I've had a look but can't see any icons , I think maybe it's because I'm using an iPad

I've been reading some of your posts and it seems your very knowledgeable about fishing in Thailand and as I'm new over here I don't suppose you've got any tips on fishing the meekong in Nong khai , I'm not expecting monsters but would be nice if I can catch fish 5kg up !

Hi mate, I also use the IPad, google Thai visa connect and try to download the application again, there is no reason why you can't upload pictures the same as me, sorry I can't help you with fishing the Mekong river, I am guessing catching anything of any size would be difficult! is it fast flowing or is it fairly still, if it's fast flowing you would have to look for calm eddies, these are the places where fish will gather waiting for food, fishing in fast moving water is very difficult involving heavy weights, best if luck.

Hello m8 , thanks for your help again , hopefully I've just posted a pic of a small cat from v.s fisheries in Nong khai !

As for the meekong it's still flowing fairly quick but has already dropped about 3 meters in 2 weeks , flowing water doesn't worry me as I fished mainly rivers in the uk including a lot of boat fishing in the river Humber ! I think when I fish the meekong it will be trial and error ! I've only seen locals fishing close in with very light tackle catching odd very small fish

  19. The average Thai does not go abroad, they cannot afford to and they have little concept of the country's economy, they would not have any idea that is was slowing down. Take one day at a time, can we pay the bills and eat.

Tell that to my gf the tourguide who takes average Thais on trips to vietnam / china / singapore ect. There are the dead poor and there are people who can afford it and then you got the rich who usually go on non guided trips.
robblok I think your spot on about the different financial levels of Thais , as in many countries some people earn money and waste it then moan they're poor others work hard for little money and manage to save and occasionally treat themselves.

You only have to look at all the big new cars on the roads to see Thais have money , many people in the uk can't afford large new cars ! And yes I know the cars are on credit but that's the same in western countries

  20. I think the main thing here is horses for courses ! I myself like float fishing which generally requires a longer rod which is not as strong as a stumpy stick but if balanced with correct reel and line can land good size fish while still giving good sport as long as theres not to many snags.

If your expecting fish of 20 kg + then yes more substantial gear is required but still needs to be balanced as there's no fun in just winding something straight in.

As previously mentioned the shimano exage travel range are great quality , I have 2 which I brought with me from the uk.

One is the 20-30 boat road which is used with a multiplier for the bigger fish the other is a sea spinning rod which can be used for float fishing , model is TEXAXS3033H.

I have not tried other travel rods so can't comment on them but the multi piece rods are far better than telescopic rods I've tried in my opinion
