  1. OMG!

    Fibre is here!

The men arrived at 11:00 am and were gone by 11:45.

It was a very neat job.

They used the  3BB fibre router that I described in a post above.

There was no extra fee. I paid only 800 THB for this installation and router; paid at the 3BB shop.

They left us with these speeds - see images below.

The top one is my office desktop, 10 metres from my new dual-band AC1900 wireless router, and through two unavoidable walls. It is connected to the 2.4 Ghz network of the router.

The lower one is my phone , close to my AC1900 router, connected to the 5GHz network of the router.

I'm extremely happy with the speed.

I just did a test, downloading 35GB of data from the internet.

It took 30 minutes, with an average download speed of 7 megabytes per second.

How could I not be happy with that!

  2. @stupidfarang and everyone..............

tl;dr   it's worth getting a new router to maximise your internet speed!

While I'm waiting for the fibre to be installed, my new wireless router arrived from Invade IT in Hua Hin:

    http://www.invadeit.co.th/product/wireless-networking/tp-link/archer-c9-ac1900-wireless-dual-band-gigabit-router-p022041/

This is the best in the AC1900 speed class, for the money. I'm going to hardwire it to the fibre modem, to maximise wireless speeds.

Remember, I'm on 3BB 50/20 VDSL at the moment.

I hardwired the new router to my existing 3BB VDSL modem and the speed increase was spectacular!!!

First photo: speed test with ten-year-old wireless router.

Second photo: speed test with new dual band router.

Conclusion..............it's worth getting a new router as technology improves, even if you don't update your line speed.

Now I'm waiting to see how much faster the fibre is.

  3. My understanding is that you have to go with the one they supply, because it has the modem in it...............but you don't have to use the wireless router part of their modem-router.

Their unit has network cable sockets in the back so you can hardwire your own fancy wireless router to one of those and get the maximum bandwidth supplied to your own router, thus not being restricted by their wireless router being only single-band (2.4GHz).

  4. So, on Friday I went into my local 3BB shop and signed up for the 100/30 service.

It was very simple and they said I'd have to wait up to one month for installation because the promotion was so popular. No problem.

I paid 800 THB for the modem-router and was assured that there were no other installation charges.

The modem-router is made by Fiberhome and isn't cutting edge. The wireless router is single band, at 2.4GHz.

I will use Cat6 network cable to connect the 3BB router to a new dual band AC1900 (speed rating) wireless router which should maximise the wireless speed available.

    Can't wait!

  5. @Pib

    Excellent answer, thank you!

I have a query about the Fibre and my existing wireless router.

My understanding is that when fibre enters the home it needs a modem to convert the fibre signal to digital. VDSL has a modem to convert analogue to digital.

So with both, you have a modem which presents you with an RJ45 Ethernet socket into which you then plug your network cable, whether it's a hardwired system or a network cable from your wireless router.

So, unless 3BB have an all-in-one modem-router for fibre, I should be able to use my own wireless router.

My question on that was, if I use my own, will the speed be capped or won't it work at all?

Do you have an all-in-one thing or separate modem and router?

  6. We live in Rawai, Phuket.

Our internet is VDSL from 3BB. The rated speed is something like 30/10 or maybe 50/20, I can't remember.

I wanted to check which package we have (as I clearly can't remember the speed), so I went to the 3BB site and came across this promotion of Fibre 100/30 for the same money that I'm paying for VDSL: 700THB/month.
Changing over seems like a no-brainer. The installation fee appears to be 2,000 THB.

    Advice from fibre users, please:

     - Is 3BB fibre, fibre all the way to your house?

     - Will 3BB supply a new modem as part of the installation?

     - If I can't afford a new wireless router straight away, will my old router just cap the higher fibre speed, or do I have to buy a new router?

     - 3BB call this a promotion. Will the price ever shoot up?
The website says cryptically, "* Apply within 31 to 60 can get a promotion. Lifetime"

Does this mean that I can get the price fixed for a while, if I apply by a certain date? I can't make sense of it.

     - Is it quicker to apply online or to go to a 3BB shop?

Many thanks for any assistance.

  7. @Thainess

Your last comment sounds a little like a troll post.

You can, of course, say what you like but to say that no diets work is clearly not true.

Many diets will produce weight loss, even if it's only as a result of the diet reducing the total intake of calories.

The LCHF way of eating is definitely healthy and is based on sound science (see earlier posts).

The Keto Diet is a more extreme method of weight loss, based on LCHF principles. It is not recommended as a long-term diet but will result in significant weight loss.

These are facts, however your opinion is only your opinion.

Listen to your body isn't science, it's woo.....for most rational people. You can do many things about your diet and you'll still feel better. It takes physiological evidence to put one on the right track. Maybe I don't have the ability to hear my body, but I know how to try something and see how my body reacts to it.

I choose nothing more hardcore than reducing calories from carbs and increasing calories from fatty foods, with protein and veggies/fruit controlled to reasonable levels.

I find the science behind this makes it credible and a good way of controlling blood glucose, insulin levels and fat deposition. Exercise and training on top of this is beneficial, of course.

The thing is: the low fat paradigm is debunked.

This isn't a fad. It's the real thing. The science is there, despite what some have said in this thread.

High carbs....put in processed food to replace the taste/satisfied feelings lost by reducing fat....lead to spiking insulin levels and ultimately insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.

High carbs also lead to increases in the type of cholesterol which is the main cause of heart problems related to diet.

An LCHF diet is the way to go, for health and fitness.

I think we're on the same track. I largely agree with what you say.

    @peterb17

    Here's the evidence I promised.

It's in the form of a video presented by Dr Robert Lustig of the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr Lustig is a paediatric endocrinologist and a specialist in childhood obesity.

These are his credentials :  http://profiles.ucsf.edu/robert.lustig

and this is his entry in Wikipedia:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Lustig

    The video is here:   http://www.uctv.tv/shows/Sugar-The-Bitter-Truth-16717

It is called "Sugar: the Bitter Truth" and can also be found on YouTube.

The video goes into the detailed biochemistry of carbohydrate and fat metabolism which should please peterb17, and there are peer-reviewed papers aplenty which will hopefully satisfy lvr181.

It's a long watch at an hour and a half but if you want to know why refined carbohydrates are causing the current obesity and diabetes epidemic and why the low-fat diet advice from the 70s onwards was not only wrong but subsequently led to the aforementioned epidemic, it's all there.

I find the arguments compelling. I look forward to your thoughts.
