  1. Been there, done that...

One down the toilet, and one another time in my pocket and put it in the washing machine, first time tried the stupid rice trick, that didn't help...second time it was insured, so i got a new one. Now i always make sure its 'backed up', instead of trying to remember all your log-ins for every app on your phone.

  2. I had severe sciatica down both legs, tried everything, exercise, xrays, that stretching machine thing, pills.....then i went and had acupuncture with electric pulses, and suction cups and its great. I had 4 sessions, it was fine, then it came back slowly, so i went again for 5 or 6 sessions, haven't been back since. Its not expensive here, between 500-700 baht a time. I wish i had done it years ago.

  3. The problem is the room aircon filters most likely need cleaning, same problem with air buses.

When traveling I always carry rubber gloves, a small container of liquid detergent and another of chlorine (Heiter). Upon renting a room remove the air filter upon which you will realize why you must wear gloves, as the filter is usually a clogged mess of strange colored muck. Rinse the filter in the toilet using the shower house; not the shower-bath as you will stand there eventually. Soak the rinsed filter in a soap-chlorine mix in the sink or trash bucket, for at least 20 minutes while you take your shower. Afterwards rinse off the filter, shake and let dry near the window. Go out on the town and upon return replace the filter if you haven't already.

Awake the next day without throat problems!

Do try this at home and office....

Only solution to bus aircons is to wear a proper mask, not the basic 'few Baht' one but a

    3M Respirator Mask 9211N95.

    Don't leave home without one...really.

The above solutions may well prevent bacterial lung infection and save your life. FWIW...

What are you going to do if the paint in the room isn't the right shade of drap

    Paint It whistling.gif

That is being totally silly, you know damn well his bag is full of detergent , chlorine and rubber gloves. How the hell is he gonna carry a big pot of paint? He will just change all the light fittings to an ambient filter.....that should do it....lol. He turns the mattress, airs the bed sheets...umm, what else? his holiday is over, just time to pack, oh no, its ok, he didn't have time to un-pack.....
  4. In this heat perhaps you should open another thread as a possible obituary.

With respect , although you like to walk without a hat and say the heat does not effect you ..... heat stroke can come on gradually without you noticing it and if that happens your budget will go right out the window.

Might be best to break into your budget and invest in a hat before you set out. If the cost is prohibitive you could at least use a handkerchief knotted in the four corners to stop your brain frying.

    OK, good advice.

I will use a straw hat.

But, you probably know, the straw hats don't stay on well.

I suppose I could use some tin foil, but would not consider it.

I will take a hat, agreed.

Tin foil? Sorry, but you are taking the piss....you got me laughing anyway, good luck with that, you loony toon...555

Laughs are invaluable, these days, and I am happy if I was able to provide you one.

If everyone were less fashion conscious and more practical, then we would all be using some sort of hat made of aluminum.

Everyone knows that the coolest houses are those which have tin roofs, just look around.

They are more costly, but they make up for the initial expense by reducing energy costs.

If I were walking in an unpopulated area, in the sun, I probably would create a broad brimmed straw hat with an aluminum reflective coating on it.

That way, the hat could still breath, but the majority of the surface area would be reflective, and shield me from radiation of the sun.

No doubt it has been tried before, but I have not seen any around Chiang Mai.

I would have thought a tin foil hat would boil your head to like 500 degrees...lol

anyway, you seem to have it all planned out, except maybe using brand new, tight fitting leather shoes, the sore blisters would take your mind off the rabid dog bites, and the 'mirages' from heat exhaustion...maybe thinking you see a beer bar, but its only water...hahaha. Have a good trip, gawd help yer.

  5. Well if you are married and have kids then buying makes much more sense. When I go 6 feet under my wife will inherit the house.

Exactly, if you have a lovely wife, and kids as you have, there's nothing better than to have your own home, that YOU can maintain, and do whatever you feel you need to do to make it nice. Instead of having to call the owner to come fix the aircon, or fix the roof.....etc.
  6. Well done mate, so you're a renter then....i got nothing against renters, but why do you lot always say buyers are stupid? Its always "you must be mad to buy in thailand", why? If thats what people want to do, its up to them. Not everyone has been 'burnt' by ex-gf's, you know.

The trick is, not to put any amount of money into thailand that you can't afford to lose...true?

Maybe you can't afford to lose a few mill, huh?

Its really up to the individual, buy or not buy, but don't say the other one is stupid...khao jai?

I would only consider purchasing if I intended to live in the property at least 10 years and don't mind watching the management neglect maintenance and rob the place or have neighbors destroy your peace and quiet...like some jerk with a home entertainment system or even worse,......... an all night karaoke bar owned by police, opens across the street or a rooster farm or dog kennel or metal crushing business or some gigantic flashing billboard.........

You know how frustrating it can be to call the City Hall Hotline 100 times and get no results?

Quite honestly, if you do a lot of home-work checking around, and look at places in the area you want, that are nice for you, and not for the lower class type of people, it usually works out ok. Look on the driveways, pick-ups with huge speakers? or a new style car, that says 'I am not a noisy neighbor'. I have never just bought a house because i like it, it has to be checked out for all circumstances, then your chances of buying a dud is greatly reduced, it hasn't failed me yet.

If i go look at a moo baan, i don't drive in there with blinkers on, i take everything in, a lot of soi-dogs in a new estate? start engine, and retreat...lol. My moo baan, to me is very good, great neighbors, only 1or 2 soi dogs, and even they aren't near my house. It's 7-8 years old now, no security on the gate, but i have cameras, and electric gates, and in a soi that is close to the main gate. All this because i done my homework, (no pun intended).

  7. better off renting by far, why would you want to buy?

I am well aware of all the arguments for and against buying. I'm not a wide eyed newbie fresh off the plane and in lust, I have actually lived in the area for a few years and know the area inside out along with all the pros and cons.......

Renting tends to get tedious after a while. Never worried me when I was younger, but I believe we all want to call some place home and now being in my late fifties I want to have a small base in Pattaya and similar back in Aussie on the Sunshine Coast. In a few years I will eventually work online as a consultant in my specialized area of engineering and I want to be able to flit between the two locations as required. I want to be able to just pull the door shut and leave from each one without having to pack or worry about anything, and able to walk back in to either and start work within minutes. Renting doesn't suit this lifestyle.

I'm not in a hurry either. Currently working in the Philippines, I can afford to just sit back and wait for the right one to come along. The condos I am looking at are beachfront, very quiet, not shoeboxes, solid and secure and for that I will pay a premium, which I'm ok with. I would never purchase in one of the poor quality mass produced shoeboxes that are springing up around the place.

I'm not overly motivated by money either, its really just the lifestyle I'm looking for. If it doesn't go up well so be it, at least I'm not handing over rent money each month. The only reason I asked about prices increasing was general curiosity and to do with the timing of my purchase.

Well said....I feel quite a lot of the rent brigade only rent because they don't have 10, 15 million to buy a property...good luck to you sir, and welcome you to the buying brigade...it will save putting 20/25,000 baht or more a month into someone else's pocket

Well, I'm one that leans towards renting here. I own multiple properties in my home country in addition to other businesses and investments so I'm not part of your rent brigade. I think you need to make a distinction between spending money and wasting money. Also, between a primary residence as an investment vs. a place to call home regardless of the financial hit.

Like previously mentioned by another poster, the main reason I have not bought here because of the lack of respect people have for their neighbors and others in general. I've experienced too many horror stories myself of neighbors and loud just about everything. I'm a real quiet person and I'm fine with noisy crazy life in public in Thailand, I expect that, but I like my home to be my sanctuary. And yes, I have had that and do now with renting.

I don't want to hear what my neighbor is watching on TV, stereo, or them talking to each other. If you buy, who knows what and who you are anchored to around you. It's much easier to move from a rental than a purchased home.

Plus, I can get much better return on my money elsewhere than buying something here. Significantly more. I know about the status thing here too, it was like that in my home country. I don't care about trying to impress anyone with owning vs. renting. My biggest incentive for considering buying here is so I have less money in a Western country with a fragile economy.

Owning has its advantages of course. I miss having a house to work on my car or motorcycle, build little things for the house and have a backyard to kick back in. But now, I have a beach 100 yards away to kick back in instead.

In summary, each person has to figure out if the purchase is an investment or a personal choice based on personal/emotional reasons, not financial ones and go from there.

    Just my two cents.....

Well done mate, so you're a renter then....i got nothing against renters, but why do you lot always say buyers are stupid? Its always "you must be mad to buy in thailand", why? If thats what people want to do, its up to them. Not everyone has been 'burnt' by ex-gf's, you know.

  8. Regarding the hogging of multiple lanes/driving on the line between two lanes, it's just poor driving habits....Thais have so many poor drivnig habits to including tailgating, infrequent use of turn signals, etc. These habits exist because of little driver training and probably most importantly little to no traffice law enforcement other than at checkpoints where drivers turn into angels. And watch out of all motorcycles as they are by far the most dangerous thing on Thai roads....motocycles represent approx 80% of the deaths and injuring on Thai roads. When driving Thai courtesy like seen in their homes goes out the window....it's now Mr Hyde behind the wheel, not Dr Jekyll.

Regarding the backing into parking spaces, I really don't see any difference between backing in and driving in. Kinda like how about half the world drives on the left side and half on the right side. Plus how the packing lines are aligned makes a huge difference in whether people back in or drive in....if the parking lines are angled they'll drive in...but if the lines are straight out they almost always back in.

Never really noticed that about the parking bay lines before....but its true, i do that as well...hahaha. I was waiting for a thai driver to reverse into a space a while back, he must have had 4 or 5 attempts at it, with a smallish car...i parked a few spaces away, straight in first time, in a Pajero.

How about the guy in the middle lane, suddenly wants to turn right...whoosh, not a care in the world...

or the motorbike coming steaming up the road the wrong way, flashing his lights for you to get out of HIS way...don't you just love 'em? 555

  9. There is a place in the Mall where i got a special bulb, on the second floor, but don't know the name...try going on Expat Korat/Nakhon Ratchasima facebook page, there are loads of guys on there that can tell you, they are happy to oblige as well...good luck.

  10. better off renting by far, why would you want to buy?

  11. I am and always have been against the EU. It is a corrupt and rotten organisation from top to bottom. It only serves the non elected thieves that are in it for themselves and their zionist NWO bankster mafia bosses. The UK which has the best and proudest history of all the countries in europe that has repelled all invaders since 1066, implemented the Magna Carta in 1215

    http://www.bl.uk/magna-carta/articles/magna-carta-an-introduction

went through the reformation which removed the oppressive catholic church from power, went through a bloody civil war, started the industrial revolution, the first country to abolish slavery and with our allies defeated three tyrants that virtually destroyed the rest of europe, Napoleon, Kaiser Wilhelm II and Hitler. We stood firm in the cold war against the jewish communists of the USSR who brutally controlled and subjugated many of the countries that are now part of the EU. The EU want more power, their own military force, new member states such as Turkey and the Ukraine. They destroyed Greece by bankrupting it so the filthy paymasters could buy up all of the public services at rock bottom price while subjecting the people and those of Portugal, Italy, Ireland and Spain to severe austerity measures with threats from the ECB and IMF if they didn't comply. They've rode rough shod over democratic vote after democratic vote and showed their contempt for the people of europe, most lately, the Dutch. Well a Brexit vote is one they can't ignore and it will bring down the whole Sorros backed house of cards. The UK will be able to hold it's head high again, remove the self serving pig Cameron from power, bring democracy back and be a free nation that can set sail on its own corse once again. Rule Britannia. I love my country and served 22 years as a soldier. I just want my country back for the sake of the British people.

The points I mention above barely scratch the surface as to my reasons for wanting out.

Hear hear....i wish there were more like you and me, we could take over the world again...5555

Good post mate....watch the link i posted (post #37) gives me goosebumps...555

    Ok I hear you.

You want out because you don't want to be bossed around and with the same breath you say "we could take over (boss around) the world again".

Another one that cannot see i was joking....555 means hahaha, means i was J.O.K.I.N.G, don't be so freakin' serious mate...go on, let it all out, have a good chuckle.
  12. Oh come on, think about it, if you were wealthy, would you or would you not do exactly the same thing to protect your own wealth? I think you would, i would definitely.

As for punishing the poor, they have to ask themselves "why are we so poor". My phylosophy is to either make something of your life, or stay poor. I was poor once, I had nothing, been given nothing, and just worked my ass off for what i have, now i can afford to live a comfortable-ish life, not rich, not poor. When you have worked hard, and saved a little, you should be able to keep most of it. Then let the 'poor' earn their own money....that's just my view, thats how i have lived my life, not just waiting for hand-outs.

Most of these 'poor' people could do something to change to a better life, but they are just too damn lazy.

Maybe you are right; although I am not in the position to find out, I like to think that my integrity and my innate sense of morality would prevent me from exploiting any such position were I to land so lucky. That said, human nature and all that, maybe I am just as greedy as the next politician.

I am afraid I don't agree with your next statement. Of course the self made man is not a myth, but if you come from a Western country then, no matter how impoverished your upbringing was, you started life pretty close to the top rung of the ladder. I live near a slum and often see the street kids running around. No matter how many potential geniuses there are amongst them, the chances of them breaking free from the cycle of poverty is almost zero. No amount of hard work will change that - in fact, all they will probably know will be back breaking work and poverty. It is not correct to say that the two cannot go hand in hand.

I wouldn't exactly say avoiding tax is being greedy, i would say it was just protecting what is yours, inherited or earned. I am not saying to evade taxation, but i don't believe that benefit scroungers from anywhere, home or away, should take an even bigger slice of my pie. There are too many lazy-assed people that think hard working people should pay for their 50"TV. I would make them work for it.

So to sum up, if you've got it....hide it, or lose it.

  13. I would like to see the U.K. stay in the E.U. I am a U.K. citizen and on a purely personal view there are many reports that the British pound would tank by approx. 20% which would be extremely detrimental to my financies .
Who is reporting this? Cameron, Osborne? They are using every scare tactic possible. Nobody knows what will happen, but in the long term, it could (no one knows) get much better. The exchange rate isn't exactly soaring away for us Brits IN the EU....is it?
Don't you want to see a Britain being British again? the EU was a good thing when we joined, but have you even noticed that we have absolutely no say in anything, but Merkel can do and say what she likes. Merkel and Junker talk like they decide what we should get, or not get. But do you EVER see Cameron stand up to Merkel? We are just a Province of Germany now, not equal to them.

You appear to have a very selective view. What exactly is British? Those who have white skin and blonde hair? Likely they came from another country a few generations back anyway.

Well, one thing's for sure, you are NOT British, even if it says so on your passport....if you were British, you wouldn't have to ask. anyway, this is a thread about the FUTURE, not what happened centuries ago. You socialists are the only ones who bring colour of skin into everything

Classic bigot!!! I guess if not being a bigot defines me as a socialist then happy to be one

    ????????????????????????????????????????

If calling me a bigot is all you have, then you are deffo a socialist....don't even know where that came from, but hey-ho, if calling names makes you happy....

Now we see your true colours: 'we could take over the world again': jingoistic, anti-Semite ' the jewish communists of the USSR who brutally controlled and subjugated many of the countries that are now part of the EU', ill-informed, backward looking 'little Englander' that you are!

Wow, you are having a nice go at me today...do you know what 5555 means? It means hahahaha...meaning i was only joking...jeezus, calm down, sit, take a deep breath, now see the off button on your screen, click on that....there, doesn't that feel better? Have a good day.

    What tripe!

Merkel allowed her humanity to overrule her economic judgement concerning refugees

What else have you against her?

    What have you against Germany?

I tell you this, it's a much nicer society in Germany than in the USA

    Try it ?

You are right, nothing wrong with Germans, i agree. I have been to germany many times, but its Merkel i can't like, even the germans are turning on her....by the way, what has the USA got to do with it? I am not American....

No definitely not, i would prefer to see the death of 'jingoism'.

Seems like Merkel has already brain-washed you, what is wrong with being patriotic?, not to the extreme, but there is the problem in Britain right there. Are you even British? or just a British passport holder?

If you hold a British passport you are British. I think you probably define being British as born there with white skin. Britain has grown a long way since that definition held, thankfully

Yeah, ok, you win....have a nice day.

  19. Quite a few people seem to be concerned about the level of the pound in the event of Brexit. Putting aside self interest (it would also affect me), I really find it difficult to believe that the market would give a 20+% competitive advantage to the (already) strongest, large economy in the EU bloc. Smoke and mirrors... Therefore...

I am in the Leave camp - not because I have issues with individual Europeans, or migration and so on - but because of the growing accountability gap in the central institutions. The Commission, the EU courts wherever you look, half a century since the end of WW2, we are looking at the growth of a centrist, command juggernaut which is utterly impossible to steer.

We joined a trade pact. Far from liberalising the terms of trade, the EU has fossilised them. We would save money which could be put to better use, and we could freely associate with the world at large without going through the EU's sclerotic trade processes. We could form a loose coalition with the like minded - Norway in particular, but also Switzerland, Iceland (nand probably not a long way down the turnpike, Finland and perhaps Sweden) - to better balance negotiations with the EU.

You are so right....europe is old and tired now, Asia is the new Europe, all the emerging market are there to make deals with...it sounds quite exciting to think about how it all could turn out with a Brexit....but people in Britain now are so scared of CHANGE, they have become weak minded, and easily led, not lead. That is what Brexit is for, to lead other countries to follow....

No definitely not, i would prefer to see the death of 'jingoism'.

Seems like Merkel has already brain-washed you, what is wrong with being patriotic?, not to the extreme, but there is the problem in Britain right there. Are you even British? or just a British passport holder?
