  1. if it worked before try a system retore to a point when it worked

not totally clear on what is actually happening by your description, is your screen just going blankor window freezes up or both, do you have to reboot to get it back again, is your hardrive active when this happens ?

sounds like your browser is not allowing you to access a scure website

  2. starve them, you will not have a pest problem if there is nothing to eat, use bleach sprayed at entry and exit points from a spray bottle that you can buy in supermarket, then thay are gone, I know this after spilling sugar on my floor after making a cup of coffee, nest morning the little search ant had found it and gone got his 100,000 friends for a feast

  3. Thailand needs teachers to educate the government officiials on how not to be stupid, they are children, something I have discovered after living here a while...............they are like children

present some of the senarios that we see govenment take here to a primary school in the west and I really think you will see similar ressults

they just haven't got a clue

  4. go to the end of 2nd road where the Bowling complex is....Soi 0 just past big C on the left, there is a bar call Shark, they have a very good live band on from 10pm - 1am then Karaoke into the small hours, they also have excellent food and a pool table. 10baht 5 min from cental pattaya.

  5. By the way, when you fellows talk about the instability of scooters and the centrifugal/centripetal forces acting on the wheels, are you taking into consideration the fact that the scooter wheels are twice as wide as the motorbike wheels? Does that tend to counteract the instability caused by the tire diameters being smaller?

Just an observation driving here for the last year

If the police would start to prosecute people for these motoring offences we might see a reduction in the accident rate.

    1. Running red lights - happens in pattaya every time I stop at a traggic light, two bikes very close to being hit by cars tonight - within inches trying to run across a busy junction

    2. No lights on

    3. driving the wrong direction

    4. U turns at unofficial spots

    5. Speeding in the city/built up areas

I don't care if someone chooses not to wear a helmet, it doesn't endanger other road users.

Pattaya traffic seems to be unpoliced after about 7pm at night........this needs to change, the police also need to start giving tickets for the above mentioned offences, They need a traffic branch 24hrs a day, touring around with a ticket book, only then will things start to improve.

  6. I would say about half of all vehicles on the road have headlights that are simply too bright...nearly the equivalent of high beams back in the States. Where I come from, you can't use high beams within 100 meters or so of an oncoming driver. The headlights here are very dangerous for other drivers...I can't remember how many times I've been blinded by some idiot driving towards me.

I think you will find they are poorly adjusted or they are just driving on high beam and DGAF, I agree it's a common problem, My bike is fitted with HID lights and they are quite simply amazing

  7. A big bike is more stable at slow speeds, I have both small and big and can drive and balance my big bike at much slower speeds than the little one

Big bikes are less stable on loose surfaces than little bikes mostly because they are heavier, off road machines are specifically designed for that purpose including tyres so they are better on loose surface big or small.

  8. American breakfast at Wild Chicken on Soi Post Office (close to 2nd rd end) is huge and a good deal. Has excellent hash browns, which are rare here.

right now I think the Stags Head has the best home made food in pattaya, you can get breakfasts or a full dinner at reasonable prices, it's on soi LKmetro next to the stereo bar soi bukeow (spelling)

  9. Since when is a sub 250cc a LARGE BIKE ? :o

In my book large bikes are 1000cc+.

    A 400cc is an entry-level bike.

    Anything smaller is a runaround.

    :D

Well said and thank God somebody thinks the same as me.

I tried asking some questions about this a while back but nobody would give an answer.

The topic just went back to Waves and Dreams. It was quite sad really.

Can anyone tell me why these little things are so popular in Thailand?

What are the rules/laws regarding motorbike size. Is it 200cc max?

If so, how do some people get around it.

    Vegemite

Little bikes are so popular because that's almost all there is, they are cheap & excellent value for money for most people's needs - riding around town / the village.

Local bike manufacture is restricted to 200cc capacity. There are some bigger bikes being made, but these are for export only & supposedly not for the local market.

To get around not having a small bike, you need to buy a big one.

The best way to do this is to buy from a big bike dealer / shop & there are heaps of them if you can be bothered to look around. Just buy any Thai bike magazine & you will adverts for big bikes for sale at many big bike shops.

It is not practical to import your own bike.

    1. You need an Import Permit, from the Ministry of Commerce to import an assembled vehicle (car or motorbike). I think that motorcycles over 150-200cc (not sure of the exact capacity) are classified in with motorcars / vehicles and so are subject to whatever laws apply to cars. But the important bit is that you first need the import permit, before you can even consider importing an assembled bike.

    2. Then the full Customs duty is 213% of the value of the vehicle. I think that Customs have a list of the bike values & if your invoice does not “match up” then they apply their own market value. So there is no easy cheats way out – you have to pay, & heavily.

    3. Then once you get your bike in your have to get it licensed & I think that there is a hefty fee for the initial rego compliance test. After that it’s only a few hundred baht a year, plus insurance.

    4. Unassembled bikes – these come in by the container load as 2nd hand parts & are only subject to 30-40% customs duties. These are the bikes that you usually see on the roads of Thailand without a number plate. Without the plate they are technically illegal & if you’re in Bkk / Pattaya / Phuket, the police tend to give you a hard time. Elsewhere up-country it does not seem to be such a problem, but you normally can’t leave the country on an unregistered motorcycle.

    5. Any licenced big bikes you see could be either legally imported (BMW) with full duties paid or registered grey imports – previously unassembled ones. Cost for this grey import rego is anything from 50,000 baht up, depending on whom you are dealing with. Most of the books are recycled books with the bike having engine & frame numbers re-stamped to match up with an old book / bike that was previously registered. Now there are dealers who claim their books are not recycled, how they managed this I don’t know but the crunch always comes when you either need to renew your bike rego or transfer the place of registration &/or ownership. Most of the time it works, but there are cases where it the renewal / transfer does not get approved. Sometimes this is because the bike might registered as 20 or 30 years old but it is only a few years old, the number of cylinders or capacity are wrong. These are all little traps you need to watch out for when buying a registered bike. If you never sell the bike or change the place of registration you might never have a problem, but if you’re buying, then check it all closely if you are going to change the place of registration from one province to another, as your local officials might like to be official & pay attention to what you’ve supposedly got.

    6. Now the big bike import system is so well organized that you can almost get any bike you want within a couple of months. You just need to have the balls to plonk down your deposit money with a reliable / reputable big bike shop, & wait your turn for the bike & rego to turn up.

And that about sums it all up I think.

Oh yeah if you’ve lost touch & been away from BIG bikes for awhile:

The Triumph Rocket III = 2294cc triple engine. Torque, 147lb-ft at 2,500 rpm. 240 section rear tyre.

    Take a look at http://www.triumph.co.uk/uk/263.aspx

Other big bikes in 2006 are

    BMW: 1200cc K1200

HONDA: VTX 1800cc cruiser, GL1800cc tourer (with reverse electric drive & air bag), ST1300cc tourer

KAWASAKI: Vulcan 2000cc cruiser, ZX1400cc sport bike,

SUZUKI: 1300cc Hayabusha sport bike, M109R 1800cc cruiser,

    YAMAHA: 1700 cc Roadstar cruiser, 1700cc M1T-01

“torque sports”, 1300cc Royal Star tourer. 1300cc FJR sport tourer , 1200cc V-Max.

    HARLEY: 1450cc various machines

And my bike is a Honda 750 Africa Twin, “perfect” for touring the roads of North Thailand and Laos.

For all you guys out there wondering - the perfect bike is the one you enjoy riding the most and that will be totally different for different riders on different roads. You all please yourself now, but don’t slag each other off. Enjoy what you do & be happy riding your machine!

Last but not least, I dont think it's worth importing your own bike. Buy locally.

great post Dave....should be a sticky on this motor forum

PS you left out one of the best sport/touring bikes currently available........Honda CBR 1100XX Blackbird

  10. Read the tone of the posts on this thread.

We have a young lady dead. Thats a fact and that is sad and tragic.

We have an older man who stated he did it and attempted suicide. Thats also very sad.

I would probably guess that the old guy came to his senses and is very remorseful over what he apparently did.

But again feel the tone of the retorts, replies and comments on this thread.

All the holier than thou individuals, as usual I might add, ready to castrate, kill, hang shoot or draw and quarter the bloke.

I am not a religious person, but it sure brings to mind some at least quasi religious thoughts. "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone" might be one

And maybe, There but for the grace of God , go I" might be another.

Why as much venom in the posts, does it make each of us who post like that somewhat stronger or in some way superior? I kind of feel bad , because maybe someday I will find myself in such a prediciment..

I do offer my condolences to the girls family.

    :o

Ok Gang .... rip me apart

Sir,you have put it far better than I ever could.Agree wholeheartedly.

Well this would all be fine if the stone throwers served a out a death penalty, I'd hardly she deserved to die for doing what most other thai working girls do to farangs.........rip them off, should they all die ?

This was a tragic incident, an unfortunate girl suffered the ultimate penalty, her crime ?

    Taking advantage of someones stupidity.

My thoughts to this girls family and friends.

  11. The minister also said his ministry will accelerate the merging of TOT and CAT, because the two agencies have the potential to compete with the private sector but so far they have been offering services that compete against one another.

Should the two be merged strength in business would be created.

Until the private sector is allowed in, this will just create a total monopoly in the telecoms sector. :o

100% correct, totally going backwards, this is not what Thailand needs right now, the mobile and internet infrastructure are getting worse by the day....................they have cut the Mobile bandwidth/quality down so far that I often go look for a landline because i cannot make out what the person is saying, totally useless, broadband internet is now slower than dialup

    That's progress Thai style

  12. Saying you've lived in Pattaya for X number of years is of no bearing on this thread, the risk rating for Pattaya is the concern, you may not have been victim yet but have the odds increased that you will be ???????

The other alarming thing about Pattaya/Thailand is the willingness of Thai crriminals to murder farang for a few 1000baht, it's not just a theft - tehy will kill you, there are gangs of teenagers with guns in pattaya who will shoot you for the fun of it, that's what is disturbing,.

  13. in one hour i was on my way to cancel my account, i told maxnet they had until today to get me what i am paying for, >300kps

today i did an international bandwidth test and got 382kps

nothing has changed regarding ip address etc but the route has changed.

  14. I have a 3wk old XPS M1710 w/ T2500, 100gig, 1gig, dvd-r, 7900gtx etc etc

I want to sell it as I've firmed up my decision to relocate.

Is there a chance I'd be able to sell it for more in BKK than in the US even though it's a US unit?

Just thought I'd ask since people have posted about going to the US to buy lappies to take back to BKK.

    Thanks for any info

Good machine I have the previous model Gen2 XPS awesome gaming machine. I had to buy my laptop in Canada because I coudn't find any place that sells top spec gaming laptops in Thailand.

That's kind of why I was thinking maybe I should take it there to sell. It's a bit a of a niche computer, but certainly top of the line. I suppose I'll try throwing an ad in my paper here and see what happens, and if it doesn't sell, I'll bring it with.

    ebay

  15. I have also sent them e-mails and I get replys that the technician is coming to fix it well they did come to my house today. After a lot of checks they told me my house telephone is faulty so They removed it and said thats it job done. Well I can say that the service I got was very good but the only thing they did not do was fix the broadband as its still only 70 kbps :o

I regularly get those kind of these in the afternoon... went as low as 1.5kbps one time. :D

Well i am leaving maxnot this month and their bill is sitting on my desk and i really have to say i do not want to pay it, i will do my best not to pay it as long as i dont make myself more problems for the sake of 800 Baht.

I've also considered this in the past but realised it's not worth getting cut off over.

in a last ditch attempt to get this sorted, I have asked them to move me to a different gateway 124.157 as opposed to 57.147, if this doesn't work I am leaving, I will also be asking for a refund.

thiis is just not good enough
