  1. Yes and I have nothing nice to say about UPS Thailand. If you live close to the airport they do the “paperless customs registration “ for you but if you live in issan they want you to come to the airport to register. Trip would have cost as much as the package. They were going to “abandon “ the package until I filed a complaint with Amazon and they were able to give me a credit and get the package shipped back. Nothing but hassle from UPS. I will never have anything else sent here via UPS. Safest way is USPS.

  2. Yes. I use mine regularly. Only once had a problem at Air Asia ticket counter flying Buriram to BKK. Kid behind the counter said on back of card it says ‘can only be used in Buriram.’  I explained error in his ways   However he insisted so I showed him my driver license. After he said ok no problem I said by the way the card is issued in Buriram and the airport is in Buriram so what’s the problem?  He just couldn’t understand that logic!

  3. My rules would be:

    1. If over 64 and not able to afford an international medical insurance policy or already have medical insurance, absolutely not. (See my information below on that topic).

    2. If not able to handle the heat, not.

    3. If not able to handle loneliness and isolation,  not.

    4. If not having a minimum off 100k USD available for funding your life and "buying" the lifestyle you want,  not.

    5. If not able to live with unpredictable government and immigration law and rules,  not......

On obtaining medical insurance in Thailand when over 65.

I researched this until I was exhausted.  Pacific Cross kept coming up as the great option always suggested by TV members.

For the record,  at 67 years old  I was not eligible for any except 3 of a dozen different companies.   Pacific Cross was very clear on the quote they gave me.  I am only eligible for an "international plan", and because I have had laser treatment for my retinas and take medication for high cholesterol,  those are both preexisting conditions.   Any vision or coronary artery or heart disease is not covered.

The cheapest plan with Pacific Cross was around 9000 USD a year. The better plan was around 12,000 USA a year.

I grew tired of everyone telling me how I could get an affordable policy, and I applied for several different plans that I was not already eliminated. The best I could find that would actually pay and cover me was Cigna International and Geoblue with no exclusion on preexisting conditions.

The Geoblue expatriate policy for my age starts at 1200 USA dollars a month and goes up, as do they all with age.

For Pacific Cross, I've included the links and information.

I state again.  I actually applied and got quotes.  Here are the links you can read for yourselves.

So did you go with Cigna? I did. My rates are a bit less because of age. They cover me anywhere except America because healthcare is so expensive there. If I need an outpatient visit for something I go to the local government hospital. I use a private lab for yearly blood tests which costs about 1500 baht. Cigna was certainly the best bet for me.

  4. get 2   23andme  DNA kits .... you spit in it, let your baby drewl in it ... you send it to 23andme, and 1-3 months later, you see if you 2 match or not... pretty easy and cheap ... ask friend/parents to order 2 kits in USA,   EMS them to you , EMS them back to them

You need to know fairly soon. If it is yours then you should have your name on the birth certificate. This is useful for visa application.

As for never telling your real name, not sure I agree.

    Yours truly,

    Alan Harper

  5. I did an ACH to BKK bank a few days ago and got a letter from the bank about how IAT is required, etc.  They did say that they will "try" to continue to process old format ACH transfers until June 30, but they want you to use SWIFT or their baht remittance system instead.

I got the same letter today. I have used swift wires to BKKNY the last couple months to test the system. Works fine and is actually 2 days quicker.

  6. Transferwise does not always show in your statement or bank book as international transfer. Be careful.

No one I know has been able to find a bank or credit union in America that will do ACH transfers in IAT format. I think SSA can do it. Otherwise you have to use SWIFT wire to BKKNY in order to get it here. Don’t convert the money to baht before you send it if using international swift. It costs a lot more.

    Many discussions on this topic.

  7. The rules state you must show a monthly income going into a Thai bank. Quarterly transfers will not be accepted.

I wonder if you have a currency account and transfer from that monthly but top up the currency account twice a year (saving $50 a month) would that be accepted? I’m going to ask next time I go to immigration.
