  1. Everyone knows a farang that constantly has problems with thais.  The reason is that they have not learned how to deal with thais.

If you go around acting like you do in the western world you are guaranteed to have problems.

When I have a problems with thais for whatever reason I just say it's all my fault.  I am wrong.  I made a mistake.  I am the stupid farang.  You get the idea.  Does not matter if it is your fault or not.  That is not the point.  If you do things that help a thai save face you will make your life much easier in Thailand.

The LAST thing you ever want to do is act/say/do things that makes thais feel like you think you are right and they are wrong.  That goes double/triple for farangs.  Thais dealing with thais can get away with it sometimes but that does not mean farangs can.

The drivers is the one who should take the safety of his passengers as priority. If he gets nervous from a complaint, he surely should not transport passengers. And you are saying that in such a life threatning situation the passenger should find a friendly approach? Can’t believe you are serious..
The only difference, if it would have been me, is that I would get out at the first opportunity.
Once I was in a very similar situation and the driver told me “farang better go home country” and I told him if all drivers would be that rude and dangerous, I surely would.

  2. Our Embassy ? a total joke. They care nothing about their nationals only about the real estate value. A worthless bunch who employ more locals to screw up support of British Nationals then any other embassy I have had dealings with.  Put bluntly they are a disgrace to the the UK and offer minimal support to any UK national who needs it.  I have written 12 times to  UK MPs over 37 years here to complain at their ineptitude and lack of support and amazingly I received 2 responses, both of which was total faeces diatribe.  Just about typifies the British government's concern for their own,  rather promoting the values of others.

Belgian Embassy is really working hard to steal the UK embassy’s crown for worse performance.
2 times employees of mine were refused business visa to go to a meeting in Belgium!

  3. My car registration book (blue book) still records my address as the one (a rented house) I lived at at the time of purchasing the car. I have moved four times since then, but never updated or renewed the book. I do pay my car tax and insurance but have never been asked to prove my address.

So, if my number is recorded on a camera, who they gonna call? I'm certain that the owner/occupants at my former address have no idea how to contact me now.

Are the computer systems at the vehicle registration office linked to other offices...?

I'm genuinely interested to know what will happen in such cases.

One day you won’t be able to renew you tax sticker. As you purposely avoided paying fines, you will get an additional fine or your driver licence could be revoked. Not a smart move from your side!

  4. Reading the CNN post was disappointing for me. Only statistical bs. Now some details I read in a German magazine.

The research was financed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

    But the results are questionable:

    • in 1 year of 100,000 people between 15 and 95 years old not drinking any alcohol, 914 people have fallen ill or received injuries

    • in 1 year of 100,000 people between 15 and 95 years old only having 1 daily alcoholic drink 918 people have fallen ill or received injuries in connection with alcohol. [only 4 more!]

    • Do 100.000 people daily consume 2 alcoholic drinks then there have been 977 cases of alcohol related illnesses each year. When drinking 5 glasses daily the number went up to 1252.

Among the 23 illnesses related to alcohol or injuries have been:

liver cirrhosis and -cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, heart attack, high blood pressure, bowel cancer, tuberculosis, self-injury, and also traffic accidents.

The British medical statistician David Spiegelhalter criticized the conclusion. There should be 25,000 people drinking together 400.000 bottles of gin for making a problem to one of them.

He said, because many of these health problems (in the statistic) concerned the 914 non-drinkers, too, it's not depending on alcohol. Otherwise the number of non-drinkers had to be zero. And the moderate alcohol drinking delivers some fun.

Statistics are interesting but what counts is own experience. I was drinking much to much but could quit entirely exactly 6 years ago. Gradually I could feel my body recovering but I think it took at least 5 years. Whatever statistics show, I knew for myself even one drink per day was harmful, but I am also convinced some people can drink what they want without any negative effect. This is the problem with statistics, it averages everything out but this doesn’t help the individual much.

  5. As mentioned by Jerry, floaters, which are very common after cataract surgery, are another consideration following cataract surgery.  Most of them dissolve and go away but you can be left with some permanent floaters which your brain will try to adapt to. I have a floater which I originally mistook for a mosquito and tried to swat it.  It is still there two years later but I am still much better off after surgery, as I would have lost my entire central vision without the macular hole surgery.  Cataract was just an add on.

It is possible to get rid of these floaters using laser or as in my case they suck out the fluid from the eye ball, filter it and inject again. No fun but very effective.

  6. Riding the MRT in rush hour is so unpleasant. It's full of poor, working and middle class phone zombies that bunch themselves up at the doors and steadfastly refuse to get on and off to allow people to alight. BEM needs to run logistic and politeness campaigns to get the zombies and lemmings to make this a less hateful experience. Not BEM minders but actual police stationed and controlling behavior, pulling people aside, warnings and noting names of misdemeanor.

The phone addicts, endless flickings and browsing of nothingness. The stultifying glaze in their eyes.

No lie, BEM MRT could move 25% more people if everyone just put their phones away. It's only what 35minutes end to end? I've lost immense respect for Thai people and humanity in the last year. God help us when phones go away and glasses reappear.

What do you suggest than people do on the train? Stare a each other? Picking their nose?

  7. Think the world may end tomorrow, or the those dam Russians will invade along with the Aliens, gloom & doom [emoji20]
    Get real..................... [emoji32]

“This will never happen to me” syndrome. For the past 30+ years people bought homes through Thai companies, this would never cause any problem right? Maybe nothing will happen until you upset somebody and they seek revenge.

  8. All our investments here are safely in my wife's name, who is 100% Thai. Well as safe as can be, with the politics and all...

You are in the same boat, you think your solution is safe? If your wife cannot prove she earned the money and there are traces leading to you as the provider of the money, the violation is IMO the same as described in this topic.

  9. And you have proof that all or most of the women wearing burqas are doing this out of fear of being beaten and not because they subscribe to what they believe are the religious tenets obliging them to do so?

Just look at their husbands who do have this freedom, and what are they wearing? Baseball caps with emblems from USA origin (fake), Ferrari T shirts (fake) and Nike sneakers (fake). Maybe they don’t “believe” as much as their women?

  10. Many automated doors are already installed at MRT and BTS stations. It is good to hear they will continue installing the rest. This will avoid; fainting people, selfie addicts, desperates, children and texting-zombies. You have no idea how many times the guards have to interfere to save people standing to close to the rails. For me Thailand is an example of well organized, clean and grafity free metro systems.

  11. Actually abortion is not always illegal in Thailand. But more to the point, what on earth are you talking about? The thread is not about abortion it is about adoption.

In this particular case, abortion is illegal.
In this thread several posts suggested abortion.
    So my point still stands.

  12. Well a V8 anything would be cool, though the diesel auto I had was a very nice car, though think a bit low for the roads I sometimes have to deal with here..

Sorry to be off topic but I did contribute in previous posts :) if I would choose Benz, I would go for the C63 but if you want a good price-quality car the C43 would do. Assembled in Thailand, 6cyl twin turbo 500HP for around 4.2 milj. However the new BMW m5 stole my heart..

  13. We keep getting this BS about how the German brands are so superior.
Fact 1. The bean counters started sharpening their pencils mid 1990's on the Mercedes brand.
Fact 2. Service and maintenance costs on the German brands are 2 - 3 times that of Japanese and Korean brands.
Fact 3. Compare the Kia Stinger against its Mercedes or BMW counterparts. It's embarrassing.
German brands are selling on prestige and past glories. They are not cost-competitive with the Japanese or Koreans, who can produce cars just as good. It's that simple.

BMW has a 5y or 100k full service. Until then there is nothing to be paid at all (besides new tires.)

  14. good price assumimg a proper job was done. i paid last year 65k to "blacken" our white Benz and now the Mrs is bitching and wants "her" car pure white again.

Shop can remove the wrap, don’t try yourself!
A few years ago, my wife was on business trip and I took her car to garage for sporty striping, color leather seats partly red and parts of dashboard. When she came back she was very pissed off and garage had to reverse to original...lesson learned
