Can I break into that field without being an engineer?
Doubt it. If it were that easy,
mostall of the pikeys on this thread would be queuing up to get a piece of that pie no matter what they bitterly guess about the future of the industryThey (the oil lads, not the pikeys) have their own sub forum here. You could try asking there.
Its a very decent field, If I went back 4-5 years in time, I probably would of studied Petroleum Engineering. I made some enquries before, realized that its impossible for me to break into a good position in exploration with my current qualifications.
Luke with your diplomatic connections why don't you apply to be the Turkish Trade Representative for SE Asia?
There's more money there than you could shake a stick at. Brown envelopes flying everywhere.
An airline pilot is a glorified bus driver and I can't imagine you up to your neck in grease on an oil rig.

Out of interest what does a farang working in the oil and gas sector in Thailand make on average per month?
Most don't only work in Thailand but work around the World but anything from $500 per day up to several thousand a day. Senior positions pay extremely well and it's usually all tax free.

If you told me you had shorted EUR/USD I would believe you but even then you would need a credit line of at least 200,000 EUR to make 3000 EUR profit on the 1.5% drop today. As I said dream on.
Heard of leverage?
My statement explains leverage or margin.

Shows what you know. It's only £2,000 - hardly
a windfall and given the ECB's been telegraphing
its QE/OMT aspirations/intentions for weeks, it
was inevitable the peg would have to go. Stick to
cheerleading your cronies

I made ฿100,000 on the Swissie/Euro currency pair today
and I had my beautiful 11 month-old daughter on my lap the
whole time. Unlike the O&G guys who've gotta be shitting
themselves as oil heads to $40, my only concerns
about the price of crude center solely on the best point
at which to shortsell it again.
I find this highly unbelievable because it was a surprise announcement from the Swiss Central Bank that they were cutting their Euro ties. So unless you had inside information it is highly improbable. Dream on.

Maybe try a more upmarket area. If your living downtown it's full of clowns.

So the message from some of you seems to be 'forget about being happy, just make as much money as you can'.
Not everyone subscribes to that philosophy.
The O&G workers have to spend 50% of their time at sea with nothing but a censored copy of Thai playboy and the communal copy of readers wives to keep them company, add that to the fear of dropping the soap in the showers and you can understand that they will get grumpy. Please have some sympathy for them.
Sure but they make more money in a day than the Pikeys make in a month and then get a month's paid leave.

A good selection of deli meats. Turkey!!
Big C Extra in Pattaya is OK. Completely different from a regular Big C. IMHO.
Except for the huge piles of rotting chicken and pork as you walk in. Good deli section though.

The lower middle class will purchase at Robinson's and the upper working class at Big C. The one stuck in the middle will choose Tesco where you can purchase the same pair of shorts that half of Pattaya wears for 79 baht.

Renting out property anywhere in the World is a PITA. and Thailand is no different.
Your properties will get trashed and you will spend your time chasing rent and people doing moonlight flits.
Keep your money in the bank and use the interest to support your expenses.
Changing your USD into GBP at this point wouldn't be a bad idea if you don't need to use it for a year or so.

100 baht-just enough to get me a "decent" 99 baht breakfast in Pattaya. Slightly more in Bangkok.
Julia you won't get any change in Konying's place unless you are prepared to wait at least half an hour.

Freud linked snakes with penises that why most women are afraid of snakes.
Snake means the number one in the lottery so if she can remember how many snakes she has the two lucky numbers.

You can buy what you want but you'll need someone speaking English on the other end I presume.

Exactly I carry 99 baht for a breakfast and call Mrs.ATF to do her phone banking thing if I need to buy anything or send her to buy it in the first place.

What's wrong with the lot of you? You sound like a Persil advert. Get a life or a woman to wash your clothes.
Well, it would appear that yer atypical male chauvinist pig is alive and well and residing in Thailand. Each to is own mate. Each to his own.
Women were invented for cleaning. Next thing you'll be telling me is you clean your house, wash your dishes and do your own ironing too
BTW underwear was invented to stop your nuts reaching your knees. I bet you have a fine pair of swingers

Sounds like you're living around the Chicken Crossroads / Nern Plab Waan area. There are a lot of bums in that area that drink themselves stupid everyday.
I would move to somewhere around the lake if I was you. The bar scene is different up there with a healthier atmosphere.
There are more families around there and a lot of expats have lived there for a long time also you have plenty of space to walk, cycle etc.
