  1. Buying an android Chinese tablet computer marked Samsung for 2000THB from a Burma man in Panthip plaza. Pantip plaza seems to have many charming Burmese who speak perfect English. (I wonder whether they have work permits?). Some of them may be ok but my experience has only been rivaled by the Chinese in Sim Lim in Singapore. He and his girlfriend have a beautiful display on the ground floor. Never having owned a tablet I bought one and it was perfect. Then I went back to buy a second one. Would I prefer a white one? Yes. So he ran upstairs to one of his other 2 shops and came back with a white one which seemed ok but when i tried it in my hotel i could not install anything at all from wifi. So I took it back and again he ran upstairs and came back with another white one.So I took it back to my hotel and again I could not install anything.from wifi So I went back again ..

So again he ran upstairs and came back with yet another white tablet and a free keyboard. He and his girlfriend then demonstrated using one of their mobile telephones as a wifi source that you could install from wifi. So I took that one back to my hotel. It sort of worked but then i discovered that the touch screen worked only from time to time. It seems that he has a stock of faulty tablets which he tries to unload on stupid foreigners. This seemed to be as good as it would get so I stopped. I broke my golden rule when buying electronics. Always buy an unopened box and ask for an invoice. I had none of this. Don't allow anybody to open a box remove the item and put a sticker on it for warranty. It is too easy to substitute a faulty item. Warranty is hardly worth having anyway since you will not be given a new item. You get back another item which had a different fault on it and which has been repaired and may break again.

  2. my understanding of thai land laws is that anybody could squat an unoccupied piece of land and register it as a tor tor sam.

after 10 years the tor tor sam could be concverted to a chanut.

in the case of beach front land it was usual to acquire a length, say 100 metres of sea shore, and that extended inland for a long way.

that is why you see all those long slim condos at right angles to the sea in pattaya.

what may have happened is that the gypsies did something like this but then urgently needed some money

and so used the chanut as collateral. then of course they did not pay the interest

and so the debt multiplied as it was traded around.

so the present owner probably bought the land from a bank as a foreclosure.

just a guess but this happens a lot in cambodia.

  3. SunnyJim5. I see, so it is only the well off who should be allowed to retire to Thailand.

There are plenty of working class people from Western countries who would be an asset to Thailand.

It is cheap for them to live here, and there are many other positives, they can offer a lot to Thailands economy.

working class people from Western countries are well off.

or is it that they cease to be working class when they become well off.

    up the workers.

  4. I always carry an 18 watt fluorescent lamp (equivalent to 100 watts) to replace the dim bulb in the bedside lamp so I can read. The last hotel we stayed at In Krabi over Xmas had the bedside lamp by the TV. I had to pull the bed out from the wall to locate a receptacle and move a chair by the bed to get a reading lamp.

I use a kindle for all my reading, don't need any lamps now.clap2.gif

what is so special about this kindle that i keep hearing about??

it seems an expensive way of dong things at a minimum price of $120.

nowadays you can read a book off any screen be it your telephone or your tablet or your laptop or your pc.

there are many applications that can do this and and many free .epub files of just about any book available.

  5. 1 terrabyte = 1000 gigabytes. 1 gigabyte = 1000 megabytes. 1 megabyte = 1,000,000 bytes. 1 byte = 8 bits.

i think that you mean at least 1 terrabyte of storage like a hard drive.

memory is usually at least 1 gigabyte if not 2 or even 4 gigabytes.

i concur that any asus or acer would be good.

i concur that linux is good. i prefer debian linux.

it is confusing because tablets and telephones running android quote memory and storage as the same thing.

  6. My past gf's brother was a real scumbag and became a monk... So I should respect him??? Not a chance !!! Later he dropped out of monk hood and returned to being the same POS.

I do notice that a lot of them have tattoos, frequently hinting at mis-spent pre-monkhood past. I often wonder if some of these guys will remain monks after the statute of limitations (or just local citizen & police memory of the offences they were being sought for) has expired.

i don't know if this happens in thailand but in cambodia a convicted criminal has the option to avoid jail by becoming a monk.

  7. a long time ago i did this journey by bus. 2 weeks later the hmong tribesmen attacked the same bus and every body was killed. of course they need soldiers on the road for protection. many years before that tourists were forbidden to use the bus and could only travel by air from vientiane to luang prabang. i replied i had a ticket to australia which used to be a good country so why would i want to fly to luang prabang. years before that a fellow swedish traveller told me that he had done the trip by lorry and been fired upon with distant ak47's. he and his driver returned fire but they were out of range. luang prabang is an interesting place. the only decent hotel was the rajah hotel which served an excellent breakfast. unfortunately it suffered from group bookings of thai people on package tours out of bangkok as mentioned in this thread and we were always and eventually threatened with eviction. do it you will not regret it. oh and don't forget vang viene half way with the runway used by air america to smuggle heroin, as in the book/film, now full of drunken backpackers.

try to take the government bus and not the tourist bus. it is cheaper and better even though it smells of fish and ice as the locals take their produce to market.

  8. But be a little sympathetic about the agent orange. The ill health is probably indicative of their own poisoning. And were never informed of the consequences. It is the "back room" boys who should be held accountable for that slow genocide!

i am told that agent orange babies are now very common in cambodia. the babies are born very white, with big heads, with a lot of body hair and suffer from many complaints, of which they slowly die.

it will continue for several generations. any family member but especially the males can be carrying deformed genes and so the suffering continues.

  9. Sounds like suicide. He was able to cut his throat and throw away the glass and knife afterwards. w00t.gif RIP. coffee1.gif

And no traces.....please Google how many foreigners got killed in Udon Thani.Scary.bah.gif

a long time ago i had a girlfriend from udon thani.

she wanted to marry me. then i discovered that her family owed 200,000 THB and that i was expected to pay this off.

i discused the matter with another farang and his girlfriend who were in a nearby house.

i should not have done this. she told my girlfriend who then refused to sleep with me and threatened to have me killed.

it was late afternoon and too late to catch a bus out of the area so i stayed in the family house.

i left the lght on all night, put pillows in the bed, and sat in an armchair facing the door but hidden.

in the morning i just left. she later finished me and i believe is still working in pattaya looking for a victim.

the father was peaceful enough but you never can tell.

it is always money and lots of it.

falungs do get attacked if the money is not paid.
