When I entered 3 days ago, I was granted permission to stay for a year. According to what Sheryl wrote, I should have no problem re-entering during that year.

What is the usual procedure for getting a re-entry permit for use during the second year? Do people wait until after the first 12 months has passed before buying a re-entry permit, or do they buy it before the 12 months has passed? Either way, why couldn't I do the same thing?

You can get a reentry permit anytime during your extension of stay but must use it before your extension of stay expires.  Use it or it will expires.

As said you only need single entry but will not be able to extend immediately as extension are normally only allowed during the last 30 (or at some places/including Bangkok) 45 days early - that single entry will be for 90 days so you will have to want 45 to 60 days.

For the visa at HCMC you do not need financials but will require original marriage certificate along with signed copy, signed copies of her paperwork and a short letter from her asking for the visa to be issued to you.  You probably know all this but would not want you to get there missing something - there are good threads on HCMC/Savannakhet non immigrant O visa issue you can use for information.

I am confused about one thing you said.  "original marriage certificate along with signed copy,"  Who signs it or is it both of us?  I understood you needed a copy and the original but did not know about a signed copy?  Please advise.

Have you been to Thailand before?   Do you plan to take a few trips outside Thailand?  Settling in a new area or travelling around a bit?

I actually had a friend who got a multiple non-O so that he could better time when he would begin the 1 year extension (and set the anniversary date for that).  Because you can start the 1 year extension within the last 30-45 days of any of the non-o entries that you do.  Also it acts as a hedge against a difficult local immigration office.

So especially it is your first time settling in, I would get the multiple non-o.  The extra $100 USD gives you more overall flexibility.

I have lived in Thailand now for 13 years.

If you reenter Thailand on a visa exempt do you not need to show a return airline ticket?  Plus the money requirement?

Yea, in case of multi entry OA then a re-entry permit is not needed "during the one year validity date of that OA."

But if a person is already past that first year validity date and now in his second year because he left and reentered just before the validity expired then if he left without a reentry permit that would kill off the OA/permission to stay date.

And if the person was really on a Retirement Extension of Stay based off that old OA visa which has expired, if he leaves Thailand without getting a reentry permit then the old OA visa/current extension of stay is killed off.  Like me...I originally entered on a OA in 2008 and now on my 11th Retirement Extension of Stay good under late 2020.  But if I was to exit Thailand tomorrow without a reentery permit to keep my extension of stay alive, I would need to start all over in getting a new Visa.  Like a Non-O visa outside of Thailand...or enter on an Exempt entry and start the process to convert that Exempt entry to a Non-O within Thailand.

For No. 5, I have no idea what is meant. Is is a standard form from the US Consulate stating I am a US citizen? Never heard of such a document so I am clueless.

That is an form that just says you are an American Citizen signed by you and the Embassy.  You would think having a American Passport you wouldn't need it.  But you do. It also cost you $50.

Edit:  I don't know who screws us more than Embassy or the Thai Immigrations.

This letter states that the wife and children must also have this insurance.  You know that is not correct.  Immigrations can not tell a Thai wife she must be included on the policy.  Anyway if they are on a O visa fr marriage they wouldn't be required to have insurance.  This just show how fake this letter is.

Why would someone who live here need to purchase insurance online?  They live here and maybe for years.  It not hard to get it.  You would not have to go online.  But someone  who is in the US would need to get it online.  It is not that hard to understand.

Now all you guys running out scared to change from OA to O are probably going to ruin it for all of us who are on the O from the beginning. All we can do is just hope the old time O holding expats are grandfathered and not subjected making them react and slap everyone.

I don't give a damn.  I am thinking of myself.  Not you.

You could also leave and come back on visa exempt for 30 days and apply for a 90-day Non O visa in Thailand using 800k in bank, then get 1 year extension after that. You may need to show that the 800k came from abroad. Best to ask Ubonjoe. I did my 90-day Non O & 1 year extension in Jomtien.

I would like to do that.  But if I fly back to Don Mueang will I have a problem getting the visa exempt with some IO saying you been in Thailand too long to be a tourist.

Your question is undoubtedly inspired by the new health insurance requirement when applying for a Non Imm OA Visa.  Although there is much confusion and contradictory posts on the subject, most probably that requirement will NOT be applicable for extensions of stay.  Hence there is no need to change your Visa category, as the requirements for extension of stay for O and OA are same.

I want to agree with you.  However, no one here stamps my visa but the IO.  Today I called my IO and they said what others said here that I would have to get insurance to extend again.
