  1. 70,000 is HUGE upcountry!

I pull out a 1000 baht bill and its like i pulled a gold bar out of my pocket

I agree with NK, and as Bendix may now know from another topic where I posted, if you want to or are forced to live on a budget you definitely can - outside of metro areas.

The basics of food, housing and a maid were, for me, baht 3,500 per month. Three or four times a month I would buy an internet access card for 90 baht that gave me unlimited dial-up access for 7 days. This gave me about baht 1,500/month to spend wildly on eating out or movies with my friend. Eating our fill out at nice places (not western hotels, however) might cost between 120 baht and 250 baht total for the two of us. Like Bendix's friend we did not drink, so no expense there. Some health related expenses and gas for the car brought my monthy total to about B7,000 (As you see, this makes Bendix's friend's B25,000 expenditure look much more plausable)

Admittedly this took serious searching and luck and a willingness to be outside of the city and the knowledge that I had the absolute need to fit within such a budget. I doubt many farang have found it possible to live this frugally and yet live well, but this shows you one extreme possiblility.

Re BKK, I would put the housing cost right up there almost on par with other cities. Ok, you can get a cheap studio (nowhere near a BTS station or where you want to be) for B4,000 monthly, but a real apt, decently located I would guess at an absolute minimum of B25,000 these days and most guys reading this are probably paying over B35,000 monthly (how many over B100,000?). Restaurants can be very inexpensive however (or expensive, depending on your tastes).

  2. Hi guys,

Whilst were on the topic I wonder if anyone could offer some advice for me - either with the ghee or another product.  I have a patch of skin on my chin that is always prone to spots.  So over the years I have always used alot of chemical products on it.  I have noticed recently that this patch of skin in particular is really wrinkly like ive been smoking 40 a day for 20 years (ok I social smoke).  I wonder if this is permanent damage or if there is anything I can do to it to make it look a bit better, it is also quite red.

Any suggestions for quick fix bad skin remedies would be greatly appreciated.  Btw, I would try the ghee but not sure if I would get any in Samui.  thanks.

But I'm sure good butter is available. :o It isn't that hard to make.

For anything like this you should really see an ayurvedic doctor. I know there was a farang (British maybe) lady trained in Ayurveda on Phuket a couple of years ago (she seemed very nice and knowledgeable), but not sure of Samui, but I did hear some talk of maybe something there.

Ghee can certainly be tried, but really try to see someone as soon as you can as there will probably be numerous things you should do internally. This is just one manifestation of some type of improper digestion.

I see so many posts in the health section and I think "Oh how I would love to see some "real" AV clinics with vaidyas from India open in Thailand" There is so much that ayurveda can cure not to mention its' even better preventive abilities. Oh well, change takes time.

  3. Thanks so much for your information on Ghee.  I have learned all kinds of information on natural herbal products for skin and health, but Ghee is completely new for me.

I'm definitely going to try it.  Do you know where we can find ready-made Ghee in BKK?  I guess at the Indian Market, but does anyone know a good place to shop?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Kat,

I might have seen 'Purity Farms Ghee' in the import grocery store accross from the Emporium or in one of the nicer grocery stores in the Sukhumvit area (but that may have been as much as 3 years ago) PFG is very good quality and organic

At the Indian markets you will most likely only find the tins of ghee from Australia or NZ. Or maybe from India, but do not buy ghee from India. Most of it is adulterated with buffalo ghee at best and buffalo ghee has very different ayurvedic properties.

The ghee from down under may be old and being in a tin is not great for the ghee either. Glass jar is best for storage.

Maybe just start with a pound or two of butter and try making your own ghee. It is not that hard as long as you keep from burning it.

Bring the butter to a boil, then as the boiling becomes less keep lowering the flame. When you see the solids on the bottem become even a little light golden turn off the flame. Once the moisture is gone the temp of the ghee rises like a rocket and the milk solids will be black in a split second. The only other aspect is seperating the solids (some on top and some on bottom) from the oil and that is relatively easy. There are many ways, so look for suggestions on the web or ask a friend to come by who has done it before.

    Good luck.

  4. So this sounds interesting. Do you make your own ghee? Or are there some products you buy based on this? My husband is full of moles and my 2 youngest daughters are now starting to have more and more pop out all the time.

I have used vitamin e oil in the past to remove surgical scars with great results, but never tried this.

My 2 cents worth on make up, foundation only for special evenings out. Everyday, light wisp of powder blush and eye make up.

I do make my own ghee from organic butter. However it is fine to just buy pure organic butter ghee in a shop, if you can find it. Make sure it is butter ghee as some shoddy operators are selling something they call "vegetable ghee". There is no such thing as "vegetable ghee". It is a made-up concept for selling vegetable oil or margarine at a high price. Ghee is a sanskrit word and only refers to the oil that can be derived from milk.

If you wish to make your own ghee research it thoroughly on the internet or in a book before attempting to make it. The key is in being sure not to burn the milk solids on the bottom of the pan toward the end of the process. This can happen quite suddenly. Preferably use a good quality, thick bottomed pot and definitely no aluminum or teflon interior. The ghee would take on some of their toxic nature. For the same reason, especially when you are wanting to use the ghee for its medicinal qualities, I recommend organic or as close to that as you can get.

On a side note, I wonder if this post or part of it should be moved to the health area (and maybe retitled) as it seemed to have quickly taken on a health tone from the beginning and stuck with it. Or should we just start a new one?

Ice? What do you think? You originated this post. Or is this strictly a moderator decision. Not sure how this works, but have seen it done in similar instances.

  5. :o Thanks! I also see that you have a nice new avatar. Cute heart pupil.

Re ghee: Not sure what effect it has on freckles, but no harm trying, as it will have an overall beneficial effect on the skin and complexion.

I have not done a deep study on this subject, but I will suggest some alternatives for general application (for things like moles just apply and leave on):

After washing and drying the face (or wherever you wish to apply), put a small quantity of ghee in your hands and massage it in. Leave it on for 20 minutes or however long you have time for. Gently wash off the surface residue with a nice natural soap. Rinse, dry and go about your normal day.

Ghee can also be applied before bed and left on overnight if you do not mind getting some oil residue on your sheets or pillow cover. As above, you could also wash off a little of the surface residue before getting in bed.

Ghee, BTW, applied at night on the head and/or feet promotes good sleep. I used to put it on my feet, then go to bed with some socks on. Worked nicely and improved the texture of my feet as a bonus. :D

    Hey Ice, that's great!

I hope it is also not unwelcome for me to post here.  I just ran across this thread when doing a search in TV on ayur.

In addition to turmeric, one other miraculous and simple substance for the skin is ghee (clarified butter).  It is very cleansing and healing and gives the skin a very healthy glow.  A quick search on skin, ghee, health will yield up lots of interesting info.

When I was married, my wife had a mole on her face that went quickly from the size of a small pea to the size of a quarter.  It was rough and multicolored and a doctor friend told her she should have a biopsy as it might likely be cancerous.

Then another friend told us that he had had a nasty mole and an ayurvedic doctor told him to gently apply a small amount of ghee at least 3 times a day.  He said in 3 weeks the mole was gone without a trace.  Despite being strong believers in ayurveda we were skeptical, to say the least, that simple ghee would do this.  However my wife decided to give it a try as it would be a while before she could get an appointment for the biopsy.

We watched in amazement over the next three weeks as the mole shrank and finally disappeared with no sign that it had ever been there.  No scar, nothing.  And she had had the original mole for more than a decade.  To make a long story short, 6 months later I thought why not try it on a cyst I had had on my eyelid for years.  Also, gone within 3 weeks.  And finally a friend with a large, marble sized cyst on his back.  Also gone in weeks!

Ghee helps get rid of all kinds of complexion problems and wrinkling (more effective than botox, very easy, inexpensive and only positive results)and helps bring out facial beauty better than cosmetics IMHO.  Including both ghee and turmeric in your diet as well is also very good for the skin.

Of course there is more to maintaing youthful beauty and great looks than just ghee and turmeric and I know I have oversimplified it here.  Healthy eating habits and lifestyle and things like meditation all contribute wonderfully and easily to ones natural beauty.  Do a search, check it out and enjoy the results.

Sorry if I went on a bit here.  :D

    Great advice thankyou :D

Of course you're welcome on this forum as long as you behave yourself (Boo's words :D ) This ghee sounds amazing. I have a few freckles that appear when I am over exposed to the sun on my cheeks so I may just try that. You have been very helpful thankyou and I hope I see you contribute more often in the ladies forum.

By the way I like you're avatar, it's very pretty.

  6. I prefer to overpay my maid. She gets 4400 a month for coming three days a week, and working 4 hours each time. She cleans, washes, irons and does odds and sods.

In return for overpaying her, I know I can trust her implicitly, even to the point of giving her 20,000 the other week to go and pay a few bills which needed to be taken care of. She's a gem.

The idea of paying a maid 1000 a month as a previous poster did is, imho, bordering on taking the p**s. Just because you can get away with it doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. I couldn't live with myself if I ordered in a pizza a few beers and I gave the maid more than a month's salary to pay the delivery guy for a junk food binge. It just aint right.

    Hi Bendix,

I would like to put the situation in perspective and assure you that I was not being some sort of heartless taskmaster. At that time my health was not in the best shape, nor were my finances (though in many ways good fortune was smiling on me as you will soon see).

I had a Thai friend who I had helped in the past with her health who came up with me to CM to help me out. She found great housing for me as well as the maid. I was completely new to the CNX area and did not know anything about the cost of living there except that it could be massively cheaper than BKK for example.

Also for perspective, you should know that my monthly rent for a very nice, fully furnished, 2 story, 2 bdr, 2 bath townhouse (with telephone, but no aircon) was baht 1,000/ month (1 month deposit and no contract). As I said everything was arranged by my Thai friend who knew I was on a tight budget. She found the place (and this was not the only one of this quality for 1,000 baht/month in the same area. She put out the word for the maid through friends and neighbors and what salary I could pay (again multiple applicants).

The maid always felt like she was family, knew my finances were tight and never felt taken advantage of (nor did I even have a hint that this was not an appropriate wage for the situation and area). My place was close to her home and closer to her son's school. If she had some pressing need to miss a day or change her schedule, she knew that I was flexible and she could do it as long as she let me know. It was a mutually beneficial relationship and for her the big factor might have been just to have a positive place for herself and her son to be to get away from a husband who tended toward being wasted, abusive and at home most of the day if he did not have to report to the army base. As Loong said, 'wages are all relative'. And maybe wgaes are not always defined in cash.

Personally I have mostly been a volunteer my entire adult life. I often find that people regard respect and other such intangibles more highly than cash. I have lived in rural areas where the community would be offended and very annoyed at the farang if he were to pay for something beyond what they thought was reasonable.

As I said earlier you should give what you can, within accepted standards.

To answer Loong, she was Thai and lived within a 5 minute scooter ride of me. Her husband was in the army.

Yes, as significant as 6-700%! But since the maid is so happy with it, u may as well try baht 800.

Have a feeling we are talking about the same place. My street name spelling was Ratchawitee which is the same as Rajwithi.

As for seeker108 you are asking for an optomologist. There is a private clinic building inside the Suan Dork hospital grounds that has specialists. The optomologist recommended to me and considered the best in Chiangmai can be contacted below. He is a University medical ajarn. He also has a private clinic open at 5:30pm. Contact him by e-mail to see where to see him.

Thanks Tywais. I'll get on to him in the next day or so. I was thinking that it might require a specialist.

  9. Right you are Pauly, a great wealth of information from such helpful neighbors on this site.

Do any of you gents happen to have phone numbers or know if they have email addresses or websites so I can start getting more info before I get back?

    Thanks,

    Seeker

  10. Hi Pauly,

Glad you started this topic. I also will be looking for a good optician when I get in town. My doc here says I should have a special exam that tests to see if any blood capillaries have been damaged by my high blood sugar. Very expensive for this exam in the states.

You may want to have this checked as well.

If anyone knows of an eye doc who does this please let us know.

    Thanks

  11. Seeker,

In searching the site for info, I came across this interesting thread about maids, maybe you'll find it helpful.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/maid.0.html

Thanks. I particularly like what it says at the end about giving them respect and making them feel welcome. I think that if you treat a person well and pay them to the best of your ability within an accepted framework then it will be a lasting and mutually enjoyable relationship.

I think finding any employee through some reference is the best way as there is then more of a connection there.

  12. It looks to me like there is still a significant amount of moisture heading towards Northern Thailand.  I'm no expert though.

    http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/sat-bin/display...MOSAIC_SCALE=15

Hmm, right you are. It looks different from 12 hours ago in that even though the core of the storm is passing further north, it sure is drawing in a lot of moisture from the southwest that will be dragged across Thailand. I guess the jury is still out on how much rain CM and upriver will get. :o

    Good luck!

  13. You are asking quite a few complex questions. Fiber is used as a transport medium in a variety of applications. I imagine there is quite a lot of fiber already in place in Thailand?

However I think you are specifically asking about FTTH, fiber to the home? While it would be great to have a 5/15/30 Mbps link to your home this still would not solve the "bottleneck" here which is international internet conenctions.

I think CMT's question encompasses both the local infrastructure and bringing the fibre optic trunk(s) in. I remember looking into this 2 years ago and finding out that there was a major fibre optic cable passing right by Thailand that could easily be accessed. The question is not one of technological capability or even cost.

Obviously the question is more a question of Mr. T not having a boy bright enough to figure out how to do this in a way that would make him more money than it would lose him. He obviously has a major interest in the current telecommunications setup in Thailand and does not want a change that will result in diminishing his income.

I can only imagine that Mr. T will soon grow tired of losing face in Thailand being very backward in the rapidly developing world of clear, high-speed telecommunications while countries like India have made incredible leaps forward in the past 5 years.

Especially when he realizes that it is losing him personally and the country in general incredible sums of income. Good, clear, fast, inexpensive communication channels are the basis of solid business development. Despite lower individual costs, I should think that his overall income would explode with the huge demand that would appear overnight for this kind of product - as would the GNP for the country as a whole.

    :o

  14. Wages are all relative.

Hmm. I guess so. I may be sorry that I looked at this thread, as prior to this I was thinking that 1,000 baht per month was a decent wage to pay a mostly full-time (6 hours per day 6 days per week) maid/cook outside of the metro areas. That was what I was paying two years ago. The maid was arranged by a Thai friend and the maid seemed very happy with the arrangement and the job (and we had interviewed several other potential employees, all of them knowing the salary). Of course it included meals that she was there for (even for her 12 yr old son who was often there for lunch on non-school days).

She was middle aged, not young and inexperienced and spoke a little English as she had worked for farangs before.

So she was happily working for the equivalent of 50 baht per 8 hour day (about 1,200/month) plus food and she was a good honest, hard working employee. Having been in India this wage did not surprise me. Also, a friend in Bkk was paying his full-time, live-in nanny/maid/cook 3,000 per month, so again, what I was paying seemed on par considering the difference between BKK and 20 km outside of CM. Have wages gone up significantly in the past 2 years or was I just in an unusual area?

    :o

  15. Sorry to butt in but do you have any idea of the size of the rooms at Bann Thai?

No but im guessing that they are not terribly big, are they just basically a hotel room with a bed, a locker, a wardrobe and a bathroom or do they have a living area etc, with the pool and internet access i could overlook a small room but dont be shy if you have experienced these rooms please share the info, also how is the internet access...good....bad...terrible

I have been folowing all of these threads about apts in CM for the past few months with keen interest.

Baan Thai seems the best for my short-term needs so far, because of location, price and having (relatively) high-speed internet access available. Two others are PT apartments and Huaykaew Residence. These 3 also are all said to be somewhat new, which is nice as well.

I would love to know the difference in general between what is being called a residence, a serviced apartment and a condo. Is it just semantics or is there an actual difference?

More importantly I would like to know if anyone could give a good comparison between the 3 places or between any two of them.

Finally does anyone know if they have web sites? I saw this on an earlier thread for PT; http://www.chiangmai-thai.com/pt_apartment.htm , but nothing for the other two.

Strongest typhoon in 30 years hits Hainan Island

The strongest typhoon hit southern China's Hainan island in more than 30 years early Monday, sending residents scattering for shelter and endangering crops of rice, rubber and bananas.

Typhoon Damrey made landfall north of Hainan's Wanning City Sunday with wind speeds of up to 198 kph, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

It was the island's strongest typhoon since September 1973.

Also, it looks to me like it will be affecting CM sooner than Wednesday.

  17. Not many www.s in that price range. You could try Lai Thai , maybe a bit above that price they have a website, just google it. Or Top North, I believe they have 2 places around Monnmuang Soi 2. Or Ban Jongcome in Tapae Soi 4 is 450Bt. I don't think the last 2 on the web.

You might try to contact Khun Kan (pronounced more like gun) at Northern Trek and Travel. She probably knows many of the places that are not on the internet.

Her rates may not be cheaper than the cheapest internet rates, but she can advise you on which place to get the most bang for your buck on the kind of place you want. Even she does not list the really inexpensive places on her site, but she recently told me that for October she could easily get me a nice aircon room near Thapae for 250 if I wanted. Of course, November is more.
