Thanks for the link etc, the place looks really good but it doesn't mention anything about laser treatment. Do you know if they do it or anywhere that does?
Thanks again
C1
I do not recall them using laser for drilling at all, though they may use it for whitening or hardening. However I have not been in to see them for about 2 and 1/2 years, so not sure what they may be doing now. I would suggest emailing or calling them. Also Dentaland is highly recommeded http://www.chiangmainews.com/dentaland/ . Fortune dental clinic may be another possibility http://www.fortunedentalclinic-thailand.com/

Just as a backup it might be a good idea to get Google Talk (which is only usable for free comp to comp telephony). The phone companies may feel less threatened by this than Skype since you can not call a telephone with this (at least not yet).
The clarity with this is as good and often better than Skype. However a broadband connection may be more necessary for GT to function than for Skype.
To get Google Talk you must first have a Gmail account ( no big deal, since it is free and IMHO one of the best email providers going). However the hitch is that while they are still in their "beta" stage, to get an account, you need someone who already has a Gmail account to send you an invitation (also no big deal).
Ok, I really do not want 1,000 requests for an invitation, but if you really want GT and you do not know anyone else and can not find anyone else with a gmail account then go ahead and email me.

Thanks lomatopo that's a great help.
I had a root filling when I was 17 done by some dodgy butcher who called themselves a dentist, hurt like h3ll...........haven't been back since
I need afew fillings replaced and a new one which will need the tooth building up aswell.
Have you or anyone else experienced laser dental treatment ? anybody got feedback?
When I lived in BKK I never found a dental clinic I was completely happy with (does not mean there aren't any good ones, but the ones I checked out all seemed impersonal and pricey or incompetent)
If you have any desire to visit Chiang Mai, then combine that visit with gettting your dental work done. Grace Dental Clinic is one of the finest, most modern dental clinics in the world, warm and friendly a great group of dentists and very reasonably priced IMHO. http://www.gracedentalclinic.com/
There are also some other clinics in CM that some others also swear by, but most seem to prefer Grace. You can see more by doing a search on dentist in the CM forum.

Then there are all of the big stores scatterd around town; Lotus Tesco, Central, Robinsons, Carrefour, plus a couple of huge malls. Have I forgotten any? Where you go depends on where you live and your personal preferences. Have no fear,CM is a very large modern city. The only thing different is that on some things (not cars or most imported goods) prices will be much cheaper than back home or even BKK. Bargains abound if you know where to look.
Here is a link to Carrefour, just to give you one example: http://www.carrefour.co.th/english/location19.php

No longer being a permanent resident I assume that the Farang population of Mae Rim has grown significantly since I got married there and the entire Farang population could be counted on the fingers of one hand.
At one time the late Mad Mike ran a public swimming pool of sorts just south of town and further south is the "Sports Club" but I have never been inside to see it.
Perhaps if you can sneek into the Four Seasons Hotel they might have some gym and spa facilties. There are great bicycle routes around the town and going out past the Prem School in Tambon Sansai heading north towards Mae Tang. Other than that, as the previous poster noted, it is a fairly quiet bedroom community of farmers and government bureaucrats.
Four seasons certainly has but not sure if available, but definitely would be pricey if available. The resort/club on the main road (something Valley) had one. Their was some kind of private club a bit south of that and a couple of blocks in to the east. Then there is the 7000 stadium which is not too far south also.

A lady friend at work has cancer, she has read somewhere that there is a root from the north east Thailand beeing used for cancer treatment in the hospital in Udon Thani.
I would very much like to help her if possible, has anyone heard about this treatment ?
I don't know about this root, but see the post that I just made in the liver damage topic. This doctor and system of natural medicines can be helpful here also.
http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=44614
In the mean time she should stay away from sugar and high fat foods. Especially sugar at this stage.
This is from Hari Sharma one of the authors of "The Answer to Cancer"
"In the area of diet, high-fat foods can increase the chances of getting cancer (e.g. colon, rectum, prostate, endometrium). Cancer develops frequently if you eat too many smoked, cured, pickled, or charred foods. Some sources are also linking sugar to cancer. Cancer cells thrive on sugar. By using more sugar, the cancer cells produce lactic acid, which seems to help the body produce new blood vessels. This, in turn, helps the cancer to spread. Sugar also weakens the immune system and increases insulin, which causes cells to reproduce quickly. This can contribute to more rapid growth of the cancer."
http://www.mapi.com/en/newsletters/cancer_prevention.html
This book gives most importance to prevention but the knowledge is also good for those who already have cancer.

Hi Syd,
This kind of news is no joke and it will leave you reeling for a bit (been there myself with a different disease, where the doctors told me that I would very possibly be dead that same day if I did not allow them to admit me to the hospital). Unfortunately modern western medicine has lost touch with its roots in healing. I did not buy into their mindset and I am still going strong 5 years later.
As Udon said you can prove the doctors wrong. Depends on what you feel about the whole thing and if you are really willing to get through this and continuue on with this life. I'll be happy to point you in the direction that helped me so far, but you first need to make the decision yourself that you want to do what it takes to beat this to keep your lady and family happy. Drying out right away would probably be a good start.
The ancient Indian system of health care (ayur veda) is really experiencing a great resurgence in the past 5 to 10 years. If you can find a real good practioner (not some boutique spa) you can get great results. I know of a few ayurvedic doctors in India that are real good (and there may very well be thousands of others that I do not personally know). One of them was just brought to BKK last week. Unfortunately he was only able to be there for 3 or 4 days as he had to get back to his clinic in Delhi. He will no doubt return again as many could not get appointments despite the fact that he saw 70 patients each day. Anyway one of the specialties of his family tradition is curing liver problems and if anyone can help restore your liver I would say it would be him.
As you should not wait for his uncertain return to BKK, email or PM me and I will be happy to give you his contact details (this also goes for anyone else with a serious need and a desire to go for a more natural, traditional cure of some serious problem). There may also be a source of some of the ayurvedic medicines that you need, right in BKK right away (I will check into this with friends there).
As an aside, there is also a branch of traditional Thai healthcare that comes directly from this (called similarly ayuraveda), but I do not know of any practioners there that I can recommend as of yet.
When I had my life threatening problem I went and saw this same doctor and got an apartment near his family home in Hyderabad for two months of daily treatments until enough of a cure occured so that I could function normally. His father and brother and one sister are all ayurvedic doctors and he was down there most of the time, at that time, for family reasons as well. Anyway get in touch with me if you want to do something with this. It may not be necessary to go to India, though with your liver as far along as you indicate this might be best. However he may say that you can just take treatments and medicines there in Thailand.
All the best, whatever you decide

I thought you only needed a triband-capable phone when in North America? Just get your phones unlocked, about 150 baht, and a new SIM card. DTAC seem ok. I think Orange were doing a deal recently for a 200 baht SIM and 700 baht's worth of free calls. Orange don't have great coverage out here though. When calling the States, prefix with 009 then the 1 and drop the 0 on the area code.
No, the normal American system phones don't work in Thailand and I don't think any except maybe the tri or quad phones take sims cards in any case.
I seem to recall that in BKK you could get a used phone even cheaper than $15, if u did not mind it being a bit larger than the newer style. Not sure about in Chiang Mai. Never had to shop for one as my panasonic mobile from India was on the same system as Thailand.
I used all 3 companies and found AIS to be the best reception, by far. Orange was a distant 3rd place for most of my areas.

Cheers CV, hanging around just now as a matter of fact;
I'd also like to give a nod to CM CityLife's website- good local Chiang mai resource (ok and I like K Pim too, nice gal)
baht&sold - Nice layout on your site. Easy to search by region and category. City life is also good. I am really surprised at how little classifieds still seem to be used in CM. Or am I mistaken?

A few more thougts. You can be pretty far out of town and still not need a car because there are lots of red or yellow sawngthaews going pretty far afield (I lived 25 km north, up in Mae Rim and we had regular service up there). That having been said, my preference will be to be in closer when I come back. I also happen to like the Nimmanhaemin and Huay kaew area because of restaurants and shopping, but maybe a bit outside the main road areas.
I will probably still have a car or a pickup (pickups are much cheaper and very handy for hauling supplies) for those times when I really feel the need for some independent travel (BTW, I would buy only a diesel engine vehicle so that I could run it on straight veggie oil (maybe I or someone else will start a topic on this)). But when you are not far from the moat then public transportation is convenient, cheap and short duration to most areas of CM and that is what I would mostly use.
To KerryK
Some of my favorite restaurants there are Khun Churn (Excellent Veggie Thai buffet on soi 7), Amari Rincome (nice western buffet), and on soi 6 (or is it 4?) about 100 meters in on the left there was a nice organic restaurant (sorry, can't remember the name; someone else know the name and soi?) Also check out the first pinned topic in the CM forum "Good Places To Eat In Chiang Mai".

What is it about Vonage that you prefer over Skype? Also does it lack anything that Skype has?
I have never tried it.
-
IMHO I would not suggest it (except very short term) as almost everywhere inside tends to be very congested and there is more pollution. But maybe someone knows of some nice area inside?
I think you are better to find some part of town that suits your fancy where maybe you have easy access to public transportation for when you, or your wife, don't feel like driving. Even inside the moat you will not be near everything you want. You also might find that you prefer to live where it is a bit more quiet but not too far from your favorite part of town.
Good hunting!

I have seen a few posts recently where I wanted to refer them to sources of free classified ads (online or print) for the Chiang Mai area.
One of the best free classified, written in Thai, is:
"Sue Klang" a free classified newspaper in Chiang Mai.
SueKlang Newspaper Co., Ltd.
420/5 Chiangmai Land
T. Changklan
Muang Chiang Mai
Telephone: (053) 283634-5
Thanks Mr. Farang
Any chance that they have a web site or at least an email address that you know of?

One additional comment. You can try using Skype even if you only have a good dial-up. Not verified, but I have heard of it working on dial-up (though the quality will drop dramatically, I'm sure). It may be good enough though for free comp to comp calling. Even with broadband I would just try free comp to comp at first and see how it goes.
BTW, their web address is www.skype.com

If you have a broadband (highspeed) Internet connection, download Skype or another Voice Over IP (VOiP) program (Skype is for free) and use your credit card to transfer money to your SkypeOut account. You will need to connect a headset to your computer.
This way you can call Thailand much cheaper than from most landlines. If the person in Thailand has Skype set up on his/her computer, you do not need to use the regular telephone network at all, and you will not pay anything extra for the call, except for what you already pay for your internet connection.
Using regular landlines for international calls makes little sense nowadays.
Absolutely correct Meadish! And so far, I have usually found that a broadband comp to comp connection is far more clear than using regular telephones.
Also with Skype there are some other great features. Voicemail (which you get free for 3 months if you charge up your SkypeOut account through Paypal with $10 or €10). SkypeOut is good for calling anyone you need to who does not have a good internet connection at great rates from anywhere in the world (2 cents per minute to many countries); Storing numbers for instant recall is simple;
For about $3.75 per month you can have a SkypeIn number (which also comes with free voicemail). This means that friends, family or business contacts in other countries who do not have Skype will be able to call you from a telephone to a local (to them) number to reach you and it will automatically go to your computer telephone system in Thailand. They won't even know that you are in Thailand or that the call is not going to a normal telephone.
SkypeIn numbers from the following countries are available: United States, United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Sweden, Finland and Hong Kong S.A.R., China. If you have people calling to you from a country other than these than choose a country to which they can call cheaply.
Additionally Skype has instant online itemization of all calls, even the ones that don't answer and have no charge. Another bonus for paying through PayPal is that you get an additional $2.60 added to your account.
Happy phoning!

Tradesmen would be a great asset with member comments on their proven performance. ie. plumber, house painter, electrician, etc.
Thanks ProThai. Excellent idea!
I know I would refer to that regularly.

In the past I always used Thai, but 2 years ago prices were more reasonable and there were plans for getting some discount (can you still somehow get a discount off of their published fares?)
Anyway, when I get back in a few weeks I guess I'll give Nok a try first, and pay the extra 535 baht (incl tax) just to check out the business class. Then next I will try Air Asia. Both of these airlines seem to be getting pretty good passenger reviews. Here are some examples:

I have seen a few posts recently where I wanted to refer them to sources of free classified ads (online or print) for the Chiang Mai area. I had a list of these about 2 years ago, but not sure where they are now and probably not up to date anyway. Maybe some of you folks currently there could list the ones you are aware of and how good you think they are.
And maybe if the moderators think it appropriate we could eventually pin a list of all such classified sources.
I was also thinking it might be nice to have a pinned list of other useful sources of info as well (links to other local web sites and publications, consulates, good maps of the area, just to mention a few possibilities). I am sure some of you currently in CNX can think of many other useful links that could be posted that would be of great general use. I remember that the Raintree Resource Centre near Nawarat bridge had a welcome booklet with lots of useful info in it and maybe some of that could be in this pinned topic also. It could be called something like "Chiang Mai Resources"?
Ok, here is one to start us off: http://www.chiangmainews.com/classifieds/ . It seems limited and I know there used to be better ones than this.
Ok, let's see where this goes.

How to find a trustable private nurse for a six monthes stay in Thailand ?
Thanks a lot for informations.
Run free classified ads here and in the local online and print magazines in the area you plan to be in. Then get referrences for any replies. You might get replies from other foriegners who know of good nurses as well as from the nurses themselves. This is what I would do for Chiang Mai area, anyway. Where do you plan on staying for 6 months?
In CM area I would think that you would pay Baht 3k to 5k monthly.

Khun Churn on Nimmanhaemin soi 7. As mentioned in other posts/topics this is one of the best buffets for your money. 60 Baht for all u can eat, dessert (simple Thaistyle), herbal drinks and drinking water as well as a fabulous selection of Thai main dishes and salads (almost everything is completely vegetarian). Very clean and well prepared and it seems this new location is even nicer than the one on soi 11, though I have not been to the soi 7 location yet.
I also second LL's recommendation of Amari Rincome's LaGritta as one of the best western buffets in CM. Both of these restaurants are within a few minutes walk of each other so take your choice of great Thai or western elegance.
Then after eating go get your teeth cleaned at Grace dental clinic on soi 11.
All joking aside, you may want to check it out if you are over that way as IMHO this is one of the best dental clinics in the world. And extremely reasonably priced. I think they may still have a free initial examination.

Thanks L-I-R for the detailed reply, especially the good surf link.
Are Herbal Products A Con
in Health and Medicine
Posted
I do not know this product, so can not comment specifically on it. I will say however to check with several good Thai herbal practioners or shops that specialize in selling Thai herbs and see what they say and see if they have something with the same herbs but at not so huge a price.
I am fully in favor of good proven herbal remedies but am usually quite leary of most of these patent type products that are so pricey, especially when they claim some sexual benefit. Any type of healing is a wholistic process and should be guided by someone knowedgeable in whatever system you use.
Just jumping in and using some product without a more complete knowledge of the cause of your imbalance to try to get one specific result can be not only useless it can be counterproductive or even dangerous (though usually a bogus tonic is simply very mild and ineffective in either a positive or negative direction). Again, this is not a comment on this specific product, just a general heads-up.
As a caveat I should say however that there are some very effective remedies that are expensive, because they contain things like gold and/or very rare herbs. Again, consult some Thai or ayurvedic herbal experts.
