  1. Hi All

I have a bit of a dilemma and I'm quite concerned. I'm a British passport holder.

I am a university student in Bangkok and have just converted the visa from ED language school to ED university and have been given the normal 90 days initial extension of stay (up to 17th June). I have little space left in my passport and need to get a new one urgently. The trouble is, I won't be able to go to the British passport appointment until the 6th April, but they'll cut my passport and it'll be useless until another one gets issued (which takes at least 6 weeks according to the website).

The next problem is that university start preparing the documents 40 days before the extension of stay is up for a further extension, but the problem there is that the passport number and expiry date on the letter the university issue me (to request an extension) will be the old cancelled passport number and dates (that I will still have in my hands but cannot travel on). I'm not sure if that passport can be used to make an extension of stay or not...

Could anyone provide me with any advice?

    Thank you in advance.

  2. You would need the documents from the university that you have started classes on or before the date you change the reason for your extension.

You could have an overlap of the dates on the letter from the language school and the university documents.

The is no minimum or max number of days you have on your current extension when doing the change.

Your visa expired long ago because it was only valid for one 90 day entry.

So I can't have a letter in mid February stating that I 'will' start on 1st March for instance to be able to change. I will need to have started my classes before I can actually change?

I don't officially finish my language school classes until mid march but would rather get on to the other visa.

  3. Hi All,

I'm super confused with the changing of visa from one educational institution to another.

I'm a British passport holder, entered Thailand on a triple entry TR visa in April 2014, then in May, signed up for a Thai Language school, went to Laos to get the ED visa in July and have had two extensions since then. My current extension stamp brings me to April 2015.

I am starting university in Bangkok in March and am quite eager to get onto the 1 year visa as soon as possible (of course it's so much easier than having to extend every 90 days or less!). The information that's coming from both the school and the university in regards to 'dates' isn't making much sense to me.

The language school will give me a letter 'cancelling' the visa for a date that I request but am confused as to what I need from the other school, and with what dates etc they need to state and when to go to immigration to do so. I hear that the dates have to match up and if they don't, overstay will be charged. This all makes little sense to me and I'm starting to panic about it all. I also heard that you can't cancel the visa until 14 days before it expires or something. But I don't know whether a visa 'expiry' is one year from the entry into Thailand date or up to the extension date.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks

  4. Hi All

Does anyone know if I am able to get a Thai driving licence for motorcycle at any time of the day at the JJ (head office) branch?

Something I have read online says something about a mandatory 2 hour lecture about Thai driving laws. Only problem is, I won't be able to make it in time for that!

Any advice or personal experience would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  5. People on Ed Visa who read and speak Thai already probably won't have any problems and the Ed Visa is still a good long stay option although now more expensive due to having to pay for more classes to get Ed Visa paperwork.

People who can't yet read and speak Thai better find a new alternative to stay in Thailand long term or actually learn Thai.

If you can't speak Thai then best to attend class and write notes in your book. If immigration believes that you are attending class and are a serious student then less likely to have problems.

I would think schools with good lawyers and good relationship with immigration would have less problems but that does not seem to be the case now.

Walen portrays itself as white as snow about abuse of Ed system. Checking with former students may support or contradict this image.

Does the Bkk Walen have more than three small classrooms in the Time Square building teaching Thai classes?

I would think 7 weeks of 4 or more hours a week to learn the alphabet is quite long unless the test has changed. Before it was saying the letters in order from memory, recognizing most the letters and vowels and reading a couple words. I got out after 2 weeks but also studied at home.

Walen have classrooms on other floors in the same building. It's an enormous company.

  6. Hi All,

I am buying a second hand motorbike from a private individual and would like to know how to do it.

I am on a non-im ED visa and I have already received the letter from immigration giving me permission to do so.

What else do I need? Apparently I need some forms signed by the current owner before it can be transferred but I can't seem to find these anywhere.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

  7. Does anyone know if this is true?

I did my extension last week and was given 90 days (well more actually because I went before the last day). I'm genuinely studying at a language school and not doing badly.

The immigration officer at desk 1 said 'ok you write your name down in Thai' and asked me to write another random couple of words he spoke before telling me that I need to speak to his boss at desk 3 later. He said 'if you speak Thai 'geng' then 90 days, if not then 60 days.

I got 90 days in the end.

I have a friend that goes to another language school (a crap one too) and they were being told by both immigration and those school that extensions are only for 60 days and not the usual 90 days.

Anyone know what's happening? I go to one of the famous schools in Bangkok based in Asok by the way.

  8. Hi All,

I'm a British passport holder holding a Vientiane issued Non Im - ED visa for a language school in Bangkok. Currently I'm doing my 90 day extensions and 1 year will have elapsed by around July 2015. I will be starting university in Bangkok in the new year and would like to know the process of converting my visa from one school's paperwork to another. I'm very reluctant to go back to Vientiane to obtain a new visa (didn't like that trip at all), so wonder what my options were. I understand that you're issued with a 3 month visa and then a year at the end of those 3 months.

If anyone else has any knowledge, or even better, self-experience with this situation I would be grateful to hear from you.

I also only have 2 blank visa pages left and have one more extension to do (or not to do should another option be available)

    Thank you in advance.
