Same thing ourselves whenever we did visit a Thai island in the past - the prices are ridiculous.  IMO the people on those islands are of the view that tourists are to be ripped off - not that there is any difference all over the world. But in Thailand there is very little (if any) control by authorities to at least try to limit to ripping off.  I can remember Prayut tryng to stop the taxi mafia in Phuket ripping off tourists after they had just started to return to the island during Covid. They basically told him to go fornicate himself - just like they do to anyone that tries to 'control' them.  That attitude is rampant in Thailand - especially in the islands.

Years ago I was talking to a Thai bloke at golf in Chiang Mai, and he said something like - "Thais are always ripping each other off, why should we not rip off Falangs when they are happy to pay stupid money".   Fair enough point.

Same with the taxi mafia in Samui. At one time they tried to make "Meter Taxis" use their meters. Strange how many meters "not work!"

Will he beg for the money to pay for the fines? 🤔 555

Slightly off topic, but I remember a few years ago, a guy I knew  was playing as a part time musician/drummer but did not declare it to the Inland Revenue, ("Tax Man") and got "found out".  After a couple of hours of "negotiations" they decided that he owed them about £100, and he said "That means I've got to do an extra couple of gigs this week just to pay you lot!" 🙂

I think it is a british thing "queensbury rules"  " A fair fight is a fair fight"  etc but I also think its one of the British values that is gradually being eroded. One of the "benefits" or rather consequences of multiculturalism in my opinion

Yes - quite agree! And one of the "benefits" (pun intended!) of being a "Nanny State"!

The world doesn't need whining entitled losers!

If you are not happy with something, just make the best out of what you have or suck it up!

    Period!

    Are you on yours?

"If you are not happy with something, just make the best out of what you have or suck it up!" Sounds very much like what the present Government would say to Move Forward Party voters!

That I don't know about but I am sure you have examples? However you were specifically talking about food and drink, I should have quoted your full post:

"She couldn't believe the prices charged for even basic Thai  meals and water! I hesitate to think what the "farang" prices are!"

My, my,  we are being particular! The entrance fee for the "Elephant Trek" at one of the Samui  waterfalls is at least double - as is the entrance to the "Zoo".

And one of my friends (R.I.P.) always asked for the "locals" menu at one or two restaurants that we visited, but granted that was a couple of years ago, and sadly, he is no longer here to verify the locations, and I can't remember the names - sorry!

I agree - Samui is definitely the least 'violent' and least 'mafia controlled' of all the islands. But like all of them it is a scam - just getting there is a scam.

My wife is from Esan and was shocked at the prices on Samui - then she went to Koh Phangan! (And not at "Party Time") She couldn't believe the prices charged for even basic Thai  meals and water! I hesitate to think what the "farang" prices are!

Well, time for you to go to bed, kid!

I'm not a child, or even a baby "GOAT", but I do get bored with these "if you don't like it -  go home" posts.

Nothing or nowhere is perfect, andf I don't expect it to be, but that still doesn't mean that if I'm not happy about a particular situation or statement, I should just "put up or shut up"!

Personally, after witnessing Songkran, I don't hold much of it.

There are many things that I find annoying, as someone who has to work 7 days a week.

(I would probably see it differently if I had Thai children and no need to work).

Nevertheless, I fully agree to everything you state: as a guest among hosts who actually did not invite me, I am not to judge local traditions, I am just to keep my opinions for myself, just saying to myself that next year, I will think about traveling abroad.

While I find some aspects of Thailand annoying - but which country is perfect?... - I find grumpy expats and entitled boomers always criticizing every sh*t even more annoying!

Like expats are normally told in every country I have been living in: if you don't like it, leave! Period!

    "grumpy expats and entitled boomers"

If you don't like the way Thailand does things go back where you came from."

".....if you don't like it, leave!"

Yawn and double yawn and even triple yawn!!!

6 against 1 again. Cowardly drunken scumbags.

Par for the course - it just makes a change for the Thais to be shown as the "Bad Boys" in the media, instead of the deluge of bad press foreigners have been getting recently!

Or maybe it's just a token gesture - what's the odds that the next person/persons misbehaving  will be listed as "foreign" in the headlines on AN?

Is it not more likely they will do a Makro and put western food prices up, ie tins of Ayam baked beans and tins of spam? Then blame foreign wars as an excuse.

"Then blame foreign wars as an excuse." The last can to carry the blame for price hikes and delays in delivery was Covid-19.

Any prospective reductions in the price of imported wine will probably meet the same fate - despite the lowering of import taxes and duties.

Funny? thats so insensitive of you to think that, seriously give your sick inquisition a break! Morbid  much!!

OK - English is a "funny" language - maybe I should have said "surprisingly"?

"Sick inquisition"? "Morbid much"? 😕 I was merely pointing out that in this country it is not unusual  for personal items of value to be taken/stolen in circumstances that woud be considered "taboo" in my old home country.

Could be hat they didn't know how much money he had on him, if any , so wouldn't know if any money was missing

I see your point about the quantity, but I think that there is a high possibility that he had some cash on him even if it was a tragic accident.

I know that anyone on a night out carries cash to pay for their evening's entertainment, and I think it doubtful that the reason why he went home alone/missing was because he had no money left!
