  1. Hmmm.... since there was also that crackdown on companies whose sole purpose was to own a farang's land, rather than dissolving those companies perhaps the ones that are old enough could be made available to these start-ups? In other parts of the world one of these is known as "shelf company" (as in "off the shelf"). An enterprising fellar might sieze the opportunity to start a shelf-company brokerage! post-20734-1158344942.gif

  2. Thai official pleads with sightseers to stop visiting Thailand

BANGKOK: -- Litter is piling up in the bathrooms, there aren't enough toilets and there's too much picnicking going on. The root of the problem? Too many sightseers.

"So many people are coming for sightseeing, and we're pleading with them to stop. There are too many," Chotisak said. "There aren't enough bathrooms. People are complaining that there's litter all over the bathrooms. They're eating here and there, parking their cars in a mess."

"Please don't come visit and take pictures," he said.

    --AP 2006-10-02

they should charge some 20 baht those pesky sightseers. Hope they will cram into Puthamonton park on weekends again

Oh, c'mon, it's only 3 baht at Hualampong!

  3. You may have some luck searching on "Professional Engineer" or "P.E", possibly a "Sor Yor" or "Wor Yor" (senior engineer) in Thai.

Thailand has a Council of Engineers with a website at http://www.coe.or.th/ but it appears to be all in Thai.

A Consulting Engineers Association can be found at http://www.ceat.or.th/

There's also an IEEE Thailand website at http://www.ieeethailand.org/

Please post a followup if you find any good information.

  4. Any Pattaya real estate agent is just as good as any other (just as bad, too).

In any case, do you really need a real estate agent to sell a house in Thailand? I mean, don't the houses just kind of sell themselves?

  5. First problem: work permit hassles. Work permits are required for both paid and unpaid, both mental and physical "work". So any kind of farang community theatre is probably out. Could a farang direct a Thai cast without a work permit? Could they even write the script?

I expect it would be extremely difficult to appeal to a mixed audience so you'd have to focus your productions on either a Thai audience or a farang audience. The (free) evening music concerts in Bangkok's Lumpini Park draw decent crowds; might a "Shakespeare in the Park (in Thai reinterpreted for a Thai audience) "?

Here's a listing of some of what's currently on in Bangkok: http://www.bangkok.com/whats-on-on-stage/index.html

Good luck, though -- I really do believe Thailand needs more of this kind of thing.

  6. I remember reading about a good Microbrewery in Pattaya - does anyone know where I can find it - directions from Jomtien Beach would be great.

There used to be a brewery/pub next to Big-C but it closed down (and has been replaced by an overpriced furniture shop). There may be others.

I saw a plce called Hardbody - is that any good?

It is one of the last reasonably priced gyms in all of Pattaya. Note that some of the clientele may be a little more (openly) gay than at your average gym.

  7. Apex, and now at House in RCA. So Bangkok is a great place to be a film buff, I think.

Thailand is a wretched place to be a film buff, I think. Thai movies are generally awful. And what gets imported usually only depends on what stars are in it (even if they only have minor roles); consider the decision to import that movie about an American game-show host that no one in Thailand had ever heard of.

So by all means, fly in for the film festival -- but if movies are your thing you probably shouldn't stick around.

Right now, there is gem among the National Treasures, Bridget Joneses, Aviators and other dreck that Hollywood is pushing Bangkok's way.

If you're sick of Hollywood blockbusters, blame the Germans (or their tax-shelters, at least).

  8. The latest edition of Pattaya.com/Land & House magazine, August 2006 Issue 22, has an article on page 84 which states that "the Thailand Elite Card which will benefit foreign investors and tourists greatly, for instance, the policy to relax the Land Laws which will enable foreign members of the Elite Card to possess land through zoning in Pattaya, Chiangmai, Nong Khai and Koh Samui."

(This was before the coup although the writer, Somshogun, does presage it with "...since this was the brain child of Prime Minister Taksin Shinawatra which has given rise to the question, what would happened if the PM was no longer in office?")

  9. Another exception to get a free flight is to confess to a high profile murder.

According to this article Mr. Karr's flight was not paid for by the US government but by the Boulder (Colorado) District Attorney's office: "An outline of expenses shows the 15-hour flight from Thailand, on which Karr sipped champagne, dined on fried king prawns and roast duck, cost the county $5,925." I've said it before and I'll say it again: Thank G_d for local government!

  10. I used to live under a flightpath of a fairly busy airport (not as busy as BKK, but still pretty busy). You just kind of get used to the noise after a while. And when I moved away I kinda missed it -- too quiet. Take-offs were rare between about 11pm and 6am, though. Are there any night-time restrictions at Suvarnabhumi?

JAKE (after a passing train nearly shakes the room apart): How often does the train go by?

ELWOOD: So often that you won't even notice it.
