Critics split over AVATAR sequel - The Way of Water
gomangosteen replied to Social Media's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
When these movies are made for the full theatre experience, some despair at 'waiting for the torrent' for tv viewing. -
British woman breaks nearly every bone in face in Thailand
gomangosteen replied to webfact's topic in Koh Samui News
No doubt you've 'said it before' Bust as others have also said before - as does the article, she was not driving the motorcycle. She was pillion. -
Bikes. Is it luck, maintenance? I bought a Giant ATX Pro XL frame here (Chanthaburi) 2012 and had it built with components of my choice, 2.1" road tyres, and recorded 38,000km on it by end 2019, nothing dramatic other than regular maintenance + tyres, chains, etc. I wore it out; gave the frame/wheels away to a local who did a rebuild; bought a Trek and it's been similarly reliable - Vittoria Evolution 29" tyres have been brilliant for all-conditions riding. Brought a Specialized triathlon bike back on one of my trips to NZ but prefer the upright riding in local traffic/roads, barely used except for group rides.

I'm surprised the owner admitted to being the owner. I detailed an event on this forum at the time, July 2019, partner knocked off her bike and bitten by a dog while cycling to the gym. Grazes, and a course of treatment in case of rabies. 'Owners' denied it was their dog, rather it was a stray that lived there that they fed, for at least the two years we'd lived nearby . . . it had chased other walkers/cyclists previously. As they wouldn't do anything, waited till I was away in case of 'blame the farang' and she arranged for its disposal. As it "wasn't theirs" they could hardly complain, could they? Solved.

Critics split over AVATAR sequel - The Way of Water

Guessing you may not be in the target demographic. Daughters 17/22 went yesterday and enjoyed it; a friend in NZ, 60s, who's a reliable film critic and I usually agree with his reviews, suggested wearing a snorkel and putting one's head in an aquarium for three hours as an alternative to viewing the movie. Opinions vary! -
Back to the young man who died - from Thairath News he'd been resident in Thailand since age of five years so I think we can ignore the 'avoiding Putin' claims. Just a kid. Though a very tall one, 2.10m at age 19. His younger brother Benjamin Sobolev, 16, was also present at the time of his brother's death He was the second runner-up in the world in 2018-2019 for Flow Rider Global (surf simulator, as shown above). He only took up basketball at age 17, and played for the Pattaya Basketball Club team and competed in some of Thailand's major 3x3 basketball tournaments, sweeping almost every championship.

Can Thailand afford to raise minimum wage to 600 baht?
gomangosteen replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Eldest daughter worked at a 7/11 for the last three years of her university studies, part-time, and full-time during her uni vacation. Finished with them in May this year, rate was 380 baht per shift at that time, with some seniority responsibility, also there was overtime available at times. She enjoyed it - good owners, several other uni students on staff, useful work experience apart from the money. Same store has recently been advertising full-time vacancies starting a 10,500 per month, suggests they have increased the daily rate. -

Poll: 50%+ Gen Z Thais say end booze ban on Buddhist religious days
gomangosteen replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
My response to this is to remove the holidays as well. Same would apply in many western countries where there are compulsory holidays for Christian festivals - Easter, Christmas etc where the greater percentage of population is not Christian. Make allowance for this in annual leave entitlements, staff can take leave if they wish, in line with their own religious or non-religious beliefs rather than impose it on the general population. But having said that, a poll where 219 under 25s were 'anti' is hardly a national referendum, is it? -
Top Gun Maverick voted Best film 2022
gomangosteen replied to Social Media's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Top Gun Maverick was fine, but not my own #1 movie of the year As predictable as any action feature movie where the good guy always wins. Spectacular cinematography on the big cinema screen - that's what it was made for not TV/home cinema. Seems enough people liked it, US$1.4 billion so far. -

Thailand to turn chilly for seven days from Tuesday
gomangosteen replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Last week daughter #1 went up to Rayong to see an indoor tulip growing facility. Temperature maintained at a chilly 14.8C - not exactly life-threatening but she was prepared with additional clothing, however as she says, believes it's the first time in her life she's experienced sub-20C temperatures apart from opening the refrigerator. Back to normal - forecast 34C at 3pm today, 23C overnight. -

Immigration holidays
gomangosteen replied to pontious's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
King Taksin Day The Cabinet has also declared 28 December the eastern region’s 2021 regional holiday, celebrating King Taksin Day. This holiday will be observed in 8 eastern provinces, namely Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, and Sa Kaeo. . . My understanding is this is only for the usual suspects - government, banks, schools. Helpfully the immigration website states: "Closed on holidays" -

And judging by the whiny b1tches here there's a few 'she's masquerading as males ... Brittney Griner featured in YouTube videos while at junior school, viewed by several million. Bit early to have had 'your op' She has won two Olympic gold medals, two World Championship gold medals, four European league titles, three Russian league titles, numerous US awards/titles, plus a long list of awards from high school onwards. I think it would take quite a moron to think no one had pointed out by now she was male. Over to you. -
Take a taxi from Suvarnabhumi airport at arrival level?
gomangosteen replied to jil's topic in Suvarnabhumi Airport Forum
I came home on Friday 2nd Dec - certainly no shortage of taxis at Suvarnabhumi that morning - no wait at all, just get my ticket from the machine and walk to the waiting car. -
Related, in a way, I read this story recently, incredible courage and perseverance from one of the bomber's victims - what a man! Bali bombing victim given 5% survival chance now a star on the golf course Nov 30 2022 It is hard not to notice Ben Tullipan on a golf course. The 46-year-old Aussie walks confidently up to the tee and swings like a seasoned pro. Two artificial legs are the only clue he’s not your average club hacker. Tullipan sustained horrendous injuries in 2002 in what is now known as the Bali bombings – a terrorist attack on a resort in the Indonesian tourist hotspot that killed 202 people. Golf has been crucial to his recovery and on Monday and Tuesday he played in the NZ Disability Golf Open at Manor Park Golf Sanctuary in Lower Hutt. [Wellington, New Zealand] “I was 5 metres away from a car bomb when it went off,” he recalls. Unable to use his legs, he tried to drag himself out but suffered further injuries from broken bottles and fire. Doctors told Tullipan he was unlikely to survive but if he did, he would never walk. As well as both legs, he lost hearing on one side and most of his stomach muscles. More than 60% of his shattered body suffered full thickness burns. Given a 5% chance of survival he wanted to prove the doctors wrong and show he could lead a normal life. Once he learned to walk, the former boxer looked for a new sport and when his mates joked he would fall over on his two artificial legs if he tried golf, he rose to the challenge. Golf had given him many opportunities to meet people and tell his inspiring story, he said. Now living in Queensland, Tullipan works for Empower Golf running clinics encouraging those with disabilities to take up golf.

Visa run, Padang Besar
gomangosteen replied to thaiasia's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I'm with you on that one; I'm not retired - just what do retired people 'do' all day that it's so desperate to come back the same day? It's not as if the required dates aren't known well in advance, we take them as holidays - returned yesterday from KL having spent a week traveling, headed back to Malacca as hadn't been there since 2016; same ever since I've been here, trips within Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, never less than a week. -
These lampposts didn't even get posts ... loosely attached to buildings along a Chanthaburi riverside road, only a few function as lights, several have fallen off and sit propped up on the pavement as ornaments. I wasn't aware of this fraud business ... there's also a stretch of rural road, no houses, that strangely has about 150m of fancy lights for no apparent reason. I don't know if they're connected, or purely decorative. Money well spent? Did consider taking one home for the garden, but that would be akin to a crime against humanity and the "ha ha" full force of the law would apply

A visit wouldn't bother me; as it seems I may now the only westerner (pop. 7000) in town since Covid appears to have cleared out the seniors I'd feel special???? if an IO delegation turns up from the city. I used to be in a cycling group with one of the city IOs unsure if he's still there, in our 12th year here I've never never had any bother with the Chanthaburi office. Police obviously know I'm here, only interactions are smiles and waves, though I was once pulled over by highway patrol and told off for cycling on Sukhumvit Rd as it was "too dangerous". It's a quiet life.
