  1. The 49th Thailand National Games are being held across Chanthaburi province 9-20 December 2024; over 10,000 competitors plus supporters - a boost for local accommodation and hospitality. 57 sports plus five demonstration sports. Rugby! Based at Burapha University, there's been 4 matches (XVs) a day Mon-Thur, they have a break today tomorrow before quarterfinals on Sunday, meantime two days of Rugby Sevens. Photos from Tuesday, first match played in 32C, later in the day 34C. And ground like concrete, Eastern Thailand: Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Chonburi, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Sa Kaeo, Trat
  2. Helmet - always have, always will. Follow a local emergency responder on Facebook her day is mostly just a succession of motorcycle accidents, commonly head injuries minus a helmet of course. Yesterday afternoon I was cycling home there'd been a motorscooter accident a few minutes before, dry, straight road, separate 2.5m motorcycle lane; rider had gone off into the long grass head-on into a concrete lighting pole. Later I'm passed by an ambulance - according to Facebook rider is 'critical'. My guess, texting or talking on her phone. But my best story of the week, Sunday we were coming home from the beach, ahead a saw a motorbike weaving across the lane, got closer and realised he was trying to do a wheelstand. No helmet of course, male, 20s. I slowed and stayed well back, to my delight he got it up near vertical, lost balance and went into a roadside deep ditch of long grass. Gave him a toot and wave ....no interest in helping retrieve the bike.
  3. Eco-nomical? Replaced at about 2500km on daughter's Yamaha Fino. This was an 'ecotire' brand, she bought it on the way home from uni one night due to a piece of wire embedded in the tyre, paid 650 baht. No other options and needed to get home. I found them on Shopee for around 300. Regardless of price, the 'eco' part may be they're made from recycled cardboard. Replaced at 12 weeks when bike in for service at Yamaha. Each week she does 5 x 28km plus some weekend riding to/from part time job, so around 200km at most. In MotoGP terms this would be the soft compound tyre?
  4. Lambretta and Vespa dealers are less than 100m apart in Chanthaburi, lots of choice though see more Vespas - popular with uni students
  5. and of course always wear the correct safety gear
  6. I hadn't seen a Zontes scooter before, then two in one day in the carpark at Central. The Zontes 350E uses a 349cc water-cooled 1-cylinder, 4-stroke, 4-valve engine that delivers a maximum power of 36.7 hp at 7,500 rpm. 16 litre fuel tank gives longer distance range for travel. Zontes 350E In Thailand, Zontes is distributed by Dynamic Motor, the same dealer as Lambretta motorcycles, so Zontes now has more than 60 dealerships and service centers nationwide.

  9. Malaysia abolished mandatory death penalty last year: The Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023 came into effect in July 2023, granted judges the discretion of imposing prison sentences of between 30 and 40 years in place of the death penalty for serious crimes including murder, treason, kidnapping, terrorist acts, and drug trafficking. Under the Act, life imprisonment has also been replaced with prison terms of between 30 and 40 years.
  10. Honda ADV 160 three-wheeler in Pattaya. Note the disabled sticker on the screen; looks like a good conversion, are these done locally? Will ABS still function properly on this?
  11. Buriram race times Saturday 15:00 MotoGP™ 13 Laps Tissot Sprint Sunday 12:00 Moto3™ 19 Laps 13:15 Moto2™ 22 Laps 15:00 MotoGP™ 26 Laps And the tourists arrive, Buriram locals have been advised to be aware of inexperienced motorcyclists unfamiliar with local roads.
  12. It was the gold shop further inside the store, opposite Dairy Queen/Mister Donut. Amazed he got away, either exit then to the carpark - exiting that carpark onto the main road is often a slow process. A lot of effort stealing a car etc all for just 40k gold - no surprise if this master criminal is caught quickly trying to resell it.
  13. For all the talk and faux hysteria, can anyone direct me to a confirmed incident of a person being prosecuted for volunteering? Ever? Anything from the last 20 years will suffice, I can't recall one. Fined, imprisoned, deported, waterboarded, blacklisted any proven example will do. Even a jolly good official telling off will do. Organisation I've supported has for many years a continual flow of volunteers through an international organisation; up to four at a time, three weeks minimum and usually six. They arrive visa-exempt. Housed and fed in exchange for 25hrs/week. Nothing 'hidden' they're welcomed on a community-wide Facebook page. Daughter is at uni now, I was available as a parent helper all throughout her years at the local school. Should I confess, turn myself in?

  16. Ambulance and emergency responder motorcycle in front of me at traffic lights this afternoon. A helmet might be a sensible idea for motorcycle medical staff. Just maybe.
  17. Blue sky over Sukhumvit Rd at Noen Sung, Chanthaburi I thought the red warning flag was a nice touch Eastern Thailand: Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Chonburi, Prachin Buri, Rayong, Sa Kaeo, Trat

  19. The old Seinfeld TV show had an episode 'opposite George' where that character chose the opposite of his instincts. Maybe that's the way to ride/drive to survive here - think 'what would a Thai do?' and do the opposite. A vehicle ahead does not mean you must overtake/undertake it. See this so often, a driver just has to get past as if it's a race (to their finish sometimes) I just hang back, let them go. And leave plenty of space in case they do cause a crash. My daughter has referred to my driving as 'like a turtle' no doubt compared to her death-defying risk-taking uni friends. Even allowing for the age gap, expect I'll outlive a few of them.
  20. I follow a local emergency responder online (Chanthaburi province), she updates with any road accidents attended each shift; I don't have any statistics and I won't guess one either, but in so many of the motorcycle injury and fatality events, no other vehicle is involved. There'll be a photo of a crashed motorcycle, a pixellated body some metres away. Often the 'other party' is a corner, a tree, a ditch or a pond/river. Everyone's a racer, until they're not. Friday 4th there was one near us, boy of 16 cut unsuccessfully in front of a truck/trailer, his Scoopy was wedged and dragged along under the front of the truck, his body several sets of wheels back. What a job. And two Fridays before she attended to two motorcycle fatalities in a single shift. Gets home: "How was your day at work today?"
  21. I just completed this quiz. My Score 70/100 My Time 152 seconds

  25. Took me to three different Honda dealers to find one that would accept cash for a new bike (December 2023). Preference was to buy in wife's name and finance over 24, 36 or 48 months. Honda currently advertising Wave 125 for 48 easy payments of 2194 baht. That's over 100k.
