  1. Depends where you live. Bangkok is much easier for permits than upcountry. Regardless, if a gun is registered to someone else and you get caught with it (like going to a range to practise) and the registered owner is not present, big problem.
  2. Airguns (.22 / .177) need a firearms permit here to own legally. The same permit / hassle as required for a small bore/fullbore rifle or pistol. BB guns don't need a permit.
  3. Leaving the medical stuff to one side, there has been (unfortunately) a 'need' to be vaccinated, until very recently, in order to travel internationally with any degree of ease. I just went to the US and 'being vaccinated' was mandatory and checked rigorously by the airline here at check-in (but not, of course, on arrival in the US). Of course, the fact that my vaccination was a year ago and so unlikely to be of any use to anyone was irrelevant as far as the CDC criteria are concerned.
  4. Like so many others. How about 'Fortress Australia'? Forbade entry AND exit to its own citizens for more than a year, and now ... From 9 September 2022, masks are no longer required on flights travelling to Australia. From July 6 2022, the way you travel to and from Australia has changed. All travellers should be aware that: - People entering Australia do not need to provide evidence of vaccination status https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/covid19/entering-and-leaving-australia Question is whether Thailand will also do away with the need to be vaccinated. I was asked to show proof of vaccination at Suvarnabhumi when returning last week.
  5. The sharia concept of 'an-nushuz' may help you out. For a wife, it would include: She does not beautify herself for her husband when he desires that from her. She disobeys her husband with respect to coming to his bed and she refuses to respond to his calls. She leaves the house without his permission or without any legal right to do so. She does not perform her obligatory religious duties, such as failure to perform some prayers, fasting Ramadan, covering her 'awra, or any other obligatory act of Islam. Very progressive. (https://www.islamswomen.com/marriage/fiqh_of_marriage_9.php)
  6. Out of interest, what does a bank account, whether in Thailand or UK, have to do with "capital gains protection"? If your friend is selling a UK property, unless it's his primary residence then CGT liability will arise regardless of tax status / residency.
  7. Might be some clues here ... "CCTV however did capture the incident and was shared on social media." https://thepattayanews.com/2022/09/01/one-british-man-dead-second-seriously-injured-after-motorbike-collision-with-a-garbage-truck-on-samui-island/ If there were beers under the seat it sounds like a scooter, not something more sporty.
  8. There are EV pick ups manufactured locally?? Who would ever buy a pick up priced at more than 2 million baht?? The main question of course is whether an EV one-tonne pick up truck is still capable of doing 140 kmh while loaded with three tonnes of pineapples / 27 migrant workers / a 20-foot high spirit house [select as appropriate].
  9. I'm sure DPM Wissanu is right on it. After all, apparently he's the only person in Thailand qualified to fiddle with the constitution. Plenty of quality candidates: Prawit Anutin Thammanat My cat
  10. I don't think you can say they're a Thai company. There are Thai entities incorporated here but the directors and shareholders are all Chinese (actually the shareholders are HK companies but I suspect they'll be ultimately owned by BVI or Cayman holdcos). GREAT WALL MOTOR SALES (THAILAND) COMPANY LIMITED (incorporated Jan 2020, Reg Cap THB 330 million) GREAT WALL MOTOR MANUFACTURING (THAILAND) COMPANY LIMITED (incorporated 1992 Reg Cap THB 8.8 billion) IMO Chinese companies are ahead of the curve with EV development, with exception of Tesla, because the Chinese motor industry has made EVs a core focus. Would I buy one in Thailand? Only if I lived in Bangkok, which is where the sales and service network is currently focused, and where an EV makes the most sense if cutting out short duration high emission journeys is a goal. Yet they're still niche brands. And since modern cars are usually stuffed full of tech, dealer servicing is mandatory unless you want to void warranty. More stuff to malfunction, too.
  11. Indeed. It's a sorry tale. From the rambling Walter Mitty statement of 'facts' allegedly penned by the boyfriend: "It was intoxicating being around someone so inexperienced and green behind the gills ... Ashley had no street experience. Hardly any life experience either. She’d never attended university ..." Anyone who's a parent of a typical 'normal' 19-year old should empathise with this poor girl's situation. The boyfriend's statement has been redacted in places. However, whoever did the redacting didn't do a very good job and the underlying text is still there. It makes for very interesting reading. For legal reasons I shall neither provide a link to the statement, nor make any reference to its content other than the excerpt above.
  12. "Dr. Taweesin said that he would like the public to continue to wear face masks while they are outdoors and among people ..." Yes, yes. Keep on with the doom and gloom. Project Fear has years to run.
  13. "Dr. Taweesin said that he would like the public to continue to wear face masks while they are outdoors and among people ..." Yes, yes. Keep on with the doom and gloom. Project Fear has years to run. I'm surprised he didn't bang on about the risk of wearing the same one for days on end. "It is also recommended that people change their facemasks every 6-8 hours, especially when the mask becomes damp or when coming back from a high risk or crowded area, where there is a chance of the disease spreading." https://www.thaipbsworld.com/life-threatening-risk-of-repeatedly-wearing-same-face-mask-confirmed/
  14. I think you'll find 95% plus of people who "get sick" - mask wearers or not - don't go to hospital anyway because, er, they don't need to. No need to pray to get better either, that seems to happen naturally ...
  15. That's a 0.017132567% "higher risk' for Covid-19 spread. Apparently.
  16. Corporal punishment isn't always a deterrent: I was beaten at school and all it did was make me even more anti-authority.
  17. Is it just me, or does the Minister share a striking resemblance to Dr Who arch-villain Davros?
  18. I've used a 5-year Thai license to rent cars on many occasions in UK, Italy, USA: never been asked for an IDP, but probably no harm in having one.
  19. Taking a hire car out of UK is quite a hassle. Probably easier to take Eurostar to Lille or Lyon (unless they fancy spending some time in Paris). https://www.enterprise.co.uk/en/car-hire/deals/EuropeanTravel.html
  20. I don't think it's fixation on masks per se. It's more (for me, anyway) idle curiosity as to why wearing of masks outside in Thailand remains so prevalent amongst locals. Having lived in BKK since the late 1980s I can, however, attest with confidence that it is nonsense to try and say that general mask-wearing was popular / prevalent pre-Covid. That is simply not true. It is also complete rubbish to suggest that many people now wear masks outside because they are more attuned to issues linked to air pollution. A properly fitted N95 or better mask will be beneficial in protecting against the most dangerous fine particulates. Anything else - surgical mask, bandana etc - may offer some protection against coarse particulates, but is of little to no benefit protecting against the really fine stuff that gets deep into lung tissue. The 'average' Thai in Bangkok or wherever wears a mask as much because of pressure to comply with social norms as for any other reason. They've been told by their elders and betters that they need to wear them, so they do.
  21. I commented earlier: "... plus the gutless media here will be too scared of defamation laws to print names etc". Watching TV news this evening (Nation Thai channel) and they listed all the dead as plain Mr / Ms (นาย/น.ศ.) . However there are various earlier online reports which identified some of the victims as military (NCOs - I've blocked out the names). ทราบชื่อ 1.จ่าเอก xxxx xxxx อายุ 32 ปี 2.จ่าเอก xxx xxx อายุ 31 ปี Either initial reports were wrong or I suspect the wagons are being circled and it's been deemed unwise to mention military customers or ... The newsreader, sounding grave, said "someone has to take responsibility". Really? Ya think? My heart goes out to the victims and their families. What's the betting there'll be no insurance, or no more than some risible amount that won't cover any long-term care needs, or compensation. A couple of years back the illegal hi-so pub operation next to my condo in BKK had a kitchen fire. My tenant took photos of the flames shooting up to his third floor balcony. Could we do anything? Nope - the place has high-powered shareholders. Police not interested, district office not interested ... "no-one was hurt, were they?" It's that thinking which allows this sort of s**t to rinse and repeat.
  22. Cue hapless manager taking the fall while the owners slide, if they're connected in any way (lot of military folk in Sattahip). Plus the gutless media here will be too scared of defamation laws to print names etc. Anyone remember Santika in Bangkok ...
  23. I flew back in early July on TG and masking was not compulsory. Or rather, in Thai the announcement said "must wear" but in English it said "recommended to wear". I and many others didn't wear a mask and cabin crew said nothing. Didn't wear one at the airport either (both LHR and BKK). If you're flying on a 777 that is way better than the tired 787 Dreamliner. AFAIK the 777 is used on the midday LHR departure while the 787 is the evening flight. Food is dire, movies are poor (and on 787 the screens are fixed to the seat back so if the person in front reclines their seat all the way you have to do the same to see the screen). But it is direct. That said, now EVA are flying LHR-BKK again, I'd always choose EVA over TG.
  24. Possibly. Also some celebrities. People in the media. Rich folks who don't care what other people think. People who saw an influencer on IG with a 'cute' tat. Back in the early 90s I'd have probably agreed with the comment that tattoos were usually associated with bar girls. Not anymore. Got to move with these social media driven times, my friend.
