  1. The rise of abuse against women is not confined to Thailand , this is another one of the worlds anti social trends that we can do without , lots of theories have been bandied about , mine, too much alcohol and drugs.bah.gif

My theory, gets them a better deal in a divorce, so why not accuse him.

No real evidence anywhere in the world that violence towards women is on the rise.

And in Thailand, plenty of violence towards men, but nobody cares about what happens to men.

Time for campaigns to aim at reducing violence towards anyone.

great post and I completely agree, it seems acceptable to physically abuse a man. Me and my thai gf were sitting on beach road in pattaya people watching and saw a thai couple arguing, she slapped him around the face which my gf thought was ok and I said would it be ok if he hit her which she replied no because she is lady, I then said if she wants to act like a man she must expect to be treated like a man! A very big discussion followed

  2. Had to get up this morning early and run an errand.....beautiful day in CM - birds singing - perfect weather.....

Unfortunately that's how it is in the west, instead of looking for the good in people we sometimes look for the bad things hence why the west is how it is. I will say that when I started to holiday in Thailand for just one month at Xmas I thought it was the most incredible place I'd been to, now I spend 6/7 months here and the rest back in uk working it's kind of spoilt the fantasy image a little bit, yes it's still a beautiful place with a lot of beautiful happy people but there are still a lot of problems here like the rest of the world. I'm still very happy coming to Thailand and spending time here, let's facet it at 43 yrs old it if I can get away with working for only 6 months of the year I think I'm doing ok, I'm just a bit more on my guard while I'm here.

Pried myself slowly awayfrom the beautiful woman that is my wife so not to wake her up - watched her reach out/search for me with her arm and one foot while dead asleep - smiled and tip toed out....

Then one of my biggest decisions of the day on my way out - do I wear the Tevas or flip flops.....

    Then on to my errand......

We live in the land of plenty - an easy place to live and get along

If hungry you can find what/who you'd like to eat 24/7....smiles are plentiful....many things to do and see....many events as well as interesting places waiting to be explored.....interesting people to talk to everywhere - while out and about 2 women struck up conversations with me (no - not those kind of women - or places) makes for a very pleasant environment.....

Why - does there seem to be so many bitter, angry, attacking, caustically poisonous, soured, miserable posters ??????

Maybe it just that they are everywhere but no official "Miserable Forum" for people to share their grief with others so they poison threads that they have no business even commenting in....maybe in their home country they just fit in....maybe they come here and turn miserable......

    Can anyone enlighten me?

  3. I went to Laos the other day to renew my visa and whilst looking around the market I saw this spider run between the bamboo products on the table, it was just slightly smaller than my fist, I don't know what sort of spider it was but I was sh!!tin it, I was straight out of there.

  4. I think your a little optimistic with your plans although I do know one fella who's a cleaner off shore, he does one month on one month off. I personally work in England as a hgv driver during the summer and then when I have enough money I fly back to Thailand and lead a cheap and simple life. If you'd like any help or advice I can send you my email.

  5. The Thai Art of 'Re-Gifting'

This used to drive me nuts.

You take the extra effort buy buy an appropriate or special gift for a Thai Person.

It's received, smiles are exchanged and a few days later, out of sight, the gift is opened.

Sometimes, you never see that gift again.

Sometimes you see that another Family member uses it as their own.

Even better it's been 're-gifted' to them.

    Classic cases of all three.

Bought a nice shirt for the gf's old man. Polo shirt, with a pocket, and Australia words on the pocket.

Never saw him wore it once. Quizzed the gf. She claims to know nothing. Six months later ... never saw it being worn.

Finally, the gf hints at what might have happened. He has maybe 're-gifted' to a friend ... whistling.gif

Not because he didn't like it, but he wanted good face by giving a 'foreign' gift.

Gave the same guy an electric razor. Never used it. Now, my fault there ... I reckon he'd shave maybe once a month ... not very hirsute.

He then (effectively) gives it to his daughter ... who gives it to her bf. A man that I don't particularly like.

Yeh, Yeh, I know ... 'David, you've given the gift ... it's not yours any more. The joy is in the giving'.

Well, I reckon the joy is also in the recipient using your gift.

Mate of mine gave his gf and nice purse, maybe $50-$60 bucks worth. She tots off to Thailand and gives it to her sister.

    Why?

Well, her sister worked so that my mates gf could go to University ... it was pay-back time.

I like giving surprises ... but, more often then not now, I ask what I should buy for the person ... and then pray it's not re-gifted ... facepalm.gif

BTW ... if anyone here is a smaller size member I have an 'official copy' Liverpool shirt which my gf's friends gave me for Christmas last year ... happy to re-gift it ... laugh.png

  6. I'm currently on a multiple entry tourist visa (3 entries and I'll probably stay for around 7 months), my thai gf and I have moved into a little town house style place and have been purchasing a lot of stuff for said place also we went halfs on a second hand moped, I've kept receipts for everything I've purchased hoping that I could claim the tax back at the airport, I am right in saying it's only things I can physically show them at the airport that I can claim for? I've never claimed for the tax before but have seen it every time I've travelled so thought I'd give it a go this year.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  7. I ride a 900cc without helmet if it's a short trip. Mostly out of laziness but also that I'm a Nancy that doesn't like helmet hair at work.

If I'm going for an actual ride where I know there is going to be some spirited riding and roads that I'm not familiar with, I always wear helmet and jacket.

Yes I'm aware of the risk. You can spend all day going on about the risks and the stupidity in your opinion but it really comes down to, "you can bring a horse to water but you can't make it drink."

Spare your lectures about blah blah blah and mind your own business. lol u mad bro?

  8. The Thais are desperately hoping this story gets out of the headlines so that they can find a rug and a broom to sweep it away.

When I read this, can't help thinking about all the other cases like this one whereby police and/or "influential" persons have murdered others, and done exactly like you said, find scapegoats ,obfuscate, waste time, wait for it all to go away- and it will. KJ in CM, Blue Diamond, the Brit couple in Kanchanaburi (although the murdering policeman was arrested in this rare case).Red Bull, LDP in Pai, the list goes on and on and on. Similarities with the KJ investigation are uncanny with the blatant attempt to falsify the DNA evidence(which apparently has become standard operating procedure after the KJ investigation was successfully FUBAR'ed)

The sad reality is that this case will go exactly the same way. 20 yrs down the road, identity of real killers will be publicly known and easy to find with a google search, but case will be closed or uninvestigated. Only chance of justice here for the KT serial murders will be vigilante justice, might not be such a long wait.

The Koh Tao police were not expecting anyone to ask any questions this time or for social media to hold them accountable to actually do their jobs properly. I gues they expected the case to be another one of these http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/thailand-beach-death-parents-convinced-4410135

Nick was killed in the same place, after visiting the same bar and in the exact same way as David was, i.e. head wound and drowned. All of this less than 9 months before it happened to David. That's a hell of a coincidence to believe.

If it is true that the killers are still free there then it could stand to reason that they are serial killers.

  9. I had the same experience a couple of days ago in ubon ratchathani, I don't know if it's the same all over issan but in ubon 8th October they celebrate loy kratong, lots of police, government officials and immigration were there, all asking if they could have their photo taken with me, I actually got a bit paranoid at one point wondering if they just wanted my photo for official purposes.

I was actually told by the immigration chief that when a farang is here on a multiple entry visa he has to be registered at the nearest Immigration office with an address where he's staying which I confessed that I didn't know, he said that my gf's mom and dad could receive a 5000b fine for not registering me

  10. I saw something on thaivisa.com about a 5 year tourist visa that will be available soon, you only have to do a border run every year, might be worth looking into.

There is another option but I can't remember the name of the visa so don't quote me on the facts (someone else will give you exact details), you get a 5 year visa and costs about 500,000 baht.

  11. I do a similar sort of thing to you, 6 months in uk and 6 months in thai, I think we're all a little bit on tender hooks just in case we get refused re-entry, from what I've read I personally think the only people being targeted are the ones that are in Thailand for a long time on a reoccurring 30 day visa instead of a more appropriate visa to their situation, hope this help, if I hear anything i'll post it

  12. Hi

I've recently came back from Thailand after spending 6 months there. I spent about 4 months in Ubon Ratchathani city, I really enjoyed it there, its cheap and the people are completely different to the south, by this I mean the people are extremely genuine, its not a tourist hot spot so money is not the main factor to their lives( ie you tend not to get ripped off)

Theres a big park in the city which has an outside gym which is free for all to use 24hours a day plus at night time the park comes alive with many diiferent activities, football, basketball, skateboarding, ballroom dancing, people running, theres also a couple of other gyms that you have to pay for. A couple of farang bars are in ubon although I used to use the thai bars at the weekends when I would go out but it was nice to talk with some farang occasionally.

I know alot of the hotels/apartments/rooms for rent if you need any help and the general info about the city/province etc.

You can contact me if you need any help or info.

    All the best

    mick
