  1. Some time ago I installed a file server for a small office a Belta P4 2.4 Ghz with 256 MB Ram two hard drives with software raid 1 and an external USB hard drive as backup drive.

WinXP was pre-installed and with an APC UPS and all is functioning ok.

The business is growing so the number of client computers is now close to 10 and winXP doesn’t support more than 10 simultaneously connections.

Windows small business server is an option but quite expensive with the additional client Cal’s but Linux is perhaps a better choice as Linux can serve as a file server, domain controller and APC has a Linux version for the UPS shutdown program.

    It’s about 10 years ago that I used Linux so I have a few questions here;

Is the transfer of the company’s files with long filenames possible?

If the domain controller is unreachable can the users still logon with the own user profiles on their win XP/2000 pc’s?

Which version or distribution should I use?

  2. Hi All

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-K64 Laptop which is around 3years old. The screen has gone ( its 15" ) and I live in Chiang Mai. Sony repair shop here want 15k for a new screen which is crazy.

I have been told I should be able to buy a 2nd hand screen ( maybe not sony ) for around 3-4k in Bangkok.

Does anyone know where I could find 2nd hand screens for laptops in Bangkok.

Any info or alternative ideas appreciated.

    Regards

    Troy

If the LCD screen doesnt show any light its probably the backlight TL tube defect.

I could replace the backlight with low costs but am living in Phuket.

    Regards,

    Jack

  3. I just got an e-mail purporting to come from the Halifax BS, asking me to log into my account to clear some security problem. The address given to click on was:

    http://www.luktungthai.com/chat/appdata/s/.../formslogin.php

In the same directory, there was also:

    http://www.luktungthai.com/chat/appdata/s/online/[secure.halifax.co.uk]

I've reported it to the Halifax (or their agents?) as instructed at http://www.halifax.co.uk/SecurityandPrivac...shingemail.asp# . What else, if anything, should I do? I am not in Thailand.

    Richard.

I deleted the formslogin.php five minutes ago by using the control panel on the lukthungthai website.

See what happens next, have mailed the webmaster.

  4. i bought a sony playstation 2 about three months ago and both of the controllers are dead now. any reason why this might be?

I think you got copy controllers, hard to see the difference but if there is a sticker with a red A, B or H near the cable than be sure that you have the copy one.

They break down after a few weeks usually.

The originals are sold separately for 700- 800 baht and the copy ones do 150 -200 baht.

Even Tesco Lotus sells slimlines with copy controllers.

I once bought cheap controller for resell from China (years ago) and got Original ones. Everything looked 100 % original, also the package and inside. I took them appart and compared with an original one.

Just at that price they couldn't be original.....

Received from China a shipment Sony 8 mb memory cards for the ps2 in the yellow packages, got some complaints and removed the case and found copy pcb's.

Uploaded a picture, left is the original.

I am a qualified technician with years experience repairing playstations and other game consoles and I offer this free service to test the fixes and built up some experience with this console.

PM me if you want more info.

  7. they certainly don't like the heat - so the extra cooling module is a must.

Also try the "heat gun" trick - it's been know to fix the few that had solder defects (lead free solder on some of the chips failing..)

    YMMV

No don't do the heatgun trick, with luck it will only work for a few days and can do a lot of damage, preventing the warping of the mainboard and cooling mods is at the moment the way to go, look at http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showforum=133 for some solutions.

I sell modded consoles but I do not sell the Xbox360 because of the overheating problems, I wait for the new models or a very good fix for the overheating problems.

  8. English.

Thanks for reply. Just 1 other question. If i bring a ps2 to thailand, do you know if they work on any television. Or at least would you know if they work on the majority of them?

The question is, where your PS2 does come from. If it does come from Europe, you will have problems with the colour, because as far as I know, the TVs outside Europe don't support PAL. It is some kind of Enconding you can say for the colour. The rest of the wolrd does have NTSC as far as I know. So, with a PS2 from Europe you will have problems with the colour, if you do connect it with a TV from here. But if you do have a rather new TV over here, there shouldn't be any problems. But I am not 100% sure about that. :o

Thailand uses PAL so no problem at all and almost all TV's sold here are multinorm anyway.

  9. My PS2 plays DVDs only after holding down the button, but it's incredibly simple to use the D-Pad as a remote!

Is there any way to use the USB port on the PS2 to connect to a PC and transfer game save data to the PC, to free up the 8MB memory cards?

I can't play PS one game copies - any idea why?

For booting DVD or PS One games you press the reset button till the cloud comes, well that is way of some of the cheaper modchips that I know.

I install modchips for the the ps2 wich autoboots DVD's, PSone's and ofcourse PS2 'backups'.

Installing original modchip like the matrix infinity (35$) but also the matrix clones modbo 2.1 - modbo 760 (10$) work fine.

With this type modchip the ps2 can boot from the memory card with applications like HDloader or a FTP server.

And by connecting the ps2 on the home network I use FlashFXP on my pc to copy from and to the memorycard.

For transfering saved games by the USB port you need a USB-to-USB (PL-2301) cable and software nPort and Naplink.

  10. I read an interesting report saying the fault is the PCB distorting due to heat. I think I will try to fix it again as I may not have used enough heat sink compound when I put it all back together. The problem I am having now isnt the ring of lights anymore its the games crash after 10mins. If it doesnt work after that the only reballing I'll be doing will be with a sledge hammer

Been reading for hours on the forums over this Xbox360 problem because I have to repair (no) try to repair a xbox360 with this problem.

    Summary, problem caused by;

    1: low quality motherboard

2: motherboard and heatsink are incorrect mounted

3: motherboard warps and some CPU and/or GPU balls get disconnected

The heatgun solution does not work, the heat necessary for making a real solder reflow will destroy the CPU.

One guy reports after heating he stands on the cpu for a while and that seems to work for some weeks now.

Artic silver and some rework on the heatsinks to put more pressure on the cpu and prevent the motherboard from warping and extra cooling fans can help maybe.

The advice is on the forums immediately after buying a new xbox360 to put extra cooling in the box.

I thinking of buying a new xbox360 for spare parts in Bangkok but I wonder what do you get if you buy a Xbox360 which is already convenient modded so the warranty sticker is broken ........

Dodgy shops in Saphan Lek had a bad reputation selling new PS2's with old parts.

  11. Yah the red ring of death! That pretty much summs it up! Mine died only after 1 year, I tried to revive it using the heatgun method but it only fixed it for a few hrs now it just freezes up after I load a game. I really hope they have fixed this problem with the later issued models. I picked mine up in the states so maybe its only the ones made over there?? If the bare bones system is only 1000 baht cheaper then I think I'll pick another one up in the states and sneak it through at Sawanapoom.

    Cheers

The leadfree solder wich is used for the BGA (ball grid array) GPU is more sensitive for heat stress than the old type solder with lead what never had this problems.

Not only the xbox360 but also the Apple Ibook videochip have this problem.

But it take balls to try this with a heatgun, but it take even more balls to reball see:

    http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...579364&st=0

But you have to wait a bit longer for the new xbox360 models or mount a good cooler inside after your 90 day USA warranty period ofcourse :o

  12. Sorry to veer off topic , Home Pro also has a deal on at the moment for Samsung 42" LCD TV's going for THB 49,000. Payment terms are free for 3 months and interest free payments over 10 months.

Only analogue inputs (no DVI or HDMI) according to this review.

    http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/home_av/tvs/0...9268761p,00.htm

Is not a plasma TV but LCD and it has a HDMI input see:

    http://www.samsung.com/sg/products/tv/lcdt...=Specifications

  13. I think those Samsungs are plasma, and very low res at that.

No low res, the Samsung LA-32S71B is a HDTV LCD TV with a resultion of 1366 x 768 and it looks super connected on a HDTV source.

The dynamic contrast is 3000:1, the LA-XXR71 series has a 5000:1 dynamic contrast but costs a lot more.

  14. I was in the TV business a year ago and I can tell you the factory prices from major Chinese manufactures were in the range of $650-$720 USD for 32"s 8 months ago. This is factory price so expect at least 80% markup or more in retail stores, TVs have 20% import tax or 10% if CDK plus margins for importer and retailer. Price wise, this is an extremely good deal. Haier is one of the biggest TV makers in China and they have been in business for a long time. Besides, all LCD TV panels are made in 3 countries; they are Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. Besides, you would think a TV that is made in China would be inferior compare to brands from Japan, Korea, US... But, most big TV makers have assembly plants in China and many Chinese TV makers actually make OEM TVs for other big foreign brands. If you like the picture and sound quality of this particular TV model then go for it.

The only problem is that the promotion ended on Sunday and our Lotus store was sold out by then. So if anyone can tell me somewhere offering similar deals I'd be very happy!

Could not find a Haier LCD at Tesco Phuket but found a Philips 32" and a Samsung LA-32S71B for 29990 baht.

Both of them feeded with a low quality signal as usual seen in discount shops with ignorant staff and a guy there promoted the Philips LCD TV because it had more pixels (>1.5 mil) than the Samsung (1 mil).

Both of them have a resolution of 1366 x768 and that is 1 mil. pixels but the Samsung had a better picture.

At Phuket Central superstore shop on the second floor the same Samsung model for 39990 baht but now connected to a HDTV source and when I asked about the price difference the price was changed to 29990 baht. :o

  15. Does anyone have any recommendations for a 2 or 4GB USB memory stick/thumb drive? I understand that some of them can be password protected so that would be a plus. I am based in Bangkok so anything in Pantip is convenient.

Bought yesterday a Kingston DataTraveller USB stick with 2 GB for 1150 bahts (Supercheap Phuket).

Have 5 year waranty and its fast enough but no extra features like a write protect switch or built in encryption.

Now to figure out how to boot WinXP (BartPE) on this USB stick.

  16. Last year I had a prostate infection (prostatite)

First went to BKK Pattaya Hospital in Pattaya.See the young urologist there. He gave me antibiotics that relieved pain too .I wanted a second diagnostic. So went to Bumrumgrad.I think I saw the head of urology dept

The guy wanted I stopped for one week my antibiotics and then make tests. He didn't have a clue of the fact it will let me in big pain. When I explained him I already had the same illness in the past and tests were done with antibiotic;he became angry. He told me I had to come back the day after .He had no time to arrange to make the tests on this day. When I answered I will do the tests in Pattaya and I will come back.He really became angry. This sucker was only interrested on his tests's fees.Sure he new his job.But I cannot accept he thinks he is a little god and patients have to agree with any of his orders

I went back to the young urologist in Pattaya with whom I discussed the tests process and the treatment. This guy was educated in US.So he can deal with european customers (I don't speak about patients;here it is only business practices before medical ones;you know you have to struggle to have a good service)

Three weeks ago I had a prostate infection with very high fever , went to the International Hospital Phuket and was given an injection with antibiotics and ofcourse a bag full pills and had to pay 3200 baht.

It did help but it's not over, now I wonder where is a good urologist to find here?.

I think I need some surgery to get the flow back again. Bangkok Phuket Hospital its first priority is making money and I had problems there with blownup bill of 45000 baht for a three day treatment for simple foodpoisening.

    Found a usefull link with info about prostatitis;

  17. Glad to hear you won. Did they ask for the marriage certificate? As far as I know, we have not had cases this was asked for.

    www.sunbeltasiagroup.com

The officer at the last desk asked for it, she signed the extension consideration stamps.

She wanted to have proof (I think) that I was indeed living with my child/family.

She wanted also to have proof that my child did have the Thai nationality, and the translated birthcertificate was not enough.

Showed our housebook with my child name in it and this was accepted as proof.

  18. I aplied for the one year extension at the Suan Pluh Immigration office. As reason for stay I filled in to stay with my child who has Thai nationality. Than from the desk officer to the highest officer in charge, I think four officers were studing the documents.

I has also the copy of the police order and pointed the rule and after some scary minutes with a lot of discussion I heard in Thai that it was acknowledged that being a father over the 50y could aply for extension for stay.

Than it took more time for the translated birthcertificate but this was an offical and legalised document so this was also accepted.

Had to show the housebook with my child's name and also the mariage certificate.

Than I got the 30 day consideration stamp.

So I have to wait for the final descision but it looks ok.

  19. Well thanks for the advices, but nobody here have confirmed that this rule was correct translated from the police order ( getting extension for one year without proof of funds, be 50+ and having a child with Thai Nationality).

    Here under some posts that made me try to apply;

    QUOTE(maestro @ 2006-11-20 02:29:12)

In your case, age is the crucial factor. If you are 50 or older, you can apply for an annual extension of stay. No proof of income or money in the bank required.

If you are younger than 50, you cannot get an extension based on being the father of a Thai child, not even with proof of income or money in the bank. Your alternatives are

    QUOTE(Sunbelt Asia 2006-11-20 18:43:24)

    Maestro's answer is spot on.

You must be over 50 years old to get a one year extension of the NON - O based on living with your Thai child. Otherwise the only extension you can get inside Thailand at Immigration is of 60 days to visit your child.

Can confirmed it was correctly translated. The Government in fact translated it as well. Maestro posted a link before here to both Sunbelts and the governments translation.

We have had cases where the father over 50 years old was able to get the extension of a year.

However if the father are under 50 years old, even if you have custody, the only extension you can get inside Thailand is for 60 days. ( Of course if you have gransfather in) as you had the extension before Oct 1st, 2006, different story.

Please note: The cases that have been approved have been with our star visa lawyer. Too early in the game, to know if BKk interprets this law automatically or the head of our visa dept is educating.

    www.sunbeltasiagroup.com

Thanks Sunbelt, it does look that I need a very good lawyer because Immigration Phuket is totaly focussed on having money.

It is not the first time for me that an extension was denied here without legal reasons.

  20. Basically I brought my American Xbox 360 with me, and in the excitement managed to plug it in without thinking about the ramifications of doing so. BTW, burnt electronics wafting in the air is not the way to start your stay!

So I went to MBK to look for a new power supply, but managed to get a chorus of the same answer, "Mai mee krhap". However, I've researched the information online and found a company that is starting to produce the product in question. They don't want to sell 1 piece naturally, so that's not an option.

Has anyone heard of, or they themselves, done the same thing? If so, what remedy do I have?

You can order a replacement power suply (110 V) for the Xbox360 with Divineo China.

    http://www.divineo.cn/

Price is $46,95 exclusive transport and bank costs.

  21. Stopped to pay the internet bill three months ago (CAT Hinet Phuket) last month they disconnected me and all what they do is send me the montly invoices.

Nobody there gives a shit if I complain. faxed my logs full with disconnections the whole day , speed drops to 96 Kbs in daytime (should be 2000 kbs).

They blame TT&T, and if you call 1103, the call center is often unreachable, try to speak an technician who hangs up on me but I stay always very polite.

Ok am back with dialup again.
