  1. Well thanks for the advices, but nobody here have confirmed that this rule was correct translated from the police order ( getting extension for one year without proof of funds, be 50+ and having a child with Thai Nationality).

    Here under some posts that made me try to apply;

    QUOTE(maestro @ 2006-11-20 02:29:12)

In your case, age is the crucial factor. If you are 50 or older, you can apply for an annual extension of stay. No proof of income or money in the bank required.

If you are younger than 50, you cannot get an extension based on being the father of a Thai child, not even with proof of income or money in the bank. Your alternatives are

    Maestro's answer is spot on.

You must be over 50 years old to get a one year extension of the NON - O based on living with your Thai child. Otherwise the only extension you can get inside Thailand at Immigration is of 60 days to visit your child.

  2. Today I applied for a one year extension at The Immigration Office Phuket. I am 53 and have a child with a Thai nationality.

Had a multiple non O and in December I have to leave or get an extension of stay.

Have read some forum messages that when you are 50+ and have a child with a Thai Nationality that you dont have to show funds in the bank or having a 40K/month income.

The Immigration officer told me that I do have to show funds on a bankaccount or a proof of income.

So the one year extension was refused.

But he seemed to have a hard time with it, he was reading the new rules again and again.

So what can I do, try to aply again in Bangkok or are the rules correct understood by the immigration officer and if they are that means a flight to KL.

  3. Built our 2 story house five years ago.

Under the roof tiles heat reflective foil.

Over the gypsum ceiling in the bedrooms 10 cm iso blanket.

Walls built from isoblocks with airchamber 15 cm.

Many trees around the house and that is the most effective of all.

Result: we have airconditioners but seldom use it, only in the bedroom sometimes when the windows are closed to reduce the sound of the nightlife (meaning the more natural one).

  4. Slightly off the original subject, can we play PS2 on-line from Thailand with fake games using a chipped PS2? Or how about an original game using a chipped PS2? I have a network adaptor and successfully connected my PS2 to my ISP ( True ADSL). However, I still can't play any games on-line. This is because either my PS2 is chipped and somehow this is detected, or my ADLS router (D-Link) has a problem connecting PS2 on-line (I know the D-Link firmware has had problems in the past with PS2 on-line). Any help would be much appreciated.

I cannot tell about patched backup games, honor the forum rules, mail me if you want info.

You can play online with a disabled modchip with an original game disk

There are 4 regions for the PS2 and online gaming is possible with a ps2 with the same region as the original game disc.

The lag or latency shall make playing hard because Thailand has a CAT bottleneck, I dont know if there are local game servers.

There should be a setup disk with your networkadapter for configuring the networksettings.

Perhaps enable DHCP on your router will work.

  5. by december there may be far more houses available in that price range than ever before

Yes could not even believe it last year when all rental houses in Nai Harn area in that price range were already taken, and seeing every day the many constructions in progress here.

  6. Anyone know of any houses for rent in Rawai or Nai Harn? Looking for something with a garden, preferably fenced, but not necessary. Furniture would be nice. 2 bedrooms, decent kitchen. I've looked at some between 10000-13000 so I hope to stay within that price range. I plan to rent long term, and I'm the type of person that can pretty much guarantee the house will only look better after I leave.

anyone has any ideas let me know

    Cheers

    [email protected]

When do you want to start renting?, now there are plenty houses for rent but last year in december it was not easy for my friends to find something.

Very close to my house here on the hill in Nai Harn there are some very nice houses for rent with a great view.

  7. The trick used by a lot of shops in Saphan Lek is to sell the slimline ps2 with a replaced copy controller and powersuply and they can put an refurbished laser in it.

So they sell the seperated original parts for a higher price and be very competive for those who hunt for the lowest prices.

You can spot those shops with the lowest prices :o .

    I got a quote :

original slimline powersupply : 800 baht

Copy slimline powersupply : 400 baht (gets very hot)

    Original ps2 controller 650 baht

Copy controller 250 baht (usable for one/ two weeks of heavy playing)

PS2 copy memorycards , have the pictures from the pcb attached the left one is original.

The modchips are 200 baht types, the soldering done in Sapanlek is excellent but the wires are to long and the routing could better to avoid interference.

Best way is maybe to buy an unmodded ps2 with intact warranty sticker and watch when they do the modding.

    Have fun.

  8. There is a chance when you put the cooling block back on the CPU after adding a cooling paste that the cooling block tilts when you push the cooling block holders back on their place.

If the cooling block rises on one side of the CPU it will generate airbubbles in the paste and cooling paste with airbubbles has much higher heat resistance.

Finger prints on the surface of chips can also generate hotspots.

  9. My Sony Playstation 2 from America is starting to act up a little, getting a "disc cannot be read" error. Does anyone have some info on shops in Pantip or MBK that can repair it and add the chip at the same time?

One shop in Bangkok Saphanlek supplies me with ps2 parts for my ps2 shop in Phuket.

This shop sells original Sony parts while many other shops sell Chinese copy junk.

Mail me if you want the info about this shop.

New original lasers for the old thick ps2 are hard to find, the refurbished ones (3000 baht) can have a used laserdiode and/or are poorly aligned if the laserlens is replaced.

For the thin slimline type ps2 is there no problem replacing the laser and it should not cost to much but if you have an SCPH-70004 (V12) than you need a special IC to prevent laser burnout.

From the modchips is in Thailand the M type like the M5 or M7 very popular and it cost 5 dollar.

Works fine but I install the modbo 2.1 or newer 745 wich has a dev mode and that means that it is possible to boot HD loader on the memory card so you dont need a laser this way and play from harddisk with a hd-network adapter (1250 baht) this with a note that 70% of all games work on the HD.

Most of the laser read errors are caused by:

    1 Dirty laserlens

2 Blown laser coils (that moves the lens for focussing an tracking)

3 Worn out laserarm and other mechanical stuff

    4 Laser power

  10. A little over two years ago I decided I wanted a good reliable machine to bring to Thailand. This is what I had built;

    Intel 3.0 GHZ/256/800 CPU

    ASUS P4P800E Deluxe Motherboard

Seagate ST380013AS Serial STS/720 Hard Disk Drive

1 Gb PC2700 DDR Memory (Nanya)

    ATI 9600SE 128M DDR V/D/VO Video Card

    Mitsumi FX5411W 54X CDR

    Mitsumi 1.44 FDD

    Antec CA-3700BQE 350 Mid-Tower Case

    Foxconn 3.2GCPU Fan

It lasted a year and worked very well. During the second year it has been a headache. The CPU crapped out and I couldn't find the same replacement. I ended up with 2.66 Celeron because that's all I could find locally to fit the board. The video card also went bad. The worst part of the whole thing is that I gave my old HP Vectra to a friend of mine and it is still running well. To tell the truth, I can't see much difference between the original CPU and the cheap Celeron. For the average user and for someone who uses the computer mainly for the Internet I think a cheaper off the shelf box is fine. A lot of RAM, high speed USB 2 ports and a SATA hard drive would be my minimum requirements. The troubleshooting was the worst thing. The computer would reboot itself about every other day and finally got to the point that it would only run for a half hour or so.

Did you ever removed the dust from the CPU cooler fan and block, videocard etc?.

The processor was maybe not cool enough by dirt on the fan/coolblock or the connection between coolblock and CPU was not perfect.

My FX5700 videocard started to malfunction and I had to remove the gpu cooler for cleaning the pcb.

A stupid design because the cooler fan blows the dust particles under the cooler so cleaning without removing the cooler is not possible.

An inspection with a loop showed a lot of corrosion on the parts around the GPU.

After cleaning with isopropyl alcohol the videocard works fine again.

I have the same MB P4P800E and a 3 GHZ P4 and it works after 2 years intens use fine.

  11. I have a Cooler Master case with a good quality power supply and its worth the extra money.

The PC with a 3 Ghz P4 makes less noise than the old 1200 baht cases wich are rusting within a year and with power supplies wich also fail, cheap chinese crap.

The Coolermaster case has a dust filter and dust wich attracts water causes alot of defects in electronics.

Here where I live close to the sea is regular cleaning of all electronics special those equiped with ventilators a must or corrosion will cause shortcuts and defects.

  12. I got buddy internet and it works nice.

I got a buddy ADSL modem (Fujian Star-net Communication Co.,ltd).

It works nicely without any problems and I have good Torrent speed.

It plugs in USB port (and I have only 2 on my laptop).

I have an older D-Link, DSL-500 G Router here which would have Ethernet connection.

The router tends I think to get problems if it must handle to many requests (I got told).

As testing on bittorrent (only legal things of course), would be very difficult as I anyway get sometimes good sometimes bad speed, I would not know on hot it is related to the modem/router.

    Has anyone knowlege on that?

    Thanks

    Michael

I have DSL-500 G router and had problems with to many connections when using software like shareza etc.

The modem had to be reset for to work again.

  13. I am hoping that someone, somewhere out there can help us. The transformer adjacent to our new home is buzzing constantly and LOUDLY. We have called EGAT, but they claim that the salt air from the sea is causing this buzzing and that in high season it will go away. Well, we are here year-round. Also, I have heard transformers that are inland which also make this terribly annoying noise and are miles from the sea. There is a new transformer not too far from us that is purring away silently.....you wouldn't even know it was there. I know that if the president of EGAT lived near this thing then the buzzing would be fixed.

It has gotten to the point now that we have constant headaches. In fact, I have resorted to wearing ear plugs around the house.

Is there an electrical engineer out there who could tell us whether or not we need to move?

We have considered hiring a lawyer in order to get some action. This is noise pollution of the insidious kind.

Had such a transformar which was noisy not so far from my backyard but it did take a couple years for an replacement showed up and the noise was away.

About complaining we waited six months for to get an electricity meter, and they told me there was a shortage of meters (Bangkok make mistake) what was BS they wanted extra pocket money 10000 baht.

I did not pay that ofcourse and my neigbour provided power and after a few months waiting I asked my pretty doughter to go to the EGAT office and she told the office workers that we had a big problem now and started to cry a little as instructed.

Three days later we got power.

  14. OK so i needed to book a flight for the next day , first spoke to air asia staff one -way 2895 Baht! (had to look to see if Thai Air had replaced them at that price!)

Ok so over to 1 2 go s flat rate 1800 baht one way, flights availiable cost ok , so lets book them....

now i understand not to expect quick efficient service all the time , however

Total time from asking for the tickets to actually paying for them and leaving the counter...........

90 MINUTES :o christ it only takes that long to fly there!

This a record ? or anybody else got an even worse tale to tell?

There was a little que standing for that 1 2 .... WAIT counter in Lotus and I had no other choice than to wait for over three hours for receiving the ticket, whole afternoon wasted :D .

  15. I have been toying with the idea of buying a 360 for a while now. The copy games are now available at 400 Baht. Should I give in and buy one? One thing that I am not sure of is if the old Xbox games will play on the 360? It seems that only some Xbox games will playon it. The machine is priced at 18500 Bath for the chipped unit with a wireless controller and headphones. What are your experiences with the 360?

Were can you get the copy games? I love my 360 but the games are expensive. A great way to kill some time. My machine isnt chipped, can I buy the chipps too? what does the chip do??

    Thanks

You can only backup games on a dual layer DVD-R, game region must be the same as the xbox 360 region. No need for a modchip if you do the DVD player firmware flashing by yourself, plenty tutorials on the net.

Firmware flashing is possible for Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L and for the Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 Xbox 360 DVD drive but not possible if you have a Philips DVD drive.

A modchip for the Xbox 360 is the NME 360 $42 wich patches the firmware of the DVD drive so you don't need to change the original firmware in the DVD player and is available for the LG drive or the Toshiba-Samsung drive.

Another is the Globe 360 53$ and is usable for both drives.

Already patched DVD drives are also available for around 70$.

If M$ can detect patched firmware in the future, the modchips have a sleepmode so playing Xbox Live is possible without being blacklisted.

Another thing, yesterday I connected for the first time Xbox live with my 'old" xbox and found out that creating an account in Thailand was not possible, it was not suported in this region.

  16. Is there any kind of consumer protection agency in Thailand, or do we just pay our money and get ripped off?

My problem is that I bought a JVC machine (admittedly in Dubai) that records videos to DVDs, and it has repeatedly broken down (no signal between video and DVD, usually). The JVC people in Bangkok obviously didn't have a clue about how to repair it and, the first time they had it, even made it worse. I eventually took it to their chief engineer at his office, rather than their service centre, and when I went to collect it he had fixed one problem but introduced another. The CHIEF ENGINEER, having failed, gave up and sent it back to the service centre to play with.

It always works for a while after I get it back, but then it breaks down again. Of course, the service centre think it's funny when I come back with it - "Oh, you again, ho ho ho," which pisses me off even more. I can't see the joke I guess. :o

It's now six months over its warranty period so now I'm having to pay for their incompetence. What should have happened if they can't fix it properly is that I should have received a replacement machine, but I guess in LOS that would never happen in a million years.

Is there anything I can do? What I feel like doing is heaving it through their window. Or maybe someone knows of a service engineer who actually knows what he is doing.

Well I am qualified years ago for doing that kind of repairs and do repairs for the expats here (Phuket) who have similair problems.

Is it a combination like the JVC DR-MX1S Hard Drive/DVD/VHS Recorder Deck?.

Common problem for VCR's is the tape loop, tape gets shortly stuck in the mechanisme and the loop picks up sometimes grease from the mechanisme and than it greases the videohead and other parts and finaly becomes stuck.

  17. I'm just wondering how many people around Thailand have the same problem I have with missing mail.

I've lived in various locations on Phuket over the years, and in each, letters posted both in Thailand and from europe fail to arrive. :o

I've long since given up asking at the the local post office as the reply is always the same - it's missing in Bangkok or europe, not here.... blah blah blah!

Anyone have any theories as to where all this missing mail goes ? :D

Live in Nai Harn Phuket since 2000 , had in the first years most of the mail missing, ATM and credit cards from Holland were always intercepted and had to brought to me by visiting family.

After a change from mail delevering from Karon to Rawai postoffice there was no longer missing mail and no more frustation to :D .

There are honest and service minded people here working in Rawai postoffice.

  18. Yep it was my old harddisk.

    Just another question.

Can I have SATA and IDE HD combined in one pc with the IDE as master first?

What I want to do is first format the SATA while running from IDE drive then install Windows on SATA, and then change IDE to slave to function as back up drive and boot from SATA.

    Thanks for your advice,

    Alex

With modern mainboards in the bios setup you can choose wich device floppy,CD, and a choice for all detected HD drive's boots first.

For older mainboards without this feature above you can create a small primairy partion and install a bootmanager.

With a winXP install CD, boot from this CD and use the windows setup for partioning and format any drive.

  19. Hi All

Had some advice from a family member that told me to knock the hardrive a few times with a hammer and guess what.

    It worked!!!!

That is a usable trick for 'old' harddiscs, should not be needed for a new drive.

Had to much problems with Maxtor drives, I buy now Seagates with five years of warranty.

Buy all pc parts with a long warranty period that saves money in this climate.

  20. I can replace the internal powersupply for the PS1 and PS2( thick model), that prevents accidents with an adapter.

Send the playstation to me (Phuket) with EMS and get it returned in one week with a 220V power suply and modchip.

With this type modchip all versions PS2 play all versions of games and DVD movies (region free and autoboot) and the ps2 can be connected without problems on a PAL TV.

  21. Anyone know of a good PS2 accessories shop in Bangkok?

I need 2 extension cables for the gamepads as I don't want to have to sit near the TV. Spent a few hours at Pantip today but couldn't find anyone who stocked them.

There must be a shop that sells the full range of PS2 accessories somewhere in Bangkok right??

    TIA.

    GG

Saphan Lek near the Hifi markt (Ban Moo) is the place for PS2 consoles and accessories.

Front is a mall for electronic parts and in the back are many many small game shops.

Also famous for relabeling consoles and fake "original" parts.

But I know some shops wich sell the good stuff and that are not the one's with the lowest prices.

  22. I hope you have better luck than I am in getting my Acer repaired.

My g/f decided to 'tread' on mine (replace tread with STAMPED it's closer to the truth) Its been with Acer for 5 weeks now price has slowly crept up from 6000 to 18,000 (inc 800baht servise fee) Its still just about cost effective to get it repaired as a replacement is just over 70,000 baht.

The best bit is the screen wont be here till Some time in August. Not bad for their 2 hour warrenty repair........

Repairs can take months here in Thailand by official service agents or dealers of the major brands.

It helps if you know somebody inside, always try to contact the service department directly and butter up the man who is in charge and the last repair for a customer (digital camera) took almost three weeks but three days after my phone call the repaired item arrived here at Phuket with EMS.

Service for an Epson printer wich has a display that flashed it needed service and did not a thing anymore: the defect was caused by using COPY color ink cartridges, that was told to the customer.

Now the owner was afraid to loose his printer for weeks so he brought it to me and it turned out that the defect was caused by leakage from the ORIGINAL black EPSON ink cartridge.

All what I did was clean the unit inside and reset the service counter in the eeprom of the printer (thanks to the guy who works in the Epson factory for this tool).

For Acer laptop wich is the best sold laptop here and made in Thailand, I don't think that they have to order this part from outside Thailand, I think that is the usual bullshit to avoid to work to hard.
